BASHOUR Principal 'NJ PRINCIPAUS MESSAGE Where are you going? We know where you have been! For the past twelve years you and the members of all the 1960 classes throughout the length and breadth of this country have participated in the great American dream of a public education for all. Although each local board of education has had its own innovations and ideas of progress, basically all of you have had a similar educational experience. It has been the common aim to afford everyone the basic skills of the 3 R's, to develop character, citizenship, a sense of moral values and, in general, to develop all those attributes which in the aggregate would represent an apperceptive mass from which each and every American student could build a good life for himself, and his family, and contribute to his country's welfare. At this point in your careers, the record changes. Each of you in your best judgment is now to make decisions which will shape the future course of your lives. Decisions concerning college, vocation, military, etc., even marriage. We hope and pray that we as educators have given you the necessary tools to make the proper decision for you. We hope that, in choosing your way, you keep your sights high, your goals definite and worthy. However, in your striving, keep in mind the words of Cicero, who said, If you aspire to the highest place, it is no disgrace to stop at the second or even the third. Do not live for the day alone-live and plan for a tomorrow and do not blemish your tomorrow by nearsighted, faint-hearted and morally poor decisions of today. Always keep uppermost in your mind that the good life is worth the striving, that the Creator endowed each of us with certain inalienable rights, but that with these rights go hand-in-hand the tremendous responsibility of taking our proper and peculiar place in His scheme of things, by contributing something to life and to our fellow man so that one can truly say the world is a better place for our having passed through. I hope that all of you take the high road through life. I hope that your lives will be happy and busy ones, that your actions will reflect the education you have received at Bulkeley and at worship, and that during all your days you will walk with your head high with a justifiable pride in your own accomplish- ments and in your contribution to your fellow man in a common striving for the better life. FOOTBALL The year 1959 was a highly successful one for the Bulkeley High Football team. Coaches Ed Korisky and Felix Karsky guided their charges to the second best record in school history. With thirteen lettermen dotting the picture, experts tabbed Bulkeley as a team to watch. The Third Annual Capitol City Jamboree served as the unveiling of the Seambusters and of their counterparts, the Stampeders. Through- out this exhibition the Bulldogs were content with just getting a good workout. Their play was lackadaisical, spotty, and nowhere near their ability. This could be traced partly to the ab- sence of Coach Karsky, who was in the hospital recovering from an appendectomy. Two weeks later in Norwich the season opened and the boys began to play for 'keeps. Behind the rugged Stampede line our rugged Tiger Backs clawed, fought, and drove their way to eat upi' valuable yardage. Meanwhile the Seam- busters resembled uuncaged lions as they beat the Wfildcats into oblivion. Individuals such as tenacious Mark Buonome, panther-like Paul Ucello, young Merrill Yavinsky, who was the author of a fine 60 yard T.D. scamper, and tough Tommy Sonnone, who personally ac- counted for 22 markers, made the long hike back home an enjoyable one. Only an injury to tackle John Pagnoni marred this auspicious 28-6 beginning. Game number two - or, should 1 say, con- quest number two - was East Hartford. Hardly was the crowd settled, when Bay Cuntulis was off to pay dirt. The hard hitting junior, behind picturesque blocking, galloped 61 yards on the third play of the encounter. A Balesano-to- Buonome pass was good for the extra points and the Bulldogs quickly led 8-0. Throughout the rest of the half, the Stampeders L'rumbled fre- quently, but were never able to break loose completely. Kicking off to start the second half, the Hornets quickly lost their sting as Bobby Ruff Roffalo celebrated his return to the line- up by taking the kickoff and prancing 86 yards with it for the score. As the Seambusters took over, the misery gentlemen rocked the E.H.H.S. single wing unmercifully. Consequently, the Hornets had to revert to plays that havenit been used since the turn of the century. Only a punt return in the waning thirty seconds saved the boys from over east from a complete loss of face as they went down to defeat 14-6. Outstand- ing afternoons were had by Pete Dengenis, a bone crushing blocker, Zig Pabich, a rugged linebacker, and, of course, Big Boy Bay Guntulis. 4'Turn the Tables, echoed Ed Korisky. Hit to Hurt, chanted Felix Karsky. 4'We gotta win, repeated the students. For this was the traditional slugfest with arch-rival Hartford High. The Bulldogs scored twice in the space of two minutes to ice the decision early. This rampage came early in the second period. Con- sistent barrages at the Owl line netted huge chunks of turf until finally Hay Guntulis blasted in for the six points. A jarring tackle by Paul Uccello on the ensuing kick-off caused a fumble which ever-elert co-captain Buonome plucked out of the air and returned to the H.P.H.S. four-yard line. But here the Bulldogs fumbled the ball away at the one, only to have Pete Dengenis block a Hartford punt, and once again ujohnny on the spot Buonome pounced on the ball, but this time his alertness was worth six points. Talk about exciting football! In the sec- ond half, two H.P.H.S. passes were good for scores, but overall the Maroon dominated play to win a much cherished 14-12 tilt. Bulkeley 40 - Wilbur Cross 16. What an ex- hibition! The power, speed, deception, and foot- ball know-how of the Koriskymen really showed in this one. Terrible Tom', Sonnone plowed across the line four times on runs of 13, 1, 11, and 66 yards in dazzling performance. The Big Seven mauled their counterparts into submis- sion. Punt Dengenis added two more notches to his belt. Buonome, Mueller, Manning, Gan- carz, Grieve, Audet, and ever so many more starred in this gross mis-match. Now showing a glittering 4-0 record, the Ma- roon made short work of the New London Wllalers. Once again the Mighty Mite back- field showed that they have no peers when it comes to toughness. Ray Guntulis, Tom Son- none, and Bob Raffalo, under the direction of Pete Balesano, blocked, drove, spun, twisted, turned, bit, in fact, did anything for that extra inch. Bruising fullback Cuntulis dented the scoring column for 22 points, while Sonnone had a sparkling 45-yard T.D. run in this 28-6 rout. Upfront 'gPunt Dengenis got another one,'while Zig Pabich wrecked the Shoreliners' offense with his ferocious line backing. We now stood first in the Capitol District Conference and were gaining stature as every game went by. Bulkeley was on the football map. ln Connecticut scholastic football circles, the most highly respected team, year in and year out, is New Haven Hillhouse. This big, rough, tough outfit was the Southenders' next chal- lenge. Featuring a speedy backfield and the state's best passer, the Academics were a for- midable opponent, indeed. But, they more than met their match in our Bulldogs. Led by that aggressive young giant Dick Grieve, rugged Mark Buonome, smart Merrill Yavinsky., mus- cular Ralph Worth, and fleet Mike Nyez, Bulk- eley punched out a 14-6 win in the rain at Dillin Co-Captains Buonome and Dengenis hold the line. Sonnone and Paul Uccello scored the markers, with Paul's coming on co-captain Den- genis' fifth blocked punt of the year. Hampered by the sloppy turf, the Stampeders were con- tent to bang out yardage on power plays off our huge tacklers Dick Grieve and Art Audet. De- fensively, once again the Seambusters were un- pregnable. The only drawback the boys suffered was the fact that the wet terrain made it impos- sible for our feared end runs to be used. '6Scalp the Beaverlv Number Seven! These were the warcries of the week. With the City Championship hanging in the balance, Bulkeley and Weaver squared off before 7,000 excited spectators. Weaver jumped oil' to an early 8-0 lead, due to a 61-yard interception of an errant Bulkeley pass. Late in period one, the South- enders' attack began to roll. The vaunted Stam- peders suddenly broke loose as, behind perfect blocking, especially by sturdy Al DeMeola, Tom Sonnone darted 59 yards to pay dirt. Minutes later, Tommy streaked across the line from twenty yards out to put us ahead 12-8. The Beavers generated a drive of their own late in the stanza to gain a 14-12 halftime advantage. Mark grabs a fumble. In the second half, inspired by a stirring pep talk given by the coaches during intermission, the boys rose to never-before-reached heights. Blocking, running, tackling, bustling as never before, the Bulldogs took complete control of the contest. Once again Sonnone rambled for a score, this time from 32 yards away, Bobby Raffalo also contributed a tally. Dick Grieve blocked a punt, Artie Audet cleaned the path for ballcarriers, and co-captain Sonnone per- sonally gained a fantastic 267 yards. Defensively, Buonome, Dengenis, Nyez, and Pabich con- tinually bombed the not-so-eager Beavers. The final 28-12 score gave Bulkeley the coveted City Championship. The Southend rocked all night, celebrating this happy event. Turkey Day 1959 promised to show an exciting game, as both B.H.S. and New Britain were un- Chop Chop defeated in conference play, with the champion- ship going to the winner of this clash. With only four days to ready themselves for this vital match, our boys were left lifeless and unpre- pared. Leaving their best game home, the hopes for a perfect season were drowned in a 26-0 rout. Capitalizing on fumbles and miscues, the Golden Hurricanes buried us under, using their fa- mous home run offense. Featuring Jackie Robinson, a truly fine back, New Britain was an inspired ball club, which refused to be denied. Two Bulkeley drives petered out inside the New Britain five-yard line. Richie Grieve, Pete Dengenis, Paul Uccello, Tommy Sonnone, Mark Buonome, Bob Raifalo, and Zig Pabich fought their hearts out to no avail. The coaches picked Zig Pabich as the recipient of the Babe Allen Trophy, which goes to the outstanding Bulkeley player in the game. Recapping the season, the second under the Double K regime, shows the tremendous ac- complishments achieved by our boys. Quick, tough ends Mark Buonome, Paul Uccello, Larry Mueller, and Dave Manning, giant tackles Art Audet and Rich Grieve, cat-like guards Pete Bi Ra storms over. S Y Terrible Tom blazes across. , i . ,grip H I The Board of Strategy. Dengenis and Zig Pabichg dependable center Ken Jacobs, and fast, powerful backs Tom Son- none, Bob Raifalo, Tom Nyez, Andy Sullivan, Pete Balesano and Frank Gancarz have played their last football for Bulkeley as they move on to bigger and better things. But their mark re- mains in the minds of their fans. Additional laurels were earned by Mark Buonome, Tom Sonnone, Ralph Worth, and Pete Dengenis, who were named to the All-Star C.D.C. Team. Pete Dengenis and Tom Sonnone were named respec- tively the best blocking lineman and backfield- man by the coaches. Pete Balesano was awarded the Scholastic Trophy for his classroom ac- complishments. The season thus had drawn to a close. It was a thrilling, highly successful one of which everyone can be justifiably proud. 99 Q S, Q? qs. 69. . .U y1'.-.5,,,,f'-- ' , A A ,,., 'Ji ' C Q un ,ll- A st, 4'-PM Q, f,si' far lst row, l. to r.: H. CROSS COUNTRY This year's cross country team looked forward to the oncoming season with determination and confidence. With nearly all last year's team re- turning, Coach Flash Atlin shared their hopes for the future. The team, led by seniors, Captain Mike 'Boyle and Bob Mason, and junior Al Pug- lisi, proved to be a well-balanced team. ,lim Leading the field. 'X Bracken, the freshman surprise, was also in- strumental in many of the victories as were sophomores, Paul McCollam and Harvey Mc- Phee. John Puglisi and Joe Sinicrope rounded out the team. In the initial meet of the season, an all-too- powerful Manchester High team defeated the Bulkeley barriers by the score of 16-44 despite a fine effort by Bob Mason and ,lim Bracken. In the same meet Bulkeley swept the first five places from Maloney in a 15-50 win. The cross country team was never in danger in defeating Conard, 20-35. Bob Mason led the way in setting a record of 13:00 minutes at the West Hartford course. Mike Boyle, Al Puglisi, ,lim Bracken, and Paul McCo1lam captured sec- ond, third, fourth, and fifth respectively, while Harvey McPhee came in tenth. In their next encounter, the Bulkeley team nipped East Hartford by the score of 27-28, even though East Hartford took the first two places. Finishing third, fourth, fifth, and sixth were Mike Boyle, Al Puglisi, Jim Bracken, and Paul McCollam, in that order. The barriers broke even in a meet with Nor- wich and New London in losing to Norwich 24-32 and beating New London 25-30. Norwich swept the first two places with Mike Boyle, the 4 ,,--n x 'Md Start of the Hartford-Weaver meet. first to finish for Bulkeley, coming in third, fol- lowed by Bob Mason eighth andjim Bracken tenth. The Bulkeley team nailed Windham by the score of 17-41. Mike Boyle paced the team by finishing in first place with ,lim Bracken second, Al Puglisi third, Bob Mason fourth, Larry Ca- marca seventh, and Harvey McPhee eighth. The New Britain High cross country team handed Bulkeley a loss in a 22-35 score. New Britain, one of the perennial strong cross coun- try teams in the state, proved to be too much for the Bulkeley runners. Outstanding in defeat were Bob Mason second, Jim Bracken fifth, Mike Boyle seventh, and Al Puglisi tenth. With Bill Baron of East Hartford setting a new course record, our Bulkeley harriers placed fourth out of a field of seven schools in the an- nual Greater Hartford cross country meet at Keney Park. Leaders for Bulkeley were Bob Mason seventh, Jim Bracken tenth, and Mike Boyle twelfth. SCHEDULE Bulkeley 44 L Manchester ,. ,, Bulkeley 15 W Maloney .. Bulkeley 20 W Conard . .... .....,, , ,. Once again the Bulkeley team lost a very close meet by the score of 40-37 to Middletown High. Bulkeley made a strong bid for victory witli Raffalo, Peatie, and the freestyle team of Keane, Langhans, Karwan and Raffalo capturing first places. Griffith, Shortell, Vissoe, Connelly, and Langhans added second places to what proved to be a losing cause. Bulkeley fell victim to Manchester Highis team, one of the most powerful in the state, by the score of 59-18. With only Shortell being able to take a first, it was evident that Manchester was too much for the Bulkeley team. Vissoe, Raffalo, and Peatie contributed second places for Bulkeley. In the next encounter, the Bulkeley swim- mers were able to turn the tide in posting a 39-38 win over Croft. Outstanding in this close meet were Raffalo and Peatie with a double win for the latter. Rugged re- bounder Mark Buonome was a question mark after his knee injury in the ill-fated Turkey Day grid game. Beyond their fine All-Tournament veteran pivot, Barry Leghorn, Bulkeley seemed to have little, save a collection of untried ex- jay-vees. With another vicious CDC slate ahead, this nucleus appeared to be far from enough. The Maroons tipped off the season at home against the Hurricanes from New Britain, With New Britain's taunting football sign State Champs, Almost! hanging over the railing, Bulkeley butchered the Canes, 72-50. Leghorn led the vengeful onslaught with 19 points, while big Jim Pillion showed, by some solid rebound- ing, that heid be a man to be reckoned with. Legs had his finest hour in the second game, against East Hartford, as only his own unselfish- ness prevented his wiping out Carmen Perrone's school record of 41 points. Barry, unstoppable inside, outside, and at the foul line, plunked in 41 to tie the mark as his team bombed the Hor- nets, 90-55. With the last quarter hardly begun, Leghom removed himself from the lineup and did not return. The Maroons went on to dunk 65 per cent of their shots from the field. Shades of the '58 Keyhole Kids! Paul Tilly Bieletti, Bulkeley's ace back- court man, sparked the Marooons to a 72-59 vic- tory over New London in their next encounter. Bieletti unveiled a deadly jump shot which pro- duced 25 points and held off the persistent snipes of the Whalers' Bob Simoni. Leghorn also rang up 25 in another top-drawer effort, and Bob Pecott's floor game was outstanding. Norwich handed Bulkeley its first setback on a last-second overtime basket in the Wildcats' den, as the Leghorn threat was completely smothered by the Norwich defense. But the Maroons bounced back against Wethersfield, paced by Bieletti's fine all-around game and Mark Buonome's sturdy job under the boards. In downing Ted Beal 81 Co. 68-55, Bulkeley chalked up its 22nd straight win in their gym, aptly termed by the Hartford Times as the tor- ture chambern 1to opposing teams, of course! I . Unbeaten Notre Dame then held off a late Maroon spurt to pin a 54-53 loss on the Bull- dogs, as Leghorn's 20 went down the drain. Again, though, Bulkeley snapped right back against the Weaver Beavers. The Maroons ap- plied the pressure to Ernie Perry and his mates from the outset and ran up a 14-point lead in the third quarter. When the Beavers began to counterattack, Leghorn tossed in several key baskets and climaxed a perfect 14-for-14 free- throw performance. As Weaver went down 51-47, Bieletti and Pillion aided Barry no little with fine defensive gems and floor games. A lackluster Sacred Heart club fell at Bulke- ley, 74-47. This was more or less a routine var- sity game, but some fans might remember this niglit's jayvee game, in which the Waterbury club ran up exactly one point in the first quar- ter. Remember Leavenworth? Next on the list was Hartford High, unde- feated and conqueror of state champ Wilbur Cross. Not at all awed by the Owls' imposing reputation, the Maroons displayed a fine team effort in staying even with Hartford for a half, 25-all. But an upset of the Owls was not in the cards. From the start of the second half Hart- ford took command as Ed Griffiin hit a hot spree and Bulkeley,s offense completely collapsed. Despite a fine showing by ,lack Kelly and a late spurt by Leghorn, Bulkeley went down 61-46. Now 6-3, the Maroons had reached a crossroad of campaign. The key game of their schedule was fought at Bulkeley on January 19, against Naugatuck and 6-11 Ed Big Dipper Slom- censki. The game was decided under the boards, where Mark Buonome continually boxed out his towering opponent and flagged down 21 re- bounds in his best performance of the year. Leghorn tossed in 28, but Bieletti was even bet- ter on offense with several brilliant feeds to Pillion under the basket and 24 of his own. The Bulldogs led all the way and won 68-57 despite one of the finest individual performances ever seen at Bulkeley. Naugy's Bill Rado popped in 22 foul shots, and 7 baskets for 36 points, but was weighed down by some wretched support. The Maroons then repeated over Weaver, 64-57. The Beaver zone hogtied Leghorn most of the way, but this only gave ,lohn Pazdar, then just an ace reserve, his long-awaited opportunity to step into the limelight. John was red-hot from the corner in tallying 20 points while Barry was held to 13. Since Weaver had swept a pair from Bulkeley the year before, it was indeed sweet revenge for the Bulldogs. Since he relieved Babe Allen in 1953, Coach Bazzano had never lost to New London in 13 jousts. This tradition was kept alive in the Wlialing City as Leghorn's 23 points led a late rally that got the Maroons under the wire, 52-48. Everybody's All-Slater, Barry Leghorn. -aFD? .'?' A Leghorn special. Hartford's now-slumping Owls filled this hill nicely. Leghorn's 17 was again the game's high hoth in the hoop and off the boards. Breaking out of early doldrums, the Maroon took a 25-21 lead at halftime and held on as Bruce Maddox and Ed Grifiin led Hartford hack. Bulkeley went into a premature freeze that proved costly, hut the Owls sorely missed ace inside Mann Stan Poole and just didn't have quite enough steam coming in to the wire. Gene Reilly's two clutch free throws clinched it, 51-47. This gave Bulkeley the City Title, but the Maroons weren,t stopping there. New Britain's Central Connecticut State Col- lege became the scene of Bulkeley's first CDC championship. The Maroon again prevailed, 65-57, over the Hurricanes. Boh Smilnak was hot and almost inspired the ,canes to an upset with 30 points, hut Leghorn fW'hat, againll balanced this well with 24 markers. Pazdar, Pecott, and Bieletti contrihuted much to a team effort that stifled a late 'Cane rally. Q Wing, . fxx. X M The Maroons next played at Wethersfield and inspired a new saying, Don't quit, even 'after you lose the ball game! Despite Leghom's 32 points, the Eagles had apparently presented their frenzied fans and head cheerleader with a 73-71 victory, their first ever over Bulkeley. But almost a week later, the Maroons suddenly found themselves the victor. Hapless Wethers- field had been sabotaged by an ineligible player, and handed Bulkeley a forfeit. A sizzling and inspired East Hartford quintet set the pace nearly all the way in the season finale at the Hornet's nest, but the Bulldogs stampeded down the homestretch and eked out a thrilling 65-63 win. Bob Pecott led the last- minute charge which saw Legh,om's two pres- sure foul shots decide the ballgame. Then it was off to New Haven. The CIAC had granted the Maroons fifth position in the drawing as reward for their 14-3 record. In theory, this meant that Bulkeley would start off against a low-rated club, but here the Maroons suffered a wretched break. Hartford High had gone into a mid-season slump which cost them a high ranking, but Joe Ku- bachka had got the Owls up', just in time for the tourney. And, in the luck of the draw, Hart- ford wound up against Bulkeley. The Owls won, 72-58. Rugged pivot Stan Poole stymied the Maroons in all phases of the game as his team never trailed for a moment. Hart- ford spurted to an early lead, then held on grim- ly when the Maroons unleashed another of their fabled back-to-the-wall rallies. Several times Bulkeley appeared finished only to scramble up again and struggle back to a tie score behind Pazdar, Kelly, Bieletti, or the redoubtable Leg- horn. But the determined Owls could always produce the clutch bombs when they had to, and the fighting Maroons had reached the end of the line. As the final buzzer sounded through the smoke-filled Arena and dejected Bulkeley fans straggled out, the high-school careers of no less than six of the Maroons had ended. '6Legs, of course, led the paradeg who can say enough about this terrific All-Stater? Tilly Bieletti, also, left Coach Bazzano with a huge gap to fill on the 1961 squad, as his superb playmaking and jump-shooting will be long remembered. Another Maroon completing his last game was steady John Pazdar, who suddenly caught fire in midseason just when his team needed him and played a big part in forging the City and CDC crowns. And Mark Buonome, who fought off his injury to perform solidly under the boards throughout the season - who can for- get the job he did on the Big Dipper? Jack Kelly and Mike Violette, too, as reserves con- tributed their bit to Bulkeley's successful sea- son, with Jack especially deadly in that wild second game against Hartford. The Class of 1960, indeed had a first-rate basketball team in itself. And, while the 1960 edition of the Ma- roons may have lacked the great tournament instinct of the Keyhole.Kids, it did prove its mettle and ability with its CDC and City titles. None of its predecessors, through Bulkeley's en- tire history, could make that statement. So, in summing up, The Bulkeley Maroons of 1960 had nothing to be ashamed of and much of which Bulkeley can well be proud. DeLoreto, M. Liappes, R. Raffalo, D. Langhans, J. Cunning. Second row, l.-r.: J. Duggan, J. Hourihan, G. Kilray, D. Dorman. Third row, l.-r.: Coach Bazzano, A. Audet, B. Aguirre, Coach Allen. BASEBALL The 1960 Maroons faced their season with four returning lettermen. In their hopes of a successful year, it became evident that these four seniors would form the nucleus of the ballclub. So it was that sturdy firstbaseman Mark Buonome, fleet-footed outfielder Mike Liappes, and steady catcher Denis Langhans helped set the pace for a solid team. And rounding out his high-school career was another of those gifted all-around athletes, pitcher Bob Raifalo. In their first five contests the Bulldogs emerged with three victories, each won with this smallish, fireballing righthander in the pitcher's box. Lang- hans was the batting star with three hits as the Maroons downed Norwich, 8 to 4, to open the sea- son. Coach Babe Allen sent inexperienced soph Gene Reilly after the Hall game, and the wildness of the neophyte led to a 5 to 2 Maroon defeat. The Bulldogs won their City Series opener from Hart- ford, 4 to 3, behind Raffalo. Unbeaten New London set them back to the tune of 16 to 2, but Raffalo, backed by superb fielding and extra-base hitting support from Liappes and fellow senior John Gun- ning, avenged this defeat by sinking the Whalers, 7 to 2. The Maroons rolled on, defeating East Hartford behind a fine five-hit effort by Buonome, who nor- mally played first base. But when Mark tried for an encore against Hartford, the Owls put together a pair of three-run rallies to beat him, 6 to 4. Raffalo was supreme two days later against New Britain, blanking the potent 'Canes, 6 to 0. For the fourth straight year New Britain came to grief on the Good- win Park diamond, connecting for only four desul- tory hits. But it was succor for Bulkeley for only one day, as plucky Weaver hurler Ralph Marone hung on to defeat the Bulldogs, 6 to 4. Though the team had been repulsed, this didn't deter the amazing Mr. Raffalo. Norwich had gone unbeaten since their earlier Bulkeley game and were now roaring along in first place of the CDC, so all Bob did was whitewash the 'Cats, 3 to 0, in his second straight shutout! His catcher, Joe Houri- han, provided all the support he needed with a booming three-run double. And only two days later, Bob went to the frontline pitching trenches again, and again won, 6 to 4 over East Hartford. Yet even these achievements paled before Bob Raffalo's performance at New Britain. With the hostile Hurricane forces deriding his every pitch, Bob carved his niche in Maroon sporting annals with a two-hit, 2 to 0 masterpiece. After his own stout single had brought in a fourth-inning tally, Bob made this lone run hold up the rest of the way, pitching with the sang-froid of an Early Wynn to secure his greatest triumph. The final game, against Weaver, had to be an anticlimax. The Maroons captured it, 5 to 3, rally- ing in the ninth for the two runs that gave Raffalo his eighth victory without defeat and a 12-l career record. The season thus ended as it had started, with the Mighty Mite spearheading the drive and his mates right behind him, supporting him in the finest Bulkeley tradition. The win over Hartford and Weaver captured the city title for the team. The only two losses came at the hands of powerful New Britain and Manchester. In the meet with Manchester, the team also defeated Norwich for run- ner-up place in the CDC. This year's team saw two real champions bring recognition to Bulkeley High. Bob Mason and Ray Guntulis both qualified to participate in the New England lnterscholastic Track and Field Meet in Boston. In competition with outstanding participants from all of New England, Mason and Guntulis made a fine showing by placing second in the quarter-mile and javelin events respectively. This year's team was truly a credit to Bulkeley High in com- piling a record of nine wins as compared to only two losses. This team was never lacking in spirit or determination - as their record testifies. Even before the start of the season, it was evident that the Maroon tennis team was one which would draw much attention. Three seniors, John Pazdar, Bob Slattery, and ,loe Moran, formed a Terrible Triumvirate which defied all opposition in singles, Pazdar had starred for Bulkeley since his freshman year. Wliile the remainder of the squad didn't meas- ure up to the pace of this trio, the Maroon doubles corps of Tom Albani, Dave Lynch, Tom Corso and Mike Violette were at least adequate. lt indeed ap- peared that the potential of the team which had been budding for three years was about to burst into full bloom. The Maroons opened their campaign with a soft warmup against Class B Newington, winning easily by 4-1. All singles men won handily, with Moran making the most auspicious debut with a 6-0, 6-0 rout. They followed two days later with a 4-1 con- quest of New London, as Pazdar shook off the loss of his first set to join his cohorts, who had posted identical 6-2, 6-3 wins. Slattery and Moran also took ar doubles encounter, 6-2, 7-5. It was Pazdar's turn to post a 6-0, 6-0 calcimin- ing as the Maroons beat Bloomfield, again by 4-l. Moran prevailed 6-1, 6-0, but No. 2 man Slattery came a cropper to Bloomfield's Zito in three sets for what was to be his only defeat. Bob gained some solace by teaming with Pazdar to win easily a doubles match, 6-1, 6-0. On May 9, the Maroons reached the pinnacle. ln a stirring display of courage and clutch tennis, they surged from the depths to defeat St. Thomas Seminary, a two-year college, by 4-1. Slattery dog- gedly stayed with his opponent to win, 7-5, 6-4. Moran picked himself up after dropping his first set and struggled home, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. But if there was any one hero at St. Thomas, it had to be the team's ace and spearhead, John Pazdar. John also lost his first set, 4-6, then snapped back to capture TENNIS UNDEFEATED TENNIS TEAM First row, l.-r.: J. Moran, J. Paz- dar, R. Slattery, T. Albani. Second row, l.-r.: T. Corso, D. Lynch, M. Violette, F. Budarz, Coach Ciampa. the second, 6-2. The decisive, tension-frought final set stretched out to 20 games before John broke through his older opponent to post his triumph, and Bulkeley had carried the day. The Maroons had won their big onef' but had no intention of resting on their laurels. They buried East Hartford, 5-0, with Slattery joining the 6-0, 6-0 club. Pazdar posted his second triumph by this score in a 3-2 win over New Britain, as the singles men again scored a sweep. There followed a rather routine 4-1 win over Weaver, and a 4-1 conquest of Norwich in which Slattery had to extend himself before registering a hard-earned 6-2, 2-6, 8-6 victory. Again Bulkeley beat Weaver by the 4-1 route, with the short-handed northenders posting their only vic- tory in doubles. Now 9-0 on the season and being touted as best in the state by many observers, the Maroons added to their ledger by thumping Wetll- ersfield 3-2. Winning 6-2, 6-1, Pazdar was left with the only perfect individual slate as Moran bowed to VVethersfield's Balfour, 6-4, 6-3. The confident juggcrnaut closed the regular season as they had started it with a 4-1 victory, this time at the ex- pense of New London. Then, with Moran slated to participate in the singles competition and Pazdar and Slattery entered as a doubles tandem, the Maroons set out for the state tournament, with strong designs on no less than first place. Yvhether this ambitious and excellent club could have carried off state honors no one ever will know. For the weathcrman chose the weekend of the big event to play one of his cruel practical jokes. The tourney was washed out, never to be rescheduled because of impending exams. lt was an underhanded and bitter blow to the team, yet Bulkeley was certainly not without con- solation. The Maroons had compiled a perfect rec- ord of eleven victories without defeat, and, more important. these fine sportsmen had added much to the hallowed tradition of athletics at Bulkeley High. GOLF TEAM L r D Leavitt J Kelly, P. Sposito, Coach Christensen, J. Griffith, J. Harvey and T Martin GOLF This year's golf team compiled a mediocre 9-2-1 record. At first glance this record looks quite outstanding. However, four years ago, when we were but lowly freshmen, 1960 was to be a year for great things - a state champion- ship, and undefeated season, etc. Since then, however, a few things have occurred to alter the course to a state crown. For example, Tim Cro- nin, last year's captain and first man, is now wearing out U. S. Army shoe leather instead of his golf spikes. Filling the gap left by his de- parture was the first major job for Mr. Christen- sen, who did a commendable job in his first year at the helm. Pete Sposito and Jim Griffith, number one and two men, respectively, were co-captains. Pete has traveled the fairways for four years in a Bulkeley uniform and during that span he has given quite an account of himself. The team is rounded out by John Harvey, .lack Kel- ly, and Dick Leavitt, all of whom were instru- mental in the seventh place finish among the state's best. Miss Plumb, Mr. Hart sing about love.
