This is no easy task. Hours of hard work and diligent practice are what maintain Bulkeley's high standards. They have led both the players and spectators to many victories this year. TWIRLERS Mrs. Stewart, Advisor, Beverly Lupo, Head Twirler The 1956-57 twirling season got off to a grand start with Mrs. Stewart as faculty advisor. Not only do these girls bubble over with Bulkeley spirit but they have also to catch that flying baton. The twirlers attend football games and during the half, strut out on the field to show their ability. Other highlights of the season were twirling at rallies, at two rally dances, and an all-important success of being the first school in Hartford to twirl at a basketball game. The Bulldogs just couldn't get going and the score hardly showed Bulkeley's worth. The long hard season was hnally over and with their loss to the Hurricanes, the Bulkeley Eleven went down into history. Earlier in the year coaches Allen, Korisky and Karsky had worked with a green squad and turned them into an aggresive, hard play- ing bunch ol fellows with a lot ot' spirit and just plain heart. Even when the chips were down, they never gave in. Humble in victory, glorious in defeat, they were always out there fighting for Bulkeley High, and the honors they could bestow upon themselves and their school. Thus the book closes on the action-packed 1956 season ot the Bulldog Eleven. It was exciting and full ot' thrills from the opener at New Haven to the last few seconds at New Britain. 9 A Little Bleacher Boogie ...,-0 r 4111 , it -Q Qtr' M'-.uf ni'- AQ nd Away He Goes Plain or Mozarellan 101 'ii XJ 4--66 BASKETBALL di 'Wi X wg- BASKETBALL TEAM Standmg left to right R Cunningham Mr Karsky R Kneelmg J Chmxelewskx E Bednarz C Perrone I Rexlly Gilbert A Rudrs M Strogoff T Murray T Mulcahy E Fxsh M Shea W Gustafson Mr Bazzano Bulkeley Bulkeley Bulkeley Bulkeley Bulkeley Bulkeley Bulkeley Bulkeley Bulkeley Bulkeley Bulkeley Bulkeley Bulkeley Bulkeley Bulkeley Bulkeley Total East Hartford Manchester New Brrtam Ha Norwich New London Manchester Weaver Ha Hartford Weaver East Hartford New London Norwich Hartford New Brrtann Won 9 ost 8 Henght and experlence were the bxg problems facmg Lou Bazzano and the Bulkeley qumtet as they prepared for a tough 16 game schedule The Maroons had thelr work cut out for them lf they were goxng to equal last years 12 4 record The Bulldogs opened the season at home shellackmg East Hartford 72 50 In thls lmpressxve w1n the Maroons showed mxd season form dnsplaymg dazzlmg shootmg and passlng that were slmply too much for the Hornets Throw mg up an almost anr tlght zone defense and snatchmg re bound after rebound off both boards the fast breakxng Bazzanomen rolled on They piled up a 19 6 quarter lead rocketed to a 40 19 bulge at half tnme and owned a healthy 52 31 three quarter score The most encouraglng factor for Bulkeley fans and Mr Bazzano was the play of blg Ed Fxsh who was tremen dous under the backboards and ln the pn ot posltlon and also the performances of four newcomers to the squad Mxke Shea Vln Snlpas john Butch Chlemelewskl and Ed Bednarz Rellly and Fish were hxgh men wxth scores ol 17 and 16 respectxvely The Bulkeley gym again was the scene of the second encounter for the Maroons as they played host to Man chester and lost a thrrller rn the flnal seconds of the game 60 59 Manchester wnll probably never won a more hard earned vnctory Another second would have seen a uctory for the Bulldogs rt was that close In thelr next game the Maroons encountered New Brntam and proceeded to whnp the Canes 69 59 Carmen Perrone, jump shot artnst, headed the deadly Bulkeley attack wrth 22 pomts Reilly and Frsh followed with 13 pomts a prece for the nlght's work The Maroons, Perrone and yi!! . Mason, j Puglusi, M. Rocco, S Koda. CROSS COUNTRY This year our Cross Country coach, Flash Atlin, has had one of the most successful seasons that any Bulkeley team has ever known. The Hill and Dalers started off their season by competing in a triangular meet with Hall of West Hartford and East Hartford High. The Maroons were victorious over a very strong Hornet team, squeaking in the win by one point, 28-29. To the surprise of everyone, the Hall Warriors, rated as underdogs, sparked their team and nipped the Bulldogs 26-29. Although the Bulldogs bowed to Hall, they showed good form in beating East Hartford, enhancing their prospects for future meets. Coach Atlin said that senior Rich McKeon, Captain Rich Bailey, Dave Little, Sal Martello, and Orin Ogren deserve much credit for the win over the Hornet Harriers. ln their second encounter of the young season, the Maroons ventured to Willimantic to engage Windham High in a dual meet. This was a glorious day for the Bulldog Harriers, for no less than four runners either smashed or tied the course record of 13 minutes, 45 seconds. Crossing the finish line in record-breaking time was Sal Martell, placing first and establishing a new record of 15 minutes 10 seconds. Close on his heels came Rich Bailey, Dave Little, and Orin Ogren, clocked at 13 minutes 13 seconds, 13 minutes 22 seconds, and 13 minutes 45 seconds respectively. As a- result of these tremendous. times, the Maroons wound up with a 16-39 victory over Windham. 'VI X' art--, How did we place, Flash? The Maroon Harriers now ventured to Keney Park to compete in the Greater Hartford Meet. Bulkeley displayed real team strength in placing second to East Hartford and Hall, who tied for first place. In their next encounter of the year, the Bulkeley High Cross Country Team captured the city title, defeating Hart- ford High and Weaver, at Keney Park. Through the win the Bulldogs tied Norwich for the Capitol District cham- pionship. The Maroons streaked across the finish line placing third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. Leading the way was soph- more Dave Little, taking third place. Close on his heels was Captain Rich Bailey, followed by Ogren, Martelle and senior Rich McKeon. Next the Bulldogs ventured to Storrs for the Sectional Invitation Meet. The Maroon Harriers placed fourth with 118 points, just one point behind Hall High. In the Sec- tionals the Bulldogs defeated some of the top teams in the area. A few days later the Atlinmen ran against Norwich at the Wild Cats' home grounds. The Maroons lost the meet by one point 22-23. Ace Harrier, Rich McKeon took one of the top places. The Maroons, continuing their fine season, placed third in the State Meet at Wesleyan University. The Bulldog Harriers, competing against top-rated teams in the state, did very well in placing third, just 17 points behind first place, Norwich. The following Saturday, the Bulldogs ended their line season, at the New England Championships in Waterville, Maine. The Maroons did exceedingly well, considering the running conditions: two inches of snow, a strong north wind, and below freezing temperature. The Bulkeley Harriers placed twelfth in spite of these handicaps, com- peting against top teams in New England. This race marked the end of another season of cross country, of hard work and effort by both Coach Flash Atlin and the members of the 56 squad. Bulkeley 29 Hall 26 Bulkeley 28 E.
