' A ff' v Kim ,L E - FOOTBALL Last September the football team faced the coming season with the problem of rebuilding. There were only two returning senior lettermen, Jim Reynolds and Joe Mozzicato, and the prospects of a winning season were not too good. As thc season developed, however, so did the players. Each game showed a vast improvement over the one before, as the team gained valuable experience. The first game at Norwich resulted in a 19-6 win, as Reynolds, Kokinis, Donnelly, and Wehr led the way. East Hartford scored a 12-6 victory on the next Saturday, but had to earn every inch they gained. Fine defensive play by Dabkowski and Wehr highlighted this game. Hartford High came rolling back from a 14-0 halftime deficit to eke out a 26-20 thriller. Sal DiTommaso put on brilliant offensive and defensive performances, reeling off several spectacu- lar runs, but it was to no avail. Get that first down! Joe Mozzicato returned to the lineup and sparked the Bulldogs to a 19-6 victory over undefeated New London. DiTommaso scored two TD's in this big upset. The score was the same next time out, but the Maroons were on the other end this time. Powerful Wilbur Cross, ranked first in the state, proved too much for the game Southenders. Arch rival Weaver was the next to pro- vide the opposition, and found themselves on the short end of a 26-7 score. The TD twins, Kokinis and DiTommaso, ran wild against the Beavers. O'Meara contributed to the scoring as he split the uprights twice after touch- downs. Hall invaded the stadium, and fell victim 32-6. Mozzicato caught ten passes as he personally wrecked the Westsiders with his vicious line play. DiTommaso led the scoring with two touchdowns. The final game of the season was one long to be remembered. The Hall game had given Coach Babe Allen his 99th football victory at Bulkeley. Thus the team had a real incentive as it entered the traditional Thanksgiving game at New Britain. The Bulldogs did not disappoint, either, as they came from behind in the fourth quarter to pull out a 7-6 decision. Heads-up play from linemen Shaheen, Beebe, Reynolds, and Mozzicato, and the hard running of DiTommaso, Kokinis, and Vartenigian played a vital factor in the win. Kokinis was later awarded the trophy as outstanding player in the game. Thus the team had given Babe,' his hundredth win, and had represented the first class ever to beat New Britain four years in a row. It had also compiled a 5-3 record, of which it can well be proud in view of its pre-season status. As the season drew to a close, Mozzicato was named to the all-state team and drew honorable mention in an all-American poll. DiTommaso made both the offensive and defensive all-district squad, along with Mozzicato and Beebe. Roger Dorwart We want a touchdown! - Qs I 4 15 ., NQUA, L 'rf' if , 1 s wL a -1 .A Q gm . Q 7 X Come Seven -- Come Eleven The shot that broke the City Record BASKETBALL For the first time since the school opened, the Bulkeley High basketball team started its season under a coach other than Babe Allen. Lou Bazzano, who had previously compiled an excellent record in New Hamp- shire, was chosen to replace the Babe as coach of the 1953-54 basketball team. The rugged pre-season practice schedule that Coach Bazzano had lined up seemed to prove itself in the first game, as Bulkeley romped over East Hartford by 62-44. The next game with West Hartford was a nip and tuck battle all the way, but the Maroons came out on top, winning 49-47. Meriden was the next victim of Bulkeley's undefeated five, 61 to 41. The Maroon's perfect record was broken in the next game, losing to New Britain in a close game, 54-52. Bulkeley got back on the winning trail again in their next game by drubbing a weak Norwich team, 71-47. The next contest was with an undefeated New London team. The Bulldogs, however, led by the sensational playing of Dick Gilbert, came out on top, 62-58. Bulkeley's record was now 5-1, but their next game with un- defeated Weaver was a real trial. Weaver won 50-46, but the Bulldogs proved that they could give any team trouble. Meriden, which was next, didn't have quite enough to upset Bulkeley. B.H.S. 68 - Meriden 61. It was about this time in the season that Bulkeley lost Dick Gilbert and Joe Mozzi- cato for the remainder of the season. Jim Rice and Freshman Joe Reilly moved up to replace these two in the starting lineup. The new Bulkeley five rallied, but lost their following game to Hartford High, 35-30. After defeating Hall for the second time, 61-56, the Maroons bowed to Weaver again, 62-50. In this game Bill Schmidt established a new season scoring for Bulke- ley, breaking the old one which was 237 points. East Hartford proved stubbom in the next game, but the Southenders racked up their 8th win, 58-51, which qualified them for the CIAC tournament in New Ha- ven. Norwich then avenged their previous loss to Bulkeley by beating them, 59-54. The next game in the Trinity Field House with Hartford High proved to be the most exciting game all year. Bulkeley lost a heart- breaker in overtime, 48-44. The Bulkeleyites ran their losing streak to three games by losing to New Britain, 43- 39, in their next game. However, Bulkeley ended the season with a fair 9-7 record by beating New London, 68-61, in their last game. In this game Bill Schmidt established a new district scoring record at 368, break- ing the previous one which was 337. He also broke Bulkeley's single game scoring record at 33, and the district's single game scoring record at 36 by getting 38 in this last game. In New Haven Bulkeley faced undefeated Hillhouse, the top ranking team in the state. The Maroons gave a good account of them- selves, but ended up on the short end of a 57-49 score. The bravery and stamina dem- onstrated by the Maroons on the slippery Arena floor that night, although a 4 to 1 underdog, will long be remembered by Bulkeley rooters. For Coach Lou Bazzano it was the end of his first season with Bulke- ley, during which he coached a team that everyone was proud of. For the Seniors on the team it was the last time they would be privileged to appear on the court in the Maroon and White colors. Dick Lisbon -. R' N 7 Qi if if .2 Z Dont get wet, Boys. SWIMMING The Bullfrogs, with only two seniors on the squad, won two of their ten meets. Captain Lee Kennedy won the diving event eight times out of ten, and also scored several points in the sprints. Jim O'Reilly, the other senior, scored many points in his specialty, the breaststroke. Sophomore Tom Kennedy also contrib- uted heavily to the scoring column. CROSS-COUNTRY The cross-country team ran into a little tough luck this year. Captained by Fred Thompson, the team opened the season at Goodwin Park against Hall and won 23:32. Norm Shiembob won the two and a half mile grind, followed closely by Thompson. Guy Camarca also finished in the top five, as the Atlinmen started off on an encouraging note. However, as the season unfolded, it became apparent that just about every other school in the district was having a banner year in this sport. Comparative times showed that most of the teams Bulkeley met had made a tremendous improvement over preceding years. The team dropped its remain- ing meets, and finished eighteenth in the state meet.
