Imagine! A chance to interview the great archaeologist, Dr. Wayne Swiers, for my newspaper! It was the chance of a lifetime and it should be easy, for Dr. Swiers and I had graduated from high school together. When I located Dr. Swiers, he was on his knees amidst the excavation, carefully dusting a new discovery. Upon a second glance, we were both amazed to realize it was a faded photograph of the graduating class of 1972 our class. | My pen poised over my notepad, I began the interview. “Exactly what caused the destruction of the building, Dr. Swiers?” “Professor Kevin Beard’s physical science class was conducting an experiment. Needless to say it was a booming success. The principal, James Lloyd and the athlet- ic coach, Richard Lucas, were quite upset. They had planned on dynamite and were aggravated that Professor Beard stole their thunder.” “Who reported the accident?” “Several of the teachers were procrastinating in the lounge and notified the proper authorities. Miss Beth Johnson, the 6th grade teacher, kept the home eco- nomics teachers, Misses Glenda Upchurch and Frances Gregory, quiet while the li- brarian, Miss Delorise Holliday, phoned the police. “Earl Jones, now running for President, and his campaign manager, Bruce Blackmon, rushed home from Washington to offer their assistance and boost their campaign. Their competent staff, composed of James McKoy, Randolph Brewington, and Mike Royals carried on in Washington.” “Was anyone hurt in the explosion?” “Those who were then were treated by either therapist, Kathy Betts, or physiolo- gist, Teri Brown.” “How did the students react?” “Those who were attending were thrilled but graduates were appalled. The famous operatic star, Anna Vail, lost her voice for a week and world-acclaimed artist, Bonita Reardon refused to continue her creations. Constance Evans closed down her nursery school in Raleigh and Beth Roseman, Rachelle Shaw, Ronald and Gayle Turner and Terry Vann were forced to keep their own children for an entire week. David Bunn, Dwight Savage, and David Thornton dropped out of the Indian- apolis 500 and raced home to help construct a new building. Sensational author, Mike Todd was at a loss for words and restaurateur, Rex Sorrell, served nothing but bread and water, even to the famous comedians, Rudolph Spears and Terry McLean. Professor Leah McCall forgot to give a Biology exam to her Duke students and farmers in the area such as Gary Currin, David Johnson, Ralph Ryals and John Moyd failed to cultivate their crops. Employees of Campbell College organized a reconstruction campaign and with leaders like Calvin McKoy, Evelyn McKoy, Jo Ann McLean and Hilda McNeil, there will be a new school in no time flat. Minister Daniel Williams is praying for an immediate reconstruction.” “Thank you, Dr. Swiers. Eddie Washburn, our photographer, has finished his feature shots. I can see the headlines now - Excavation Uncovers Explosive School Scandal.” Class Prophet Robin Haney 23 African Safar NEM y al 2s Apr 24 A pecs, adn eer @ LOTS y Sen | 29 Gliie Gill . 5. You left, but your soft steps of sympathy Move still to each soul turbulent in need, Your gentle going did not set you free Of hearts who loved you through each selfish deed. Your ministering spirit warms us still, Your seeds of goodness still continue growing, You left so much of love it seems to fill The very emptiness about your going. TRI-CAPTAINS Ricky Lucas, Earl Jones, Tony Ferrell The Demons work toward building a strong tradition of soccer at B.C.H.S. 43 The 1971 Buies Creek soccer season left us all with mixed feel- ings. Despite an excellent 8-2-1 record, the game which closed the season in the early stages of district play was a source of disappointment, frustration and anger. With visions of “state tournament” dancing in our heads we invaded Wilmington to take on powerful New Hanover. The contest ground through a 0- 0 score during regulation time. In the first of the two overtime periods the Demons pierced the Wildcat’s defense on David Newton’s 10 yard shot. Then, with only 30 seconds remaining, it happened. The disputed call, the penalty kick, the score - New Hanover 1, Buies Creek 1, New Hanover 2 corner kicks, Buies Creek 1. It is indeed unfortunate that this moment of defeat will be remembered far more vividly than the high points such as Ricky Lucas, Tony Ferrell and Mark Johnson combining for 28 goals in 12 games, our exciting win over Benhaven before Buies Creek’s first soccer Homecoming crowd, the sloppy, rain-soaked team which battled a strong Chapel Hill squad to a 1-1 tie, or the consistently brilliant defensive play of goalie Murray Johnson and backs Tony and James McKoy. It should be remembered that this team, was a very fine soccer team, a powerful team, as evidenced by the fact that they scored a total of 37 goals while holding their opponents to only 9. This year’s team combined to build a tradition of strong soccer at their Alma-Mater, and despite the loss of several fine seniors, the team leaves behind a legacy of skill and experience which should result in another strong team next year. Although wounded severely by the “Wilmington experience,” soccer is alive and well and living in Buies Creek. Even the cheerleaders can’t find the ball Our hustling, exuberant boys. in those lights! “Who’s the wise guy that filled the ball What can you say about a coach that with helium?” wears bermudas in the snow? Who’s that in those Finster Glints beside Mr. Howard? One and two and three and four and one “ Allah be praised!” “Tong distance for Barry who?” and fete | 45 First Row: M. Johnson. Second Row: T.
