The purpose of the 1956 edition of THE CREEK is to record the deeds of the boys and girls who for the past year have embodied the spirit of Buies Creek High School. The future years will bring new faces and changes to the school scene, but there will be for us this record of the friends we knew, the things we did, and the memories that will still be dear to us. In later years, while turning these pages, if you should recall the many smiles, sorrows, and dreams of ‘56, we shall be content, knowing that we have done the thing we were called upon to do. The Staff Dedication It is with great pleasure that we, the Senior Class, ded- icate this 1955-56 edition of THE CREEK to one who has long deserved the honor, It is but an humble effort to show our appreciation and heartfelt thanks for her hard work and co-op- eration with the students of Buies Creek High School, to our dietitian, MRS, FANNIE C, HARRINGTON Administration BEAMAN KELLEY, Director of Instruction BESSIE MASSENGILL, Supervisor of Instruction Administration COYTE C, LANIER, Principal PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE- - - - Now that you are nearing the completion of your study here at Buies Creek High School, I would like to express my appreciation for the manner in which you respond. We had a wonderful time laughing and reminiscing over the good times we have had together. We were happy to learn that: Carolyn Jones is now head coach of the Buies Creek Girls’ Basketball Team. Mary Susan Ragland is still looking with the same ambition in mind. Graham Ryals has finally completed hislittle bungalow down on the banks of Black River. J. C. Matthews is a teammate of Mickey Mantle, but he is expecting to be sent down to a farm club any day now. Reid Rogers is still prolonging his education at State College. Jimmy Cates is now a very successful manager of the New York Knickerbockers. He is scouting around Buies Creek for likely prospects, Betty Boyd is still unmarried and happy. Jimmy Baker is now one of the Buies Creek's more successful farmers with his new Farmall Cub, Who's that zooming over Buies Creek almost every day? Why, it is Betty Dorman with her own private plane. It’s sure nice to have someone just out of the Air Force to teach you how to fly. Fordyce Page tells us he is a happy bachelor teaching history at Campbell. Barbara Lane is having a fine time housekeeping in Erwin. She really seems satisfied and happy. Ollie Faye Gaskin tells us she is a secretary in a large diaper manufacturing firm. Lodis Butts is having a wonderful time going to college and wondering where she will transfer to next. Web Turlington has finally established his own acoounting firm and has secretaries for his secretaries. Pete Green is still farming on his old homeplace, but he is keeping a careful lookout for falling airplane tanks. Bobby Dixon is still getting a new Ford every year and has turned into a regular Herb Thomas, Joyce Blanchard has her own future cut out with two little Blanchards. Webster Turlington J. C. Mascots VICKI BLANCHARD RICKI BLANCHARD Class Stistory A large part of the members of the graduating class of 56 entered the first grade together, Among these were: Jimmy Thomas Baker, Mary Susan Ragland, Webster Powell Turlington, Barbara Ann Lane, Ollie Faye Gaskin, Reid Reginald Rogers, James Graham Ryals, Herman Fordyce Page, James Clifton Matthews, and Robert Franklin Dixon. During the eight following years, many were added and a few of our friends left to join other schools. Those who entered our grades at different intervals during the eight years are: Lodis Butts, Betty Drue Dorman, Joyce Dorman Blanchard, Betty Lou Boyd, Carolyn Sue Jones, John Charles Green, and James Bryan Cates, In September, 1952, we, the class of '56, made our first appearance in high school. We were shy and awed by high school routine but we soon settled down and became ac- customed to the excitement of finally being in high school. Our Freshman year was very eventful, meeting our eager expectations with trips and class parties. Everyone's interest wasn't toward study and books but toward the many new activities we were introduced to. The Sophomore year was patterned after the Freshman except for our more mature ways and our deeper interest in education. Feeling a greater need for closeness as only two years were left to be together in school, we began to co-operate more in school. The Junior year was much more thrilling than the past two because in this year the spotlight focused largely on receiving our class rings and the presentation of A Christ- mas Carol, our Junior Play, We ended the year with a bang at our own banquet given for the Seniors, Candlelight was the theme, This, the Senior and long awaited year of every person in the Senior Class, was to be the most important of all the twelve years, We looked forward to our Senior Play with eagerness and our trip to New York was constantly on our minds, The Junior-Senior banquet would be our last formal gathering with our friends in high school. Then with seriousness and dignity we would proudly walk on the stage to receive our diploma as graduates of Buies Creek High School. Though having received our diplomas and com- pleted high school, we would never forget the fun, work, and the closeness we had de- veloped towards each other over the years, Historian Betty Dorman i Lm eee « ffs? y bina eS ma as ee imny Cates = a ry Se Bet abe Sah ae ae oe 7 Bud OO Ls Rutts Barbara Lane FERS S cs!
