GRAMMAR GRADE NEWS FIRST GRADE Miss Williams There are more in the First Grade than any other grade in our school. We are forty-two little folks, having a good time learning to read and write, count and draw, sing and play. We have one little girl who went to school in Panama part of the year, and she knows lots of interesting things to tell us about. We love First Grade but we want to be 2nd next year. THIRD GRADE Miss McKay In addition to our regular curriculum of the ‘‘three R’s’’ our greatest effort has been toward making our classroom a happy place in which to live. We have tried to learn how to live together peaceably, each one carrying his share of the responsibility. Everyday someone has volunteered to put a good thought for the day on the board as our motto. We have cultivated the habit of a reverent attitude toward all things religious. FIFTH GRADE Mrs. Brickhouse We have enjoyed many things this year. We have had two special projects this year. In the fall we studied North Caro- lina trees, their uses, and how to protect them. We spatter printed leaves, and wrote on different trees. This spring we are studying bird friends and foes. We are painting birds, and writing on them. We learned what the vitamins do for us, and what foods they are found in. In the Hallo- ween Carnival our class won the prince and princess con- - test, SEVENTH GRADE Mrs. Chenault Our grade has done many interesting things in art, We have colored birds and butterflies and flowers which were made into booklets for each child. In U. S. history we made a map of the U. S. and added each state as it came into the Union. Twice we have made window scenes cut out of construction paper, pasted upon the window to form these scenes. The teachers voted on them, and the winning group was awarded a prize by the teacher. These scenes have been Christmas and spring. SECOND GRADE Miss Brooks Our projects this year were ‘‘The Jungle,” ‘‘Pets,’”’ and “Holland.’”’ We enjoyed most the project on Holland. In this study we made a sandtable scene, made and cut out pictures of windmills and kites. We learned the following songs: ‘‘My Kite and I,’’ “Children of Holland,’’ ‘‘The Tulip,’”” and ‘The Windmill.’”’” We gave a play in chapel about Holland. FOURTH GRADE Miss Burt We enjoyed our unit on WAYS WE TRAVEL. We found many pictures of different ways people travel. Benny and David brought their trains. We gave a chapel program about famous people who have birthdays in February. We have been working on citizenship all the year. In March we made a citizenship calendar. Miss Burt lets us grade ourselves, At the close of school we ask for a star if we think we have been a good citizen. SIXTH GRADE Mrs, Bradley Besides the usual routine of reading, ’riting, and ’rithme- tic, there have been subjects really enjoye+. The pictures that we have colored have been a source of pleasure. The study of North Carolina was enjoyable and informative. We shall never forget the articles on Tibet by Lowell Thomas, Jr., and the pictures of Tibet made by Lowell, Jr EIGHTH GRADE Mrs. Morgan The Eighth Grade has been prosperous during this year under the careful leadership of Mrs. W. M. Morgan. We have drawn two large maps of North Carolina—one on the blackboard and one on cardboard. We have put the counties in them and are illustrating one of them. We have had sev- - eral nice parties with the help of our grade-mothers.
