P rincipal of State Normal School at Potsdam 22 o There is scarcely any profession in the commonwealth more necessary which is so slightly preformed, said Thomas Fuller, an English essayist of the early seventeenth century, speaking of the teaching profession. Years passed, and gradually the realization dawned that adequate training for tithe goode school- master was an integral part of the educational scheme. lf we were to avoid the blind leading the blind, we must provide an institution especially adapted to the preparation of those who are to guide the youth of the world. Always a leader in educational endeavor, New York State was one of the first to establish means for a system of normal schools in which prospective teachers might receive the best training current at the time. That was in l834. One hundred years have passed, towns have grown to citiesp a rural population has changed to a conglomerate mass of largely urban workers. New thousands of children are filling new thousands of schools, and the first normal school has grown to nine such institutions and two Teachers Colleges. 1934 marks the hundredth anniversary of the establishment of teacher education -a century of growth to which we feel we could no more fittingly dedicate our year book. ln doing this we represent not one State Teachers College, but all of our sister schools throughout the state. As they and their leaders have all been a part of the advancement of the teaching profession, so, too, have they, through their contributions, helped make this volume a chronology of not one college, but of all those in New York State who have chosen to seek the truth, and then in a spirit of love pass it on. 23 LOCAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES EDWARD H. Vice-President V ,,,, W , THE CLASS OF1937 0 With a year of experience and an abundance ot newly acquired wisdom we arrived on the scene in September under the title Sophomores. Our tirst enterprise was the task of guiding Ca mild expressionj the Freshmen through Freshman Daze. Court scenes were enacted, t'justice was levied, and we seemed to successfully exert our power until a bunch of athletic stalwarts temporarily surpassed our Sophomore strength by pulling us through the Lily Pond in Delaware Park. We displayed our good spirit, however, by our reception to the Freshmen in the form ot a dance. Our energies were soon diverted in a new direction as the calendar warned us of the approach ot the Inter-Class Sing. Musical brains were raked for novel arrangements, and we came through with a Fred Waring arrangement ot College Days which, on the tatal day, enabled us to win the coveted pennant. We will ever sing the praises of Cleon Eddie Duchin Service who, with Harold Nissensson, wrote the take-oft, as Well as the feminine sextette which harmonized so superbly. Our Sophomore Sweater Dance was held in the spring and, to the surprise ot all, sweaters and knickers were in the majority. ' This was followed by our big event, a Class Party, which climaxed our Sophomore activities and lent a joyousness to the realization that we are rapidly maturing and soon to become luniors. Before we depart from our present state however, we wish to acknowledge the excellent leadership ot our Class Ctticers, Paul Coleman, Anna Lou Marks, Edith Lawless, and Raye Conrad, our helmsman for two years. 96 ANDERSON, KIRSTEN BALWAN, MICHAEL BARTON, BETTY L. THE RECORD 0 The Record was founded in May, 1913, as a guarterly publication. Since then it has grown gradually until now, 1300 copies are printed each week of the school year. During the past year, the HRecord has covered the field of college news most successfully. Not only did the paper serve the best interests of the students in the regular business of gathering and publishing the news, but it also has been instrumental in bringing about improvements at the college. This year, through the efforts of the editor, Walter Van Buren, many noteworthy improvements have been made in the l'Record. Chief among these improvements are: the addition of Collegiate Digest, the new Alumni column, the use of more photographs, and the inauguration of a News Bulletin Service. The Collegiate Digest has given us a glimpse of the collegiate world, of which we are but a small part. The Alumni column has kept us in touch with the activities of many of our former students. The wide variety of pictures that have been printed in the 1'Record have brightened the paper, and served to enliven interest in college happenings. The use of so many pictures would have been impossible on the regular blanket tax appropriation, but for the co- operation of the Buffalo Evening News and the Buffalo Times. The newly established News Bulletin Service has been a worthy supplement to the regular columns of the paper, and many last minute items would have been missed by the students had it not been for this service. We hope it will remain a regular feature in the future. 143 5 Q WALTER C VAN BUREN EUGENE B HOEFFLER T H E R E C O R D ASSISTANTS Feature Wr1ters GOLDYNE CARREL FREDA GUBENKO LOIS FOX EDWARD IONES SPBCISI Wnters GERTRUDE HIMMERT FRANCES NELSON Heads REVA FISH DOROTHY KRAUS PHYLLIS LAZERSON ROBERT LENZ RAYMOND RADTKE Reporters FLORENCE BEBEE MICHAEL FENIELLO THELMA HUBBARD KAY IOHNSTON MARGARET KOTAN ROSE LOMBARDO CATHERINE MOORE BETTY BOWERY LEONARD BUCKTON CHARLES DESMOND LOIS GREEN KATHRYN HERBOLD Typ1sts EVELYN NICOUD MARY OBENAUER ZITA OLIVER EDWARD ORGEK GLENWOOD PENSLIEN RUTH STIEG GLAD-YS YOUNG RUTH HUMAN MARGARET KANE BETTY SANFORD RUTH SUGARMAN MILDRED TINGLER Bus1ness Staff SARA CARREL IOHN SYZDEK IULIA STEPIEN ALICE WAITE Make Up EARL NITCHKE RUDOLPI-I BROWN Clrculatlon EVERETT KOEHLER ALBERT LINDEMANN Faculty Adv1sers MR. Right in step, then, with modern social trends, is the development on our campus of a group of musical organizations which seek to stimulate musical expression in a variety of forms and to have, not only many opportunities for appreciative enjoyment, but a large percentage of actual participation. That they succeed in this is well shown in the extra-curricular survey which in- dicated that more students are participating in musical organizations than in any other extra- curricular activity. From the first of the year's programs, beginning with the Stephen Foster program in the fall, to the last, with Commencement Exercises in lune, they call forth an enthusiastic response. Nor is their popularity confined to our college walls, for We have had a prize Winning Glee Club which has received first place in competition with Cornell, Syracuse, University of Buffalo, Keuka and other Western New York college women's glee clubs. The band has stimulated the appeal of athletic contests and the orchestra increased the enjoy- ment of Assemblies and dramatic performances. Men's Cflee Club and lunior Women's Glee Club have helped to make the year's program a success. What they have achieved has been due not only to their own efforts but also to the unflagging enthusiasm and the capable direction they enjoy in the leadership of the faculty of the Music Department, Miss l-lurd, Miss Speir, and Miss MacMahon. For increased musical enjoyment to State We hope that a policy similar to that which has been carried on before, Will be pursued, and We are certain that such a program will ensure continued success. l47 FOURTH ROW-Stepherldage, DiV1ta, Pandolphi, Lawless, Steak, Kather, Schutt, Smnth, Carter, 'Young THIRD ROW-Slacer, Masters, Grant, Schultz, Barber, Halfelder, Tmw, Hanes, Griffith, Coppola, Murray, Mergemhaler, Renz SECOND ROW-Miller, Ynengsr, Lana, Kerr, Duggan, Regan, Osborne, Passage, O'Cormor, Russ, Zerby, McDonald, Lars, Kelly FIRST ROWfHarbison, Pirie, Galsgie, Rout, MaCvuire, Moore, Abare, Kuhn, Speir, Kohler, Hubbard, Neg, Oliver, Zoller, Matteson WOMEN'S SENIOR GLEE CLUB OFFICERS DOROTHY KUHN ..... . ................ ...... Vice-President THE YORK NATIVITY 156 THE CHARACTERS AT WORK 0 What is the preparation of the actor for his 'first night' appearance? The answer to this question is to be found by following the actor from the time he becomes a member of the cast to the presentation of the finished performance. Upon receiving his role, the actor reads the play to acquire a working knowledge of the character he is to portray. l-le must realize the mind of his character at work, picture him in numerous situations other than those in the play, acquaint himself with the idiosyncrasies of his role, and conform his voice and carriage to the character. A complete character study is neces- sary to a convincing characterization. ln case of unforeseen circumstances occurring during a performance, a complete understanding of the character's philosophy will enable an actor to improvise convincingly. An excellent example of improvision was given in last Spring Play. The king called for his Major-General, and after a reasonable length of time had elapsed and no Major presented himself, the king ad libbed for fully three minutes until the Major's arrival. A true characterization is achieved through constant thought, conferences with directors, and many reading rehearsals. Once the character is conceived in the mind of the performer, the play is ready for regular rehearsal. First rehearsals are usually taken in scenes. Each scene is carefully analyzed for dramatic sequence, possibilities, and climaxes. Parts of each scene are rehearsed separately to insure a convincing delivery. After each individual scene has been rehearsed as a single unit, the play is ready for continuity. The connecting of these units into one solid performance is known as developing con- tinuity. lts chief purposes are to establish a sense of unity in the actors' minds, to connect these individual scenes into a complete script, to weave together all plots, and to show the connections between these plots. lt is by this means that all climaxes are made clear, and all important scenes are visualized in their true relations. After the group rehearsals are unified, the actors are ready for the physical aids of production fcostumes, make-up, properties, lights, and sceneryl. A few rehearsals are undertaken with full equipment to insure the acquaintance of the actors with their surroundings. lt is by the means of this local color that the final touches are able to be added. The spirit in these properties gives to the characters just the tinge of realism necessary to make their characters real, and forceful. The play is now ready for a final dress rehearsal. The fact that this is the last opportunity for the director to clear any discrepancies, or change any features makes this the highlight of the rehearsal period. lt is Miss Goossen's custom to hold one uninterrupted dress rehearsal, and to follow it with final criticisms. In this way she assures herself that the play is natural and un- restricted. This rehearsal gives the characters the confidence which so aids in the success of the first night. The final production-the first night performancefis the triumph of these weeks and months of continuous rehearsal. There is a sense of real satisfaction when the Curtain Falls. l57 AILEEN MA GUIRE. . . ESTI-IER HARBISON. . . RUTH WESTENFELDER ROSEMARY SCHULTZ. The new year has found State more sport 'lconscious than ever before. All athletic activities have felt this guickening enthusiasm on the part of both student body and faculty. Swimming, soccer and golf have ventured into the field of intercollegiate competition. Great interest has been shown in boxing, wrestling and cross-country. In particular has the basketball team felt the uplift in college athletic spirit and that spirit has served to inspire them on to the State Championship of Teacher Training Institutions. So great was the attendance at games that even the new bleachers designed by Mr. Perkins were scarcely adequate to provide for the overflow crowds. To provide for the enlarged scope of athletic activity a committee under the chairmanship of Nel Upton formulated a new constitution for the Association. With the continued interest and cooperation of students and faculty, the athletic future of State seems assured of success. 167 PAUL COLEMAN, guard, forward FRANCIS DAVIES fcaptainl, forward ARTHUR MICHLIN, guard BASKETBALL 1934-1935 0 State has at last found its place in the college basketball sun. For the first time in many years, a team of real college caliber represented us on the courts. Displaying a high-class brand of ball backed up with plenty of fight our club ran through a schedule of fourteen games in avictory march stopped only by those heart-rending losses to the powerful Monteagles from Niagara University. ln winning the mythical Teacher Training School Championship the team convincingly avenged last season's defeats at the hands of such good teams as Ithaca College, Cortland and Brockport. Playing to capacity crowds both at home and on the road, State served notice that her Sophomore team will menace Western New York colleges for at least two more years. Since overwhelming victories over the normal schools have proved our team to be of college rating, next year will find us competing against more and more teams in this class. Those two Niagara games in which gallant State rallies fell short by three points and one point have only served to whet our appetite for next year's contests with the purple-clad men of Taps Gallagher. For the first time, State placed men on All-Western New York teams. Honors fell to HArt Michlin, picked as first team guard on the Courier-Express team and Stan Raiman being picked for a guard position on The Buffalo Evening News team. High Herman Schwarz, Pug- nacious Paul Coleman and Fancy Dan Zwick received honorable mention. The work of Captain Fran Davies and Bobby Reist commands space at this time. Reist especially came 168 STANLEY RAIMAN, guard HERMANN SCHWARZ, center DAVID ZWICK forward on fast at the end ot the season and made his presence felt mostly in that hectic game at Geneseo Davies, Hickey, and Earl Griswold played their last in the Fredonia game ending tour years of competition on State teams. Much credit is due Mr. Coyer for his Work in assembling and directing the fortunes ot the team and both for his sake and State's may future years be even more bright State State State State State State State State State State State State State State THE SCHEDULE ..............Niagara . . .... Under the instruction of graduate coach lohn Butler, the team worked faithfully in their effort to compensate for circumstance and an only too apparent lack of material. To State's team goes the distinction of bringing the first intercollegiate swimming meet ever held in Buffalo right to our campus. This meet, with the University of Toronto, and subsequent duals with such formidable opponents as Niagara, Cornell, and McMasters CCanadaJ University finally establish swimming on a permanent basis. The fact that several of these schools decisively defeated State's goldfish does not detract one iota from the credit due Captain Albert Kreinheder and his teammates for their fine efforts and finer spirit in behalf of State's first tank team. The prospect for smoother sailing on next year's swimming ship of State takes on a rose hue when one considers that State's lineup is studded with Freshmen. With the splendid spirit of co-operation shown by Miss Houston and Mr. Coyer in support of the team, this embryonic sport at State will prove its worth as it is given time to grow. This year twelve section teams from all classes have competed in two series ot games: an upper class series and a Freshman series. The winners of the two groups play for a section championship decision. From these section teams girls are chosen for tour class teams. The Freshmen play the Sophomores and the luniors play the Seniors with the winners playing tor the class championship. The final game of the year is that between the Orange and the Black which teams are chosen from the best players on all the teams. Playing in this game is the highest basketball honor a girl may achieve. Badminton is one ot the newer sports arousing much interest among the girls. This year three tournaments will be rung girls' singles, girls' doubles and mixed doubles. 172 ' A tennis tournament in the fall brought out the best players in this sport although tennis is offered in the spring as well. Archery, too, has its devotees. State has placed well in several intercollegiate telegraphic archery meets as well as having its top archers gain recognition in local meets. The climax of the year in swimming is the girls' meet in May in which events are run off for the novices who have learned to swim in their Freshman year, and also for the more experienced swimmers. Qur goal is: every Freshman a swimmer by the end of her first year. The swimming picture shows those advanced swimmers who are gualifying for the Red Cross Life Saving Certificate. To round out our extensive program we offer in addition to these sports, soccer, horseback riding, playground ball and table tennis. 173 RENZ SCHULTZ KUCHEN HOLDERBAUM BACK ROW STANDING Dole Smead Ruskouskx Msfllxwxv Xxchols Sxssan BACK ROW SITTING Mxmwraw Povten Pxcrct Colbv Read FRONT ROW SITTING Burhy Pack Kempmr Henrv NOT IN PICTURE Buwem H111 Kmmedx Pemsou Ps ew LII nh 174 PLATTSBURG- STATE NORMAL AND TRAINING SCHOOL Founded 1889 Wx' 'RQ gl AAN Him! gl V n -i , , , Q 3 ul gyygf A ll , funn , HM X lllmlfgl Mm!Ml5 1 XC Q j if E ul ' , . ,A.
