'3 I , A . - - O , . 9 . , Sl-IE DIDNT KNOW WI-IY She was ten and she knew she shouldnt be In that room But her parents had been crying when she came In from play and so they didnt notrce she was there She looked at her grandmother whose emaclated body was lost In the folds of the fourposter bed Her grandmother was so fragrle e d er chlna shepherdess IH the curio cabrnet she was never allowed to touch Only the shepherdess had rosy cheeks and her grandmother had no rosy hue she was gust blue and sllver Silver hatr with blue streaks and sllver skln with the blue verns shownng through And her eyelids they were closed now and they were very blue Her grandmother lay very strll there was no anlmatlon about her except for her llps The lrps were cracked and dry and sllver but they curved softly upward guvung the hunt of a smlle ln fact her whole face seemed to smlle perhaps rt was lust the way the early afternoon sun reflected on the lumrnous silver of her cheek perhaps but stall she really looked as though she were smlllng And to Karen rt was strange to see her grandmother smllmg because she had not smrled rn a very long tame even when she was well she had not smrled In fact she had stopped smrllng when she flrst came to lrve at Karen s house And Karen was very happy when she saw her grandmother smrllng Maybe her grandmother would get well now Then they could go to the zoo together lust as they used to Those zoo days had always been such fun days even for grandmother The two of them would walk unwearylngly throughout the entire park and grandmother would tell her favorute story about the dancrng bear back In Germany But slnce grandmother had had her stroke Karen had not been able to go to the zoo or to the ballet or to any place Her parents were always too busy to take her anywhere lt was sllly for her to even ask them though once she had Onc a luttle vvhlle after grandmother had taken suck she had asked her mother to take her to the ballet bu well ut certainly had been srlly to ask As always her mother had been much too busy Besides mother had sand that grandmothers Illness was costrno the family too much money to allow anyone to go to the ballet But that was what mother had always sand that grandmother was costlng them too much money even when grandmother flrst came to lrve with them and then grandmother had been well Perhaps that was why grandmother had never smiled much But she was smllmg now and Karen was very happy Perhaps the pam drd not hurt as much todav Of course she really couldnt be sure because grandmother had not been able to speak after the stroke But usually grandmothers eyes spoke for her Karen remembered her bnrthday rt had been lust a few weeks ago Her parents had given a bug party for her and all her frlends lt had been her flrst real party certornly her flrst grownup party She had worn stockmgs and llpstlck for the flrst time And her cake that was the best of all It was a huge cake wnth ten candles a tremendous yellow cake 56 D , . . But before the cake was served she had slapped unto the room to see grandmother Grandmother had not been blue and stlver then She had been all yellow even her eyes especnally her eyes They had looked at Karen so mrserably two suns of burnmg yellow so tathomless deep and so full of musery And Karen had not returned to her bug grownup party Somehow the yellow of the cake was too luke the yellow of her grand mother s eyes and so she had not gone back She had pleaded slckness and she really dld feel suck It was almost as though her grand mothers SUHSFIHQS were her own suffermgs She could almost feel the pam But now there could be no pam Karen was posltlve of that There was a calm peaceful glow that shone over the entire body of her grandmother Almost too calm there was no movement not even the ruse and fall of a sheet nt was almost as though she were Karen gave a start Grandmother' she whnspered In a suppressed somehow awe struck tone of voice And she land her ear agaunst the shrunken breast There was no sound Her grandmother was dead Her grandmother was dead' But Karen felt no shock she felt no tears welllng msude her She felt no sadness She could not There seemed no reason to Her grand mother lust lay as If sleeplng sleeplng a calm peaceful sleep And she looked happy She dud not look sad she looked happy so happy much happter than she had ever looked alnve At flrst Karen could not understand that why her grandmother looked so happy Mother always sand people were afraid to du But grandmother certaunly dtdnt look frlghtened She lust looked happy Karen could not understand but then she remembered Once she had asked her grandmother lf she would feel sorrow In dymg And her grandmother had answered that her sorrow could come only from pam the pain of the unhapplness and the pam of sufternng So Karen looked once more at her grandmother s face lust to make sure But she really was smllnng There could be no doubt about that Yes her grandmother was happy No longer dld she feel any pam enther kmd of pam And because her grandmother was happy Karen was happy There was no reason to feel sad She walked out of the room wnth a smnle Karen' her mother crued forgetting her hysterical tears for a moment as she saw the bedroom door open and the llttle figure slnp quletly out Where have you been9 57 ' r -1 . -1- . . I ' ,, T t I T Y so - -- TEIQQGR Ol: TI-IE SEA My mmd stlll churnlng In a maze of horrld memories seems dulled to the fact that I am flnally on my way to safety The people huddled about me are srlent but therr eyes stlll show the fear they have known As my thoughts slowly clear there IS none of the drnvlng panic that has gripped me for so long Instead there comes a calm but completely desparrlng realnzatron of what I must face I cannot cry for my body seems stripped of all emotlon I lust feel a deep and hollow loss and a dulllng lonelmess I remember about four days ago or was It a week? It has seemed like such a long nrghtmare I cannot recall when It really began It was a nlce day not clear and warm but cold and crrsp with that lnvlgorates you I was In a cheerful mood as I went about my everyday chores on the farm But there was a worry In the back of my mmd because I felt Aunt lngrtd was comlng down wlth somethlng I loved my aunt and uncle very much and I always wondered what I would do If anythmg ever happened to them They were really luke parents to me as my own parents had died when I was very young I had come to llve on their small farm and there received all the love and devotron any grrl could want I had rarely known luxury but I was rlch In happiness and securrty As the day progressed the sky became dark and menacing and a strong wund Increased un velocnty A few raindrops splashed on my face and as I trudged across the fleld with Uncle Crls he squeezed my arm and said Looks like qurte a storm brewung child Help me fetch some wood so we can have a roaring fire tonught I always loved Uncle Crrs roarnng flres because they gave the room such a warm and peaceful glow and made me feel so secure I went to bed very tered that nlght but I could not get to sleep The wind was howling around the house and the ram was beatmg furlously upon the roof I used to luke to lrsten to the rnuslcal patter of the ram but there was nothlng rhythmrcal about thus storm It seemed to be taking a furrous vengeance and seemed to be carried away wrth nts wrldness Farntly I could hear Uncle Cris paddung around closing all the shutters and rmpatuently tellung Aunt Ingrid to get off to bed before she caught pneumonua Although he trred hard to keep It from her I had the feeling that he was worrled I found myself flghtmg a strange fear In the put of my stomach as I lay awake staring unto the darkness Then convlncrng myself that everything would be fine an the mornmg I covered my head with my pillow and finally fell Into a troubled sleep 59 . ' I I I I I just a hint of sunshine, the kind of day Then around mudnrght I guess I awoke wnth a start What was rt9 Something had awakened me I knew I had heard somethmg over the terrible dm of the storm There there It as agasn The tolling of the church bell In my confused state I trred to flgure out why I would hear the churchbell at thus hour of the nught As I started to clnmb out of bed a freezing chlll suddenly gripped me and I grabbed for a blanket to put around me It was so dark and the ragung storm was so loud I was fllled wlth panrc I let the lantern and started for the door to get Uncle Cris when Aunt Ingrld burst un She had a lantern In her hand and IH nts lrght her ace was a ghastly whute and her dark eyes wade wlth disbelief and horror She had her mght clothes on but over them she had thrown her old threadbare coat whlch she was clutching about her shoulders Then In a shaken and almost hysterlcal vonce she sand to me Hurry child get some clothes on oh please hurry he p us keep the water out there us water all over we re sur rounded by It Then she was gone and I could hear her stumbling down the creaky stairs I stood there for a moment nn my Ilttle room under the eaves the roar of the wmd and raln all around me the fllckerlng lantern castrng welrd shadows on the walls and through It all the mournful tolllng of the church bell Was It a dream'9 Yes ut must be a horruble dream My eyes fell upon my Ilttle prayer book In a flt of angulsh and terror I fell on my bed and crted out Oh Lord why drd you let thus happen9 Please let ut stop let It stop I lay ther holdung my ears trylng to blot out the vnolent sounds of the storm Then feeling a sense of shame I got hold of myself dressed qulckly and made my way down the stanrs my trembling hand holding the lantern over my head When I reached the bottom of the stanrs the sight that met my eyes so stunned me that I grasped the banlster for support The floor was covered with about a foot of water and Uncle Cris soaked up to has knees was desperately trylng to stuff old rags under the door to keep the water out The force of the wmd had rlpped olf the shutters and knocked out most of the wnndow panes allowlng the ram to sweep In In great gusts Aunt Ingrld her grey hanr molst and stragglmg nn her face was puttlng blocks of card board over the wrndows only to have them blown out agaun Mutely I splashed across the floor and began to help her Uncle Crus seemingly unaware of the water around hum mumbled to humself A fine lot of good the warning signal does now The dukes must have broken Then realnzlng what he had sand he trred to cover at up by addmg Oh but well be lust flne If we can keep this water out We re on higher ground you know The rest of that night IS a maze of disaster to me In the raglng blackness of the night the water rose hxgher and higher Our frantic efforts seemed heedless Wlth one great splmtenng crash the roof was blown off and carried heaven knows where There was a constant look of terror on Aunt lngrld s now haggard face and as the night wore on she developed a fever and had to be put to bed With the approach of dawn came the realuzatuon that It was no longer a flght to save our home but a struggle for our Iuves The house was groanlng and swaying danger ously under the terrlflc force of the wmd and the light of dawn revealed that the ram had turned Into cold drlvnng sleet All around us the water surged luke a massnve ocean carrymg with It parts of homes fences shrubbery and yes cows Dusaster was every where As ' gazed upon the turrnoll my head throbbed wlth fear of what was to come Would we ever be rescued9 How long could the house endure Its constant punrshment 60 I 1 1 - - . . , 1 1 . , . , . . . . . These questuons rattled un my braun unanswerable I felt despaurung After an endless day of fighting the unceasung storm and my own fears together wuth carung for Aunt Ingrud as best as possible my senses dulled to the pount of deluruum I was cold and wet and weak and the dread of facung another black nught wuth uts unvusuble terrors grupped me Then the boat came The boat that would carry us to hugh ground and safety from the turbulent waters For the present the raun and sleet had ceased but the wund contunued un uts puercung velocuty whuppung up a freezung spray As we moved away from the house I knew wuth a dull ache that I would never see ut agaun as ut could not possibly withstand any more poundung In the front of the boat a woman sat sobbing over the motionless form of a small boy In her arms and th complete desolation and damage all around me tore at my heart Puty for others began to outweugh my own fears and dreads We left Uncle Crus at the dukes where t ams of men and solduers were feverushly trying to repaur them From the boat we were then transferred to a truck and wuth absolutely no possessions to our names we finally reached a hugher level of ground where the rusung water could not reach us Thus was where my new horror began Hundreds of homeless refugees huddled under meager blankets and canvas tents were left alone to face the oncomung nught and a new druvung deluge of sleet and snow Many who had survived the first onslaught succumbed to exposure and slupped unto death from theur precaruous perches of safety It was durung this nught that I lost my aunt the loneluness and horror I knew that nught Death and destructuon were all around me and all that I had ever known and loved had been completely strupped from me un a few days The new storm poundung merculessly brought the fear that we would be marooned by the ever rusung water and perush by drownung Amud the chaos there were some who were hysterical whule others refused to leave theur homes and had to be forced from attucs and roof tops In my confusion and dread I realuzed that uf I kept busy ut mught help me to forg t my loss Perhaps ut would allay the thought ol never seeing Uncle Cris agaun I therefore began to work feverishly to help the suffering around me By the followung afternoon the fury of the wund and snow had abated and wuth the break un the clouds I found new hope un the probable evacuatuon by helucopter Now huddled un the plane over an endless sea wuth o muxed sense of paun and reluef I remember the land as ut used to be green fertule and productuve The memory of my life before ut was torn by thus tragedy us dum but ut brungs back the awful feelung of emptuness I have nothung I dont even know where Im goung and I feel cold and suck But am I any dufferent from hundreds of other people un thus strucken area'9 I cant lust guve up now The one precuous thung that God let me keep was lufe and somehow I wull find Uncle Crus Together wuth God s help we can buuld a new exust nce Some day the countryside I knew and loved so well wull agaun be green and fertule Anne Lapey l954 6I ' I - , , . , , . , , . .
