They are nominated by Annual Staff and then voted on by a select group of faculty, students, and personnel. Selecting the students for these positions was not an easy job. Some of the various recognitions are most friendly, most athletic, most tal- ented, most courteous most dependable, most humor- ous, and most school spirit. Also among these positions are the most honored couple, who are chosen as Bison King and Queen. Jeff Shepperly (Bison King) and Susie Miller (Bison Queen). 36 37 EOPLE WHO ARE THE MOST . . . 1. Known for production of the yearbook, this or- ganization stores memories and events of a lifetime. The traditional initiation process of the Annual Staff is for Senior mem- bers to rig up any absurd activities for Junior members to accomplish throughout a normal school day. This year, Junior members were required to dress as the cast of Gillfgan's Island 7 Throughout the day they were to acquire items such as grasshoppers, dead or alive, a meatball from the cafeteria, and the like. Annual Staff is not just fun and games. Layouts must be completed so deadlines can be met. A lot of af- terschool time is put in so the students and faculty of BHS can receive their yearbook before school lets out. Mrs. Janice Cole, Annual Staff spon- sor, helps to keep things rolling and spends valuable time proofreading and explaining critical points. Her time and patience is much appreci- atedbv all the Annual Staff person- nel. ■ Top photo: Becky Lane, Sharon Branch, Carrie Lilley, Christy Beltz, Jackie Andrews. The primary purpose of the organization is to provide the school with the best library services possible. Our club is a member of Epsilon Beta, a statewide organization of high school library assistants, which meets once a year to discuss problems com- mon to all school libraries in Missouri and to exchange ideas on how to make our libraries better. The club has two social events during the school year, they are a Christmas ban- quet in December and a breakfast for the seniors in May. As a service pro- ject, the club members read to pre- school children on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the public library. The library Club is sponsored by Joy Har- rison and Donna LaCrue plus addi- tional assistance is provided by Louise Van Hoosen, a Green Thumb worker. The goal of this year, 1980-81, was to up membership and to in- volve families. There were quite a few events F.H.A. was involved in this year. It started off with the Back to School Dance, which the F.H.A. spon- sored. It was well attended. F.H.A. was also involved in helping the March of Dimes. This year their fund raiser was a powder puff football game. Due to the cold weather, the attendance was poor. The F.H.A. Re- gional Meeting was held at Silver Dol- lar City in the courthouse. After the meeting, a special performance was given to the F.H.A.ers by the court- house cast. It was enjoyed by all. The next activity was the Barnwarming in which the F.F.A. hosted the F.H.A. Then in February the F.H.A. enter- tained the F.F.A with the Heartthrob. In December the Donkey Basketball Game was held. Those F.H.A.ers that were brave enough entered. It was enjoyed by all who attended. It was sponsored by the F.F.A. F.H.A. en- tered a float in the Homecoming Pa- rade and also in the Christmas Pa- rade. In the Christmas Parade they placed third. At Christmas time they went caroling at the local nursing homes. They also had a gift exchange of homemade items. These girls exercise their precision marching skills in various parades, and football and basketball routines throughout the year. To start off the year the Gals went to Fort Madison, Iowa to participate in the Tri-State Rodeo Parade. They also attended the rodeo that night, and the highlight of the evening was having their arrival announced. This was the first long distance trip the Gals have made in four or five years. Later on in the year the Gals went to S.M.S.U. to participate in their homecoming parade. The Gals proved to the judges that they had the most spirit there by coming home with the Most Spirited award out of the 31 units there. The Gals also placed second among all the other drum corps there. The Gals successes are at- tributed to their hard work and pride to the group. They've added quite a flare to the group by showing off with new ban- ners. The Gals would like to thank their sponsor and friend, Mr. Bryan Elhard for all the help and support he has given them! FRESHMAN DRAMA CLUB 62 People Who shot J.R.? The 1980-81 school year saw many things happen. We tried to captivate some of the high points in a new PEOPLE” section. On November 4, 1980, the Presidential election was held. The American PEOPLE were pretty well split between Carter, Reagan, and Anderson during the primary election. But when it came right down to it, Reagan plunged ahead and was sworn in as the Fortieth Presi- dent of the United States. The Ameri- can hostages that were held in captivity for four-hundred and forty-four days were released, January 10, 1980. They were taken to Germany to recuperate then returned home to their families. Who shot J.R.? That was a mystery that everyone was trying to solve. We all had our own ideas of who the culprit was. It was Sue Ellen because J.R. was so mean to her. It was Kristin. No, it wasn't. It was Cliff Barnes because J.R. ruined his chance for senator. The first show of the season found us all at home in front of the television. We were all disappointed to find out that we had to wait two more weeks to find out that Kristin was the one who shot him. During the summer we all witnessed the drought. We saw crops burn up and we spent lots of hot days in the blistering heat. We also heard about all the fires in California. We were wondering if something like that would ever happen here. We hope not.H 64 wan THE SNOBS AGAINST THE SLOBS. The first one was Steve McQueen, a fa- mous actor. We used to see him on the screen at theatres and drive-ins. It was a shock to find out that he died of can- cer in a hospital in Mexico. McQueen was fifty years old. John Lennon was shot outside his apartment in New York. He had just re- leased an album with his wife Yoko Ono, called Double Fantasy. The single that was released a few weeks before his death, Starting Over , climbed to number one on the rock music chart. Lennon was forty years old and a former Beatle. Although most of us were young, we still like to listen to the older albums they made. The last one made us all smile when we ate his delicious chicken made with his secret recipe of eleven herbs and spices. Colonel Sanders, the man who started the Kentucky Fried Chicken stands across America, passed away. Although he is gone, his dream still lives on. 1981 looked into the future the space age, as we call it, maybe sooner than we think. NASA has been working on a space shuttle called The Columbia since 1969. It is now finished and will serve America with all sorts of uses. This was the year that the Phillies won the World Series. That was the first time in all of the 98 years that they played ball. I'M TURNING JAPANESE, I THINK I'M TURNING JAPANESE.: . . . That seemed to be true this year after SHO GUN played on the screen. Everyone was glued to the television wondering if Blackthorne would survive and get back to America. Or if he would stay in Japan and live with Lady Mariko. As it turned out Lady Mariko was killed and Black- thorne was doomed to stay in Japan the rest of his life. Because of the movie, Japanese knick-knacks went up in cost. We saw things come up and things go down. One of the first things that went up was the new Buffalo Bank. We watched while it was being built and waited pa- tiently for its grand opening. Do you remember Friday and Saturday nights up on the square? Everyone tried to prove they had the hottest rod and would burn rubber as they left. Speaking of burning rubber ... We all heard about Pepper Davies car lot burning down on New Year's Eve. Mr. Davies ran into the burning building to get some papers. He received burns on his legs and body. We had a new attraction added to the square. Paradise Donut Shop opened for anyone who wanted fresh pastries. For those of us who were wondering around with nothing to do you could go to the new game room and try your hand at space invaders or any of the other games there. Like any other area, we've had our share of bandits. Remember the Ur- bana bank robbery: The culprits were from Bolivar and Springfield. When their car tore up they borrowed a nearby resident's vehicle. They were fi- nally caught in Kansas City and the money was returned. Buffalo, Missouri, is the roughest Buf- falo in the U.S.? That's what OUI maga- zine said. A lot of Dallas County PEOPLE were pretty upset about this. B 80 The gifted and talented students in Mr. Ris- berg's 7th grade class were honored by a camp- out for their hard work. Among the pupils attending were Lara Barnhart, Tami Caswell, Gari Ann Clark, David Clemmons, John Crowder, Christy Frey, Mike Hancock, Mark Hawley, Sandra Haymes, Brandon Hill, Janet Hill, Lynn Huntley, Susan Hurst, Julie Kay, Dawn Keith, Janie Lane, Jannette Mathews, Steve Murphy, Ginger Potter, Wade Rambo, Karen Rupe, Todd Smith, Linda Smitherman, Michelle Stansberry, Marcy Williams, Shawn Poyser. Funfilled activities included softball, tug-o-war, and just the general goofing around. The successful campout has younger students hoping to keep up the tradition. H 81 On August 22 we were all officially back to school ' The first main activity to involve the student body, and establish the official opening of activities, was the Back to School Dance. The dance was more than an opportunity to boogie. It was more than a chance to sport new disco garb, too. The dance gave us all a special chance to re-unite with friends, and to assist in a money making project as well. The Future Homemakers of America (FHA) chapter at BHS sponsored the dance on September 13. The FHA girls have held this dance for 3 years now, and it has become an annual anticipated event. It has also be- come a traditional FHA activity to help raise funds to keep the club operational. The music for the Back to School Dance was disco provided by KBFL radio station. H 83 On the day of December 6th and on the evening of De- cember 20th the spirit of Christmas was celebrated a few days early. The week before Christmas at school was very busy. There was of course, the usual Christmas assembly, which included singing from a faculty choir, a select group from the Mixed Chorus, and the brass members of the band played a few Christmas songs. Each year the student body picks a Miss Merry Christ- mas. The 1980-1981 Miss Merry Christmas was a fresh- man, Miss Laura Hicks. Laura is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Hicks. Laura reigned over the commu- nity Christmas parade, Saturday, December 6th. She rode near the front of the parade in a fancy Model A Ford owned and driven by Don Maddux. Laura's attend- ee were: Miss Sharon Branch—Senior, Miss Jana Bates—Junior, and Miss Shannon Sample—Sophomore. Although the weather threatened to wash out the pa- rade, it finally stopped and the parade was a great suc- cess. The students also held the annual Christmas Dance the night of December 20th. The main theme this year was Celebration 81 . Looking around the B.H.S. campus during the week preceding the festi- val, you might have seen such things as hobos, punk rockers, people dressed backwards, and people show- ing their school spirit. To top off the week, Vicky Wallace, last year's queen, was present to turn her crown over to a very happy new queen, Lau- ren Wolfe. Lauren's escort was Pat Blair. The crowning took place be- tween the A and B games. The Buf- falo Gals performed at halftime. The theme for this year's festivities was very appropriate, as the Bisons came through to the win the game against the Branson Pirates. Winning the game was a true Celebration . The victory dance was held Saturday with the band, Meramec per- forming. The Buffalo Art Club led by Mr. Glor also did a very fine job dec- orating the stage for the festivities. The FFA boys, FHA girls, rodeo guys, teachers and the Long Lane Outlaws played ball while on the backs of the donkeys—well at least they tried. The final out- come was the grand champions, which were the combined teams of FFA, teachers and the Long Lane Outlaws. This event was sponsored by the BHS chapter of FFA (Future Farmers of America). 88 89 1980 SEASON Breakdown... HAH! Br-r-ea-a-akdo-o-wn...H AH! This dialogue became a familiar routine with any guy on the foot- ball team. They had workouts 4 or 5 days a week for close to 2V2 months. The extremely hot weather of August and September made the practices seem worse than they really were. Still it was no easy task. There were several new faces this year, but probably the most obvious addition was the new head coach, Robert Burr. He and the team took to the road for the Bisons' season opener. Al- though the Eldon Mustangs came out the victors with a score of 14-6, the coaches felt that it was a game well played. We didn't win, but it became evident that the Bisons would do some scoring this season and could hold their own when they stuck to their guns. Our first game on home ground was against one of our toughest contenders, the Camdenton Lakers. One had to be realistic about the probable outcome of the game when you consider play- ing a squad with 200-lb. linemen and a team of 103 players. Again we lost, but again they showed their spirit. We weren't bowled over and scored a touchdown (TD)—something that hasn't hap- pened much when playing Cam- denton in the past few years. The game probably approached with the most trepidation was the one we hosted against the Ozark Tigers. They proved their strength with a halftime score of 35-0. Though the Bisons certainly didn't shine in the second half, something certainly happened as the Tigers made only one touch- down. We also gained recognition on the scoreboard in the last half. 3 Senior Players 92 IS 4 Our next slated guest was the Rogersville Wildcats. The excite- ment crackled in the air as our first TD of the game was made before even a minute had passed. As was predicted, we won the game, 20-7. The Bisons were looking hopefully for another victory, this time against the EIDorado Springs Bulldogs. Another win could've paved the road with the confi- dence needed to start a winning streak for the Bisons. It was quite a letdown when we lost, 0-21, but the coaches felf it was one of the best games yet this season. We went back on the road again to Marshfield the following Fri- day. Low spirits could attribute to the fact that the Bluejays beat us, 16-0. Even though the Willard Tigers beat us score-wise, we officially won the game due to forfeit. This put our record at 2-5, which was an improvement, even if a small one, over our records of the past 2 years. Our home game against the Re- public Tigers was one of the most important to students as it was our homecoming game. The extreme cold snap, however, kept many people a way. We were de- feated 0-14 with Republic's first TD coming early in the game. The following Friday proved to be Halloween. Good or bad, our game against the Bolivar Liber- ators was held the following Sat- urday afternoon. The Bisons were shut out, 42-15. In the last game of the season, we led the Branson Pirates 15-14 until the last minute of the game. They scored another TD and made the final score 21-15. H Asst. H Buffalo B-Ball Displays Teamwork In 1981 Season Thanks to Dr. James A. Naismith in 1891, the Bisons are able to ex- ercise and enjoy competition be- tween football and baseball sea- son. The sport of basketball, usually runs from late fall to early spring. Naismith invented basket- ball. Basketball is a team sport, a game where good teamwork is vital, and if you've been a spectator of the mighty Buffalo Bisons you would honestly agree that teamwork is their number one defense tactic. We all noticed a bright new face on the coaching staff of the '80- '81 basketball team, his name is Mr. Randy Radar. Mr. Radar is a tough idealistic type of coach whc has been quite an asset to the team. We hope the B.H.S. ball club does an even better job next year but it will be tough to match up to the efficient, outstanding basketball played this year. v Ai Coach Smith, Gary Dill, Norman Patterson, Rex Clinkenbeard, Greg Hicks, Bob Luttrell, Greg Wim- berly, Marty Hawkins, Coach Radar, Manager Todd Baldock, Doug Nimmo, Darin Henderson, Pat Blair, Dan Morgans, Greg Morris. The 1980-81 girls basketball season was a challenge for the coaches and players. The Buffalo High School girls had an average height of 5 foot 6 inch- es, but played against most opponents of 5 foot 6 inches and up! There were wins as well as losses; good times and hard times. There also were highlights in the 80-81 season-such as beating Kickapoo and Skyline, two long time ri- vals. Standing: Coach Cooper, Nancy Crowder, Shelly Hamlet, Connie Shewmaker, Gai Mills, Jane Roos, Vickie Sharp, and Coach Mills. Kneeling: Kimi Caswell, Becky Lane, Trish Mills. The practices were long and tough. The sprints seemed like miles, the hours as days but an all out effort was made by 15 determined girls and two coaches to win. The scoreboard did not always show a win, but as in- dividuals they won. They stood tall on their morals, their values, they obeyed the rules and regulations, and as well worked hours on end and en- joyed it!! Often we don't really think of teachers as being people. Oh, we do think of them in the capacity of breathing, walking and talking—but not in the human capacity (you know, being real people). Nevertheless, they are people. Our teachers were very special. They were with us throughout the school days of 1980-81, trying to pound bits of knowledge into our heads—sometimes the heads were “THICK HEADS,” FAT HEADS,” or “MEAT HEADS.” But most often they were “RECEPTIVE HEADS. We have a lot of great teachers that we should be thankful for, so hats off to our teachers. FACULTY PEOPLE IN ACTION Students tend to picture their teachers as the usual scream, holler, yell, and nit-pic type. However, in the following pictures, we see a different side of the faculty member. Some of these teachers were caught in an unexpected manner. What do you mean we have no winners? ToS 70 UA 7101 lOTZqSl Frank Colton Cox was born February, 10, 1962, in Doug- las Arizona, and passed away August 17, 1980 at St. John's Hospital from injuries he suffered in a two car acci- dent on August 11. Frank attended Buffalo Schools since 1973 and grad- uated with his fellow class- mates in May, 1980. Frank enjoyed playing the guitar and being with people. He leaves behind fond memories. Joan Boyd was born on May 23, 1927, and passed away August 11 as a result of in- juries suffered in a two car accident. She received her education in Rhode Island College in 1949 with a degree in secondary education. She then lived in Saudia Arabia to teach. She returned to the U.S. in 1963 and settled in Buffalo. Mrs. Boyd taught school in Buffalo for the last 16 years. She will be sadly missed by all her students and fellow faculty members that knew and loved her so much. Brad Osborne was born Au- gust 27, 1962 at Litchfield, Minnesota and passed away August 28, 1980. Brad attended Buffalo High until he was injured in a car wreck, March 12, 1980, and was hospitalized. He was a member of the 1980 gradu- ating class. Brad loved the outdoors. He loved helping others and his hobby was making others smile. Life to him was pre- cious. Due to their untimely deaths, these three are acknowledged in this year's publication. 146 t n ut,ry W I'iy« Atay. •iC atmy Afr ft mm a 4 4 ay tit ,m,y A, nay ly a ft, .J9¥ .f nrtyty f t W, « Aw w •+• AttJ. . l Aw t. r utu « A, 1 4 JMNM-N ' Z uu. . rj 00 ft., MMff Nf A Jt , Any rat . tutu tit ai ai a., at t a Atari . • truly c tttt a ww, tta Aott any ttytt W f a Alt,,tartt. i tau attrft . y .y t ‘i a furti tf may ttu Aiw A rtfu ■ VJ J tualr tZ ftt i r t. yt AttttyA Atnr tau . ■ i Jutu tut uu tu a tu ArtuyAt tat tut tturu t At tony 4 Jttflftt a tu irff ttt Atu Atfu. .fii .J ut A Au u ft tf tau ttu rata ■ r fu .t VJ y y 'fu t ttta atm a A A. y • • turtft , a tm t y !
