This year was a pretty busy year for student council. The beginning of the year brought new lights to the student parking lot. Our first dance this year was the Football Festival Dance on October 15, 1977; the band was Blade. Our next activity was held December 8, 1977 in the BHS fieldhouse during seventh hour. The activity . . . Slave Day, in which student council members were sold, raising $150. The main purpose of Slave Day was to raise money to buy fruit and flowers for the people at Chastain's and Harris Shelter. Following was our Christ- mas Dance, held on December 17, 1977, with the band. Rock Bottom. STUDENT BODY OFFICERS: Debbie Howard, President; Dale McHenry, Vice-President; Joy Bennett, Secretary-Treasurer. After the Christmas Dance came the Basketball Homecoming Dance with Pieces on February 4, 1978. It was Student Council’s idea this year to include a king in the homecoming festivities. This year we sent $100 for the Muscular Dystrophy Mara- thon Dance in Springfield. March 17, 1978 was Donate and Dictate Day. All high school classes had a contest between themselves in which students were asked to bring canned foods, clothes, etc., to help people in the area whose houses have burned, or who are in need of help. Playing for our Spring Dance this year was Better Daze. Our last activity was the annual student council trip. This year student coun- cil went to some place new . . . ST. We again broke attendance records this year and compiled a 7 to 3 overall record and tied for second in the Conference. The offense was probably our brightest spot this year as we had several very high scoring games and five players were among the leading scorers in the Conference. Coming from behind seemed to be our trademark, and the boys kept their cool and poise all year long against teams that were far bigger physically than the Bisons. We will be losing several three-year starters this year and must rebuild the entire offensive line. However, due to several factors including the explosive brand of ball we play; two all-confer- ence players returning; good team speed; improvement of our defense; and most of all being used to winning--we think our young men can rebuild and come back to have a good year in 1978! 81 5 Buffalo 25 Mt. At the beginning of January the Bison record was 6 wins and 5 losses. The Bisons had played a very tough schedule losing three times to Springfield schools. They could have folded, but instead they came back fighting with determination and hard work. As a result they won the COC with a record of 12 wins and 2 losses. Three teams had a record of 8 wins and 6 losses to tie for second place. The Bisons were very proud of their defensive average which was 49.6 points per game. wmms i' p 126 In one way or another, Mr. Jack Howard has been going to school almost all of his life. He was born August 27, 1944, and began his education at the Bannister School, a small rural elementary school. Next he attended Macks Creek, from which he graduated in 1961. He attended Southwest Baptist College for 2 years, and graduated from Southwest Missouri State University after another 2 years. In 1965 he stopped going to school as a student, and started going as a teacher. For 2 years he taught social studies and biology at Macks Creek High School, and coached the athletic teams as well. The next year he was principal at Macks Creek. In 1969 there was a different kind of school to attend, and Mr. Howard began 2 years of service in the army. After 9 months in Germany, he returned to SMSU to complete his masters degree, and obtained an education specialist’s degree at Warrens- burg. He was superintendent at Hermitage for 2 years, and in 1974 came to Buffalo to be assistant superintend- ent, and he claims he is still a student, learning every day. Representatives of the Annual Staff went to discuss the school and its goals with Mr. Howard. He told us he felt that our school system, including teachers, students, and administrators, have the best attitude he has seen any where. He feels this is because they are here for one reason and that is to take the students as far as they can, and help them reach their fullest potential. “The students at Buffalo High School are as well prepared as any- one,” Mr. Howard stated. ‘‘I don’t want them ever to be in second place. We have to do the best.” Mr. Howard wants all students to set their goals high. “Do not set your goals too low because everyone has the potential to do more. Students today are smarter than ever before and in the future they will be able to solve the problems that will face them. He feels the United States is the “Land Of Plenty , but to maintain a plentiful land we must respect each other and keep a good home life. We asked Mr. Howard about the future of the school. He told us the school will grow in buildings, classes, and teachers as the population of the school system grows. He feels that the extracurricular activities in our school system help our students learn cooperation and it will make them tougher persons in life. We asked Mr. Howard what his advice to the graduating Seniors of 1978 would be. He said that nobody owes you anything. All you deserve is what you make out of life. He feels everyone can do anything they want to do with their future as long as they set their minds to it. Mr. Howard likes to see people be self-sufficient rather than always getting something for nothing. Foremost in Mr. Howard’s advice to the Seniors of ’78 is, Be slow to con- demn and fast to forgive.” 127 ADMINISTRATORS John Dull Jr. High Principal and Athletic Director Fern Martin Long Lane Principal and 6th grade teacher Dale Passmore High School Principal Genelle Spoering Curriculum Director Pruitt Miller Elementary Principal Jeanne Price Jr. High Counselor Dan Bruffett Ass’t Superintendent Jim Andrews High School Counselor 129 FACULTY ’78 KkSt ■ Bryan Elhard Instrumental Music Janet Vickers Jr. High Math-French Jan Russell Art 130 Suzanne Powers Vocal Music Lonnie Glor High School Art HIGH SCHOOL Ruth Duncan Jr. High English Linda Gillispie English 131 FACULTY ’78 Kenneth Gaughran Social Studies Myra Glor Social Studies Joe Atteberry Social Studies 132 Joan Boyd Social Studies Sue Brewer Social Studies HIGH SCHOOL 1 Judy Kennedy Home Economics Crystal Henderson Jr. LaJohna Gillispie Jr. High Math Myra McMillan Math Marsha Schweider Math l FACULTY ’78 Rick Henderson Assistant Football Floyd Willis Basketball Debbie Cooper Girl’s P.E. and Varsity Sports HIGH SCHOOL Alan Stanley Chemistry-Jr. High Math Bud Bennett Biology Carolyn Passmore Debbie Leatherman Business Education Business Education 135 John Walsh Jr. High Science FACULTY ’78 k Keith Kendall Printing Photography George Blowers Industrial Arts Don Connely Broadcasting 136 Scott Bradley Industrial Arts Lendol Condren Driver’s Education HIGH SCHOOL Joy Harrison Librarian June Bradley Language Arts Jeannine Aderhold Jr. High English Dorothy Berry EMR [turn around to Say TO, • - rov .• • Twila Smith Learning Disabilities 137 138 VO-TECH FACULTY Bill Roberts Vocational Agriculture Helen Nimmo Secretary Bill Price Refrigeration Barbara Janzekovich Health Occupations Ramey Sample Vocational Director Frank Phillips Auto Mechanics Gene Coltrin Welding Vernon Frantz Carpentry Bill White Carpentry !• -wv Dave McHenry Auto Body Bert Booth Auto Mechanics Warren Scarbrough Carpentry Lloyd Rice Electronics D.A. And what a time it was, It was . . . A time of innocence, A time of confidences. Long ago ... it must be . . . I have a photograph. Preserve your memories; They're all that's left to you. Simon and Garfunkel 1978 BISON Reflection Staff: Janice Evans—Instructor Karen Hedgepath—Editor Teresa Lightwine—Business Manager and Editor Joy Bennett—Art Director Debbie Howard Frederica Smith Kim Walsh Mike Hall Dale McHenry Ron Jones Carolyn Hays Teresa Cline Cathy Hays Bobbie Applegate Debbie Austin David Zulkhe Camille Swanigan Cindy Jasper Beth Strickland Ruby Haney Trisha Kay The 1977-78 Bison annual staff has strived to reflect the year’s events as best they can, carrying the theme of reflections throughout the annual. We have tried not to center our ideas on any partic- ular activity or subject. We have all seen the year come and go, leaving us with memories of the good times and a few of the bad. But all in all by the end of the year we all know we've grown up just a little bit more than we would like to. As the Sen- iors say goodbye to the underclassmen, friends, and teachers we know that in years to come, we will reflect upon these days and cherish the memo- ries of 1977 78. As our Senior year, they were undoubtably the best times of our lives. Teresa Lightwine, Editor 176
