ST aaqaaboa bui39 • • • ... and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams... the Bible. showing conceRn 1973 was a year to look up and wonder... we wanted to make a name for ourselves and we did...on an old desk.. .we looked down and we made a name that would last... until day after tomorrow, maybe.. .we didn’t know there was a higher vision to be caught.. .that some- day we might dream dreams if we caught the vision now... our minds were dulled... almost as if ready to be discarded... and then our living rooms became a dumping ground... ecology was popular and ecologists were beginning to call it mind pollution.. .where were we going?.. .we stopped and wondered... the sweet innocence of a little child.. .noth- ing quite so precious... ours to mold and to make... we wondered... make into a reservoir for trash ?... into a passion to keep trying and a will to do right... and a way to know God... herein was our future joy and hope... herein we should plant the truth... herein would we be made free... and still we wondered... 17 a man without dreams is petty indeed and has but small will for living, loving, and enjoying life to the hilt, dreams drive nearly all of us to try to be one thing or another, each of us striving to attain greatness in whatever field we toil. Yet, even in the best of earthly things, there is always some flaw or detraction that mars the quality of it. Let us realize that each human is filled with the capacity for goodness, character, and wisdom; but each must be developed or fall short of its full potential. Left to seed by themselves, these qualities may start to bud only to be nipped in flower by the cold frostiness of society. Untrained and undeveloped, they decay and lapse into a limbo of uselessness; and the mind, left with no bounds or limits on its action, turns from a flower of intelligence to a weed. Charles gann diane jones 10. bob simmons debbie sweany 9. rick bursey nancy janke 8. mitch hale elizabeth patterson 7. brad dunham brenda hall 5. greg hall beth cantlon 4. donnie short shelly hamlet 3. troy bolin tammy me daniel 2. layne Wallace jackie rankin 1. david andrews michelle blue 6th grade candidates tommy roby dan a rankin grade 8 grade 2 grade 7 grade 1 21 CARniVAl Long Une CARmval theme the most highlighted social event this year was long lane's annual carnival, the fourth grade reigned on the throne with randy ragland as king and lacinda day as queen, proceeds purchased new classroom curtains, record players, and new basketball uniforms. cindy woody, the sophomore candidate, was crowned queen of the 1972 football festival friday night, October 27. in ceremonies conducted at the half of the game with republic, miss woody received the crown and a kiss from her escort, joey shewmaker. following the game, which the bisons won 38-0, there was a dance in the field house with music furnished by the rockets of Springfield, cindy's court from top to bottom are freshman candidate; lynn worley escorted by tom deason; junior candidate, laurie nyberg escorted by mike holman; and senior candidate, marsha andrews escorted by kim weitzel. 24 26 chRistmas paRaPe the 1972 Christmas parade was held on thanks- giving weekend for the first time, the parade, sponsored annually by the buffalo merchants, was not blessed by the elements, the day turned out to be cold and misty, miss beverly boyd was elected miss merry Christmas by the bhs students, her attendants were irene kinney, teresa boyd, and vickie smith. 27 BASketBALL homecoming, time fop Reunion on Saturday, february 17, nancy janke, a freshmen, was crowned homecoming queen, the coronation took place between the b and varsity games, she was escorted by jimmy dull, her attendants were: lori long, escorted by david hunt; debbie chapman, escorted by larry shockley; and linda church, escorted by joey shewmaker. lynndunham, retiring queen, was escorted by deryl Wilson. the alumni dinner, with mr. david wright as the guest speaker, was a great success. 28 fun ASsemBLies BReak monotony .......of every day school life, fun assem- blies are not all fun, but also informative, through fun assemblies we at buffalo high got a lesson in american poetry from john dillion and company, and a history of mis— souri's ozarks from mr. gilelmore. on top of this the obvious aspects of getting out of class for an hour brought pleasure to everyone I 30 B OOTH JAR Kl NQTOW'S 1 encnW Junior Class PlAY Produced by Special Arrangement With Samuel French of NewYork Grade School Aua8:00mNQV.i7,7 I _ ADU LTS |.00 STUDENTS .15 j([ left to right: cindy nelson, jim dull, Steve yarbrough, debbie mcdaniels, jim price, irene kinney, lu jean dill, donnie chapman, rick freeman, debbie chapman. finding yourself in a fantasy land, moving your toes in the sand casting yourself in a role of your own, wanting to be all alone, fantasies are where you feel you belong, who is to say that you're wrong? Bufpalo qaLs BRinq home tcophies right: officers below: head majorette tina mont- gomery and assistant majorette cheryl clayton the buffalo gals, a unique drum and bugle corps was organized in 1956. since 1957, they have won first place trophies in every competition they have entered, the gals have participated in several parades this past year including the ozark empire fair, the sedalia state fair, the buffalo Christmas parade, the rolla parade, the Springfield Christmas parade, the coffeeville, kansas Christmas parade, the ’’celebration of five flags over pensacola” in pensacola, florida, and at several bison football and basketball games, the officers for the gals this past year have been: president sheila cully vice-president lois ernster sec. tres. katy becket reporter cheryl hamlet student manager nancy janke the buffalo gals are directed by bryan d. elhard. 43 melodious mixed choRus the buffalo mixed chorus under the direction of miss wanda caby made appearances on local television and numerous presentations for the school. a variety of music included selections from handel's messiah and popular tunes such as the carpenter' rainy days and mondays. music is playing inside my head over and over and over again, my friend there's no end to the music. carole king 44 quality makes up the high school Band the high school band under the direction of mr. bryan elhard performed in many concerts this year, at home they played at all the games, presented a pop concert in may and played for the patriotic assembly, on the road they participated in the southwest missouri district music contest, and mid winter contest, six of the band members attended and participated in the southwest missouri district honors clinic, all in all it was a very active year. when i catch a common cold i want to hear a saxophone when i let the good times roll slide me a bass trombone. -james taylor 45 musicians speak with a univepsaL Language buffalo s musicians develop great skills under the leadership of mrs. fredda heady, elementary school band teacher; miss wanda caby, high school choral direc- tor; and mr. bryan elhard, high school band instructor, together these people comprise a well planned music department. upper right: 5th grade band upper left: jr. High choir lower right: 6th grade band lower left: jr. high band 46 the tough, young Bisons have successful ye R in fOOtBAll players are (left to right): Charlie gann, bert dunham, mike holman, tom deason, mike farrell, joey shewmaker. 48 above left: coach kennedy and assistant coach henderson. assistant coach Wilson is not pictured, lower left: bison all— conference selections, left: the entire 1972 varsity team including coaches, below: jack brownfield was the only player in the coc to be on both offensive and defensive all-conference teams. the buffalo bisons, under the coaching of warren kennedy, came off a dismal winless season in 1971 to compile a 3-6 record against some of the toughest competition in the state, the bisons finished in the thick of the conference title race with a 3-3 mark in what coach kennedy termed a '’rebuilding” year, the bisons had 5 starting seniors, including jack brownfield who gained 900 yards rushing and 500 yards in pass recep- tions. quarterback joe shewmaker passed for 1000 yards, buffalo looks forward to a fine season next year with a large number of returning players. 49 V and fpeshman teams finish 4-1-1 51 VARSity places the basketball bisons provided many an anxious moment during their regular season play and were dubbed the cardiac kids after the first few games they won by one or two points in the last few fer- vent seconds, they seemed to get hot then turn cold just as fast, even during the same game the bisons looked like a completely opposite ball team, usually they completely dominated the game for a while, then nothing, several games during the season stood out more than others, the republic game here at buffalo is an example: seconds left on the clock, bisons ahead by 1, republic’s ball; 3 seconds left, republic shoots a desperation 1 2 court shot; buzzer sounds, republic wins by 1 as a 47 foot shot goes through the hoop, homecoming was a night to remember, the bisons fought a tremendously fast-paced game that would tend to make one forget it was just a high school game, ozark was our unfortunate opponent, up until the last 4 or 5 seconds it was anyone’s game; then on a fluke technical foul with the score tied 55 to 55, the bisons shot 1 free throw making it 56 to 55 and victory, buffalo finished the season with an overall record of 13 wins, 10 losses and a coc record of 8 wins and 4 losses that put it in second place. bisons are: (top left to right) john henderson, jimmy dull, joey shewmaker, and david hunt; (middle left to right) deryl Wilson, larry shock- ley, larry brethower, and bobpolly; (bottom left to right) doug bradley and rick freeman, head coach is floyd willis and assistant coaches are rick henderson and dick wilson. 52 V and fpeshman teams show them aBility and give Buffalo a good outlook fop futuRe seasons this year the junior varsity, was made up of sophmores and freshmen, they had an overall record of 7-9, and a coc record of 5-7. this team finished strong by defeating marsh- field, and ozark in the last two games, their future looks good. junior varsity bisons are: (left to right) gaylen jones, jimmy blue, rick dismang, bob simmons, ron pence, roy medcalf, hollis henderson, terry green, david johnson, kenneth cooksey, steve davies, and coach rick henderson. 54 freshmen had a 7-6 overall record this year, their coc record was 4-2, after defeating marshfield, ozark, willard, and branson. freshmen bisons are: (back row left to right) dennis sutton, danny glor, kim davies, craig sample, joe ben shantz, doug brethower, tim brownfield, kirby bradley, coach willis. Life the yeaR -1973 looking Back the elder was a quiet sort of person; he didn't talk much, we called him the elder, because he was older than anyone else, or just for lack of anything else to call him. but tonight, he seemed to be full of talk, (perhaps it was the incense) and it was mostly about the old days, days when things were strange and different, in particular the year 1973, his last year in what they called high school... ’’that was the year of the terrible ice storm, he said with a glimmer beginning to show in his eye. all the adults became dismayed at the glimmer, for they knew what came next. there was ice everywhere, he continued, and the electricity was out for as much as a week in some places. of course, that's no longer possible since they changed the water. i heard someone near me say. but the elder simply didn't hear. Mwe switched principals in 1973, he said with a grin coming across his face, mr. dull for mr. kirk- sey, sort of like changing horses in midstream. little sister opened her mouth and said, ’’what's a... before she was escorted out of the room, (i still wonder if she would have said principal or horse?) the elder continued ignoring the unheard of out- burst. ’’and of course the vocational technical school in louisburg was opened in 1972. ” even the children were a little disturbed at this statement, he was evidently further along than we had thought, yes, we had a lot of fun at our new vo- tech school the people were now beginning to drift toward a feeling of restlessness, i thought it was odd for he had never before continued on one of his rages for this long, however, the children had become fascinated and the elder seemed to thrive on their enthusiasm. 85 that was the same year that we got our new football stadium, they called it an athletic field, he cackled, at this point, several more of the children had to be re- moved. the elder was obviously bringing out corrupt ideas in the minds of the young, but still he continued, do you know the best part about 1973? his voice reached a new high, and in it i heard a note i had never heard before and it made me feel strange, that was the year i graduated! and with that, he began to scream in hysterical laughter, he looked very strange- ly pale as they carried him out, and i felt a sadness pass as i watched the last per- son from 1973 pass from our midsts. dedication addRess- Bison athletic field tonight football comes of age here in buffalo. it's been a struggle, i imagine that when football first came to our area about a decade ago, it was a pretty mysterious thing to a lot of folks, and while the young men of dallas county were trying to learn the fine points of football, they lost a lot of games, it wasn’t until 1968 that buffalo football finally managed to produce a winning record, we had a fine year in 1969, losing only one game; and though we’ve slipped a bit since then, i think everybody knows that we’re on our way back, and this time we're coming back to stay. 86 here on this field tonight, and on so many like it all across america, the young men of our country will be playing a game that will teach them many valuable lessons about life, like life, football contains the ele- ments of pain and joy, of frustration and satisfaction, and of failure and success, football players learn that there is a price that must be paid for success, these boys began paying that price back in mid-august, in the hot, dry, dusty days of summer—days that may be a little hard for most of us to remember as the cold wind blows across the field tonight, but they remember, they remember the sweat stinging in their eyes, the cotton-mouthed thirst, the gasping for breath, the giving of just a little more when it seemed as though there was just no more to give, this, and so much more, you learn when you play football, and i suggest to you that this experience as a boy, makes for a better man later in life. let's just stop for a moment and consider why we have this fine new field. it's because our school admin- istrators, our school board members, and mostly because you — the people who support this school dis- trict — have had enough foresight to see the value of such a facility. it s the same reason we have the field house, our own radio station and printing shop, our excellent modern elementary school and the ex- citing new vo-tech school in louisburg. it's because, for a little town in the ozarks, buffalo is something kind of special. for a long time buffalo has been basketball country, and it will continue to be. but we're growing up. foot- ball has served its apprenticeship and is now ready to stand as an equal partner with basketball, i know dallas county sports fans will root for our football teams in the fall and our basketball teams in the winter, so let's make it buffalo basketball and buffalo football, equal partners from now on; because with the dedi- cation of this field, we are indeed saying to the world that buffalo football has come of age. and so tonight, for all the bisons — older bisons with their remembered dreams of glory — bisons of to- day who will proudly wear the black, white and red on this field tonight — the young bisons who wait im- patiently for their brief moment in the spotlight — transplanted bisons like myself who bring the special enthusiasm of the convert — yes, and even the generations of bisons yet unborn, who will run and play how do you say goodbye to something that you have loved, disagreed with, understood, honored, ridiculed, downgraded, and cherished all the same time? you never know really where you're going until you get there; you never know what's at the top of a tower until you reach its peak, just as the world looks different at the top of a tower, you look back once you've reached your goal and see everything different- ly than you saw it as you climbed up. we have reached the top of one of our towers; and looking back, we say, goodbye and thank you, buffalo high, for giving us what will pro- bably turn out to be the four best years of our lives. farewell, dear old bhs. may your halls continue to be blessed with such brilliant and inspiring young prodigies of the fu- ture as were the graduating class of 1973. good- bye to those selected few who believe that attend- ance at bhs is more important than the academic side of school... may you and your superior judge ment carry on and never fail, as long as it is fair and just to everyone concerned... you underclassmen probably don't understand attention! at ease, dismissed! that; you may not see it that way, because, like we said, you're still climbing. keep on towering, 172 jim price russell vogels Befope you stARt climBinq you’pe on the Bottom with no way to qo But up! this year iTm graduating from high school with- out sadness or misgivings, our elders say these years are the most fun, but time can on- ly prove if they were and if ifve learned any- thing worthwhile, graduation from high school is only the end of phase one, not my life, i haven't reached the top of the tower. i've on- ly started climbing, sure, i'm happy for the privilege, right, and, indeed, duty to get a basic education, but i'm also very glad to have finished this climb with no chance of returning, i'm graduating from high school this year, but surely my learning process has just begun, to continue for all my time, i have to take my place now on the back row in the school of life, i've almost finished the first school, the first phase of my life, time can only wonder if it has made me grow up or if it has just made me older. kirk lemons graduating is simply the closing of one door in life and the opening of a new one. probably something has been lost in days past, but much has been gained, behind the old door is left good friends, old love, good and bad times, and lessons well learned, behind the new door lies opportunity, new friends, responsibility, new love, may God be with us as we take this new step in life, and may He guide us as we search for happiness and peace of mind, surely it can be found at the top of a tower. junie anderson 173 you may get tipeO anO neeO a Little help on youp way up sitting in a noisy study hall feeling an occasional gust of springtime wind blowing through the open window, over my shoulder, and then to the heater that is stuck on. i want to get up and run off the school campus (and look at the sky and the clouds and all the things that make the world wonderful) without a pass. standing alone in an empty study hall hearing the echoes of yesterday drifting past closed windows, overturned chairs, and then to my memory that is stuck on. mark heady as an underclassman, i've watched a lot of other seniors graduate. i've seen some happy, some sad, but they all went on. where?... to different places to do different things, some came back, but some didn’t, think for a min- ute. how many faces can you remember from the class of ’70 without looking through your annual? well, now the class of '73 joins the ranks of alumni, and i suppose in three years, the seniors of '76 won't remember very many of us. how many '73 seniors will remember their own fellow classmen three years from now? it's like a parting of the way in friend- ships and other things, losing one just gains another; and so we move into the future, realiz- ing that we've yet much to gain. chris lee 174 But don’t stARt down Befope you Reach the highest point up! thoughts of a senior farewell bring confusion, attempts at tactfulness, and, finally, complete candor and truthfulness, why not admit it?
