BISON 197172 Coat of Arms Buffalo High School Buffalo, Missouri Volume XXIV “I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” OUR SCHOOLSONG To thee we sing our dear old Buffalo High All praise to thee our hearts and voices cry Oh golden days and hours of joy sublime, We owe to our dear school, old Buffalo. 2 In the stream of life one encounters a multitude of people, each different in his own way. You are one of these people, striving for identity and a place in society. In a way, each of you is a stream in himself. Each stream has its own particular color, depending on where it comes from, its temper, whether rough on top and calm underneath, or turbulent underneath and calm on the top. Under the stream there are often rocks and smaller pebbles. These stones represent the troubles and hardships one must undergo to have a meaning in life. One must go over these barriers instead of stopping when things seem impossible. When your stream goes out to join with the ocean, that is when you’ve passed from the security of your school and teachers. You must now join the large outside world with its beauties and exciting new phases of life. PEOPLE . . . Their faces blurred by the waves of heat drifting upward. Does heat come from bright fire consuming wood and paper, or docs it come from the bright fire within myself, the fire that is fed by my mind, my spirit, my emotions, my soul? Does this fire not distort images also? Things are sometimes changed from what they are to what 1 want them to be. In order to overcome the naivete caused by my idealism, I sometimes find myself believing the worst or the very best about all things. I encounter a fire burning within myself. 6 When the fire’s burned out and the Crowd’s all gone, what’s life? Shadow pictures and half-seen images of encounters in the past. Secret hidden whispers talk about yesterday. Half seen and half heard, you can feel them if you try. The people you knew but now know not are all there. Yesterday comes to life with the rustle of each page. Laughter rings out in the stillness, and you’re not alone anymore. With the turning of each page, the impressions grow brighter. You’re there in school, and the year is 1972. 9 PEOPLE PARTNERS 1922 1902 1952 No matter how hard we try to disguise the learning process in school with fun and good fellowship, it is still there. Most of us receive good erades for good work, but there are those who attain the highest marks. These people strive to maintain top grades as well as friend- ship Although achieving all A’s is an outstanding accomplishment, it is not the chief goal of our academic life; however, our aim is to find our maximum effort and then apply this to our studies as well as other encounters we may have. We are proud of all of our high achievers, regardless of grades, and would like to honor them be- cause they, too, deserve recognition. ALL A’S Joyce Covert, Sharon Mallard. Terry Cox. The fervor and frivolity of the athletic season cres- cendo with the annual Basketball Homecoming. The atmosphere is one of nostalgia for graduates return- ing to their alma mater; however, the players and nominees for the position of royalty feel only anti- cipation as all expect victory. 19 Encounters Impressions Penned by bison Poets Thinking Every man Has Itis thoughts. Thoughts that Cannot be destroyed By any force. Unique thoughts. Thoughts no one else Would ever think. And as a man thinketh So is his soul. -Karen Nimmo America the Ugly O beautiful? For smoggy skies For hunger’s sad refrain For littered mountain’s majesty, And also on its plain. America, America, God mend thine ugly flaws Within thy soul Find self control Peace, Liberty, and Love. -Diana Hyde Life was a tender, budding flower Life was a young tree greening Life was a golden grassy meadow Life is a clear, sparkling stream —Polluted. -Vicky Johnson 1972 HumanldcalisticHappy SearchingSecularLost BrightTHOUGHTSTender BlucNoblcOFI nspiring HopefulYOUTHCarefree GodlyPatientPeaceful RealisticSadRestless -Mrs. Beverly Evans 20 Hope When all seems hopeless Goodness is lost in Confusion Your love provides a beam of hope Shining Deep into the darkness of my mind. I follow it out Into the sun and warmth And back To Happiness. -Jody Mankind’s Dream Someday, all war and struggle will be gone, All bombs and rockets will be withdrawn. With dawn and peace upon man’s mind, Without war and hell, what would he find? Could it be, we would love and cherish each other. And every man you meet could be called a “brother”? Although this Utopian dream is not here, With hope in our minds, it will always be near. -Rob Hiles In Dire Need The seven chambers shone brightly. I sat in the lobby waiting for an answer. The man in the first chamber said, “Cry. .What have you got to be grateful for?’ The man in the second chamber said, “Laugh. There’s no need to cry about it. The man in the third chamber said, “Run. Everybody’s out to get you.” The man in the fourth chamber said, “Hide. Then nobody will find you.” The man in the fifth chamber said, “I have nothing to say to you.” The man in the sixth chamber said, “Eat, drink, and be merry; because tomorrow you’ll die.” The man in the seventh chamber said, “Die now, why wait?” Then I spoke, “Seven is my lucky number.” I left the lobby. -Mark Heady Looking with empty eyes Here where hate is I wonder How much war and hate We will survive. Walking backwards Down the road Of all the befores Searching For an answer To the endless question of. Why? We ask and wonder How it was before. Blind To the endless cycle Of shattered dreams I cry. -Karin Chapman 21 Senior Candidates Kimmy Holcomb Fred Clayton ls| Grade Candidates Lisa Chapman Danny Dryer 2nd Grade Candidates Crndy Hawkins Douglas Nimmo P.T.A. As tomorrow’s parents, teachers, and leaders, we have a great responsibility to do our best today; and we’re living up to it. We’re trying to solve today’s problems before they become tomorrow’s crises. Our motto might well be: “Live today to a better tomorrow.” 61 H. AUSTIN V. AUSTIN W. HOLT B. ABERCROMBIE T. AHART A. This year, to represent our 1972 yearbook, we, the Annual Staff, chose Karen Nimmo and Wayne Holt because of their special qualities. We feel that they best portray our ideals, honor, loyalty, citizenship, and scholarship. Their warm friendship has helped to make each day of the school year 1972, a good one. 137 Wayne Holt Karen Nimmo Quiet prevails once more and the ghosts of the people who en- countered the new ideas of their day slip out of the corners and closets to reminisce the hap- penings of nineteen seventy-two. New ghosts will join ranks of the years before and share their im- pressions of people and encounters for three short months. Then the ponderous machinery of educa- tion wheels into action. Even in these brief resting moments, the silence is broken by the sound of repairmen and their helpers patching up wounds re- ceived in the long arduous battle against ignorance and illiteracy. For some the battle has moved to farther fields in life; for others, fall brings a return to the fight. Sleep well, dear friend, until tomorrow. 138 139 In the First Chapter of the Book of Proverbs we read, “The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Someone has said, “Sad is the generation that stoned its prophets, but sadder still will be the day a generation has no prophets to stone.” I felt inclined to record the above in this issue of our yearbook and leave each the responsibility of his own interpretation. I commend this book to you and may I wish the fullest enjoyment of it to all. Sincerely Superintendent of Schools 142 Mrs. Swanigan Junior High Secretary A secretary is a composite of manual skill, mental alertness, and intelligence. Even with a whole system depending upon her efficiency, she still has to find the time to be courteous and friendly to the people with whom she comes in contact. A school secretary goes even beyond this. She is a combination second mother, guidance counselor, and adult supervisor. She can tell you what class your best friend is in second hour, lend you lunch money-just for today-and find paper clips, rubber bands, safety pins, and that stapler that your teacher sent you after. 143 Ray Bolin Bessie Caldwell Lendol Condren Ruth Dunkin Beverly Evans Fredda Heady Grace Hill Larry Hines Sandra Hines 144 Joe Atteberry Charles Bennett Dorothy Berry Joan Boyd June Bradley Leta Buchanan Lajohna Gillispie Merle Grant Chloe Gregg Avera Harriman I had a teacher yesterday Who taught my eye to read and hand to write. Robert Lee Wayne Lemons 147 Danny Thomas John Walsh Ethel Williams Floyd Willis OUR COOKS Busdrivers. . .PEOPLE. . .busdrivers are PEOPLE who turn the wheels of a bus which brings us to school and takes us home; but they, like teachers, turn the wheels, the mental wheels of young minds which someday will travel down the road of life. How well these PEOPLE follow the signs in the future, depends on how well they follow the signs along the way. So you see, Busdrivers are PEOPLE who not only turn the wheels of a four wheeled vehicle, but also turn the wheels of a young mind. 149 dedicate to two teachers who have devoted most of their lives to instructing young PEOPLE. In this day and age, with its emphasis on youth, we seldom give credit to the generation before us for all the valuable treasures they have given us. We would like to take this particular niche to express our hope that these two ladies have learned as much from the young PEOPLE they have encountered as have the students who have encountered them. These revered women have instituted such pillars of profundity as The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, the American Revolution, Julius Caesar, and the Bay of Pigs. We shall be forever indebted to these PEOPLE who not only have shown us the path to knowledge, but lighted our way with wisdom. We hope they continue to learn and grow in spirit with us the youth of today. 150 Compliments of HAROLD GODFREY INSURANCE AGENCY South Side of Square 345-2614 Buffalo Missouri 65622 BUFFALO REALTY Farms, Ranches, Homes Jim Abercrombie Office 345-2238 South Maple Residence 345-7187 Our business people hold a prominent place in our community. HILAJSD DAIRY Springfield, Missouri Congratulations to the Senior Class of 1972 171 172 173 In this world PEOPLE form a tie that binds. PEOPLE— tall, short, smiling, frowning, singing, working, happy, lonely, free— PEOPLE-------all different yet the same-----PEOPLE - brought together by the want of understanding and education----PEOPLE------- divided by individual personality. With the PEOPLE we’ve met here at B.H.S. we Seniors have formed ties that are bind- ing. This hall, with all its PEOPLE, is symbolic of our encounters—encounters with happiness, friendship, victory, sadness, and failure. Even though our encounters may be insig- nificant to some, they are a mountain to us. With every discovery, every word, and every smile--- we have captured an im- pression to hold forever for ourselves and, hope- fully, to leave forever at BH.S., an impression cre- ated by the Seniors of’72. 174 Yesterday, as it seems, 1 went From class to class. Trying to learn what was being taught, So that 1 might pass. Some classes 1 dreaded, some 1 didn’t. Some I liked just fine. But what I learned and what 1 felt Will be forever mine. Now thoughts of anguish and enduring joy Pass before my mind. In this lonely, once noisy hall, I stop to see What my mind can find... I’ve been a student at Buffalo for twelve years. I’ve made many friendships. Some have lasted and, unfortunately, some proved untrue. But that is life. I have been only one among the babbling crowd. The hall of life is filled with many PEOPLE who are all different yet in some ways so much alike. ... 175 I AM A PEOPLE! I must not ask “What does the world hold for me?” The world holds nothing for me. 1 must ask instead, “What do I hold for myself?” I must expect nothing from the world, but expect only the best from myself. I must not strive for material wealth and upper class status, but deal fairly with my fellow man, my conscience, and my God. I must not try to determine my best by others’ words and deeds. I must be myself. 1 must not succumb to the ease of becoming a stereotype and drifting along with the current. It seems like just yesterday when we started to school, and now we’re all Seniors. We’re all a little happy and a little sad. We know now that we could have tried a little harder, and we see where we should’ve done more. Wc can’t, however, linger in the past ; we must go on into the future. We go knowing what we have done and thinking of what we will do. As Seniors we now gaze upon horizons that once seemed far away. Wc now leave this training ground to you, the underclass- men, hoping that you may be successful in all your encounters here at B.H.S. We hope you will learn you lessons well and learn to gaze upon horizons that will lead your life in a way that will be beneficial to mankind. Our farewell message to you isn’t going to be a sad goodbye but this piece of advice: Always do your best and make each mo- ment count for something. Live today like you want tomorrow to be. Look upward to the horizon of peace and to your God. P P BCHEL YEARBOOKS. INC P O Bom 36. Msrce m .
