1970 The Bison 1971 Contents Student Life ................................... 1 Life's a bridge to eternity, A pause before infinity, And each who treads this noble span Fulfills God's wondrous, absolute plan. Each plank's a stepping stone of life Only trod once in joy or strife. Step lightly, child, step carefully, youth, Step the stone planks with vigor and truth. Life is a gift and must be cherished as priceless. Life is made up of the present, past, and future. We're sure of the past and of the present, but are we just as sure of the future? All the experiences of living a full rich life will depend on what we have done in the past, what we are doing in the present, and what we resolve to do in the future. As youth we are just beginning to live. We look to the future! Youth, almost by nature it seems, is idealistic. We believe in God, love, truth, peace, and friendship. We know instinctively that to love is better than to hate, that peace should replace war, and that flowers should grow where mankind is busy building. “They paved paradise and put up a parking lot. Most people knew this at some time of their life, probably in their youth, but somewhere along the line their dreams faded, their ideas grew stale, and they lost their joy of living. It is our job to awaken this world and get on with the business of living life as we know it should be lived. We believe that life should be lived a step at a time—that life is a series of stepping stones making a bridge which leads to a future be- yond our earthly comprehension. The very first part of life can be likened to the springtime when we experience new birth and a new beginning. One of the very first stepping stones is learning to walk. We've only just begun to live; so much of life ahead; we start out walking and learn to run. Youth is like the summertime of life. We've left the springtime and now we're beginning to learn what life is all about. We're learning not only through the eyes of our parents but through the eyes of our teachers. As we think of life, we can see that the step- ping stones symbolize many things—education, ca- reers, marriage, and finally death. The memories held in this book represent one of the most important stepping stones in your life. These memories are fond ones to most of us, although some are blended with sadness. As you sit in a quiet corner and read this book, it is our wish that you will relive the events and see again the persons and places that were meaningful to you. May this Bison Annual remind you of another step- ping stone of your life as you follow through the pages of 1970 and 71's triumphs. May it also remind you of what is yet to be done with your life—a stepping stone still to be reached! For those of you who have not graduated, your high school education may now be your big stepping stones. i Never one thing and seldom one person can make for a success. It takes a success of them merging into one perfect whole. Marie Dressier 2 An old man going a lone highway. Came at the evening, cold and gray. To a chasm vast and deep and wide Through which was flowing a sullen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim; The sullen stream had no fear for him; But he turned when safe on the other side And built a bridge to span the tide. Old man, said a fellow pilgrim near, You are wasting your strength with building here; Your journey will end with the close of day. You never again will pass this way; You've crossed the chasm, deep and wide. Why build you this bridge at even tide? The builder lifted his old gray head. Good friend, in the path I've come, he said, There followeth after me today, A youth, whose feet must pass this way; This chasm that has been as naught to me. To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be; He too, must cross in the twilight dim- Good friend. I'm building this bridge for him. The one exculsive sign of a thorough knowledge is the power of teaching. Aristotle Instruction in things moral is most necessary to the making of the highest type of citizenship. Theodore Roosevelt 8 9 THE SHADOW I see a shadow creeping. Softly, silently, swiftly. It slithers along the wall. Softly, silently, swiftly. It slides around the corner. Softly, silently, swiftly. It's coming along behind me. Softly, silently, swiftly. It found me. . .. Softly, silently, swiftly. Andrea Anderson Today it is bare. But high its head. How many years now. Before it's dead? For the Bisons — It was a Very Good Year! 58 IN MEMORIAM Dale Richard Swanigan June 12, 1953 - June 14, 1970 The loss of a friend, classmate, and student is always a very shocking experience in a school. Tragic though death is, especially when it comes to one so young, it can also serve as an inspiration to everyone at Buffalo. The memory of Dale's friendship, to the many that knew him, will be everlasting. His faith and spirit were overwhelming and unforgettable. A person like Dale is never forgotten and the memory of him always held dear and deep in one's heart. Dale had always been very active in church and school affairs. He participated in athletics and was on the Varsity basketball team. He was a member of the Windyville 4-H Club for 8 years, and 1969 represented Dallas County at a Citizenship Short Course in Washington, D.C. One Biblical passage states; He being made perfect in a short time, fulfilled a long time; for His Soul pleased the Lord. That passage might be paraphrased to say that one isn't judged simply by the number of years he lives, but rather, and more importantly, by the quality of his behavior dur- ing these years. If someone asked us that, we'd say in return, There are a lot of things in school. Everyday one learns something, whether it's how to prove a geometrical theorem or find out that George Washington is the Father of our country. I n school we meet friends that we'll know and love until we die. We get guidance and counsel from the teachers who give so much for so little. We learn more than the things that come from books. We learn responsibility, respect, and a sense of values. School may be the biggest stepping stone of a person's life! School prepares one for the falltime of life when the knowledge from school is put to use. Sometimes the problems of life appear as high as a mountain, so high that one would have to have one's head in the clouds to see the never ending horizons. Sometimes one finds himself walking down a little path all alone. That's how it is, isn't it? Either you make it by yourself...or you don't. This is the time of life when one starts to learn by experience. He learns as he lives. 81 The wide world is all before us. For seniors graduation is a stepping stone of magni- tude and importance. It marks their entrance into this world of practical living -the falltime of life. If a stu- dent has got a sure footing and has obtained a sense of balance, he will not drown in apathy or despair. He will be ready to step into the future with understand- ing and insight. Earlier this year one Buffalo Senior took an introspective look at himself in regard to the future. One bright, crisp, fall afternoon as I thoughtfully walked down a slightly forested pathway, I began wondering about my life. Gazing skyward, I fixed my eyes upon the few brown leaves strewn upon the sea- sonal trees. Since I was completing my high school education, I was approaching the falltime of life. I placed my life upon one of these trees. This is my life thought I, ending as I come to the close of my school years. Probably never again will I see all my friends whom I have made at school. As I continued my slow pace in a slightly sorrowful state of mind, I approached a stream. This was not an ordinary stream. There was something about the cool afternoon and glittering of the sun upon the shimmering stream that affected me inwardly and seemingly cheered up my previous sorrow. Even the trees with their bare branches spreading out across the beautiful blue flowing stream didn't appear to be dead but alive and happy. Searching for a crossing of this stream, I sighted stones which had been accurately placed for a bridge crossing, although they were not placed by a human hand. I carefully examined each stone so as to remain longer at this blessed stream, but I knew I must press on. Traveling on and glancing back oc- casionally, I finally reached my destination. Regarding my shoes before entering my warm home, I noticed some mud had clung to one of my soles. At the sight of that mud, my whole inward being was enlightened and I knew from where it came. Now I realized that it was at this place, this beautiful stream that I had gained a new outlook on life. These stones were the stepping stones of life. Each stone was a help to me and altogether they made a bridge. They were my life! I saw that my life was not ending but just beginning as I was about to take future steps into the world. When we Seniors walk along the halls of B.H.S. for the last time as students, we hope that our steps and your steps on the bridge of life will never go astray but will always be guided by the Great Protector. 82 Underclassmen Officers President ..........................................Joyce Covert Vice President..................................... I am doing that again under the Title or Heading: Cycle of a Society, State, or Nation 1. From bondage to spiritual faith. 2. From spiritual faith to courage. 3. From courage to liberty. 4. From liberty to abundance. 5. From abundance to selfishness. 6. From selfishness to complacency. 7. From complacency to apathy. 8. From apathy to dependency. 9. From dependency back into bondage. The author of the above is unknown to me. As I reflect on history I am inclined to ask myself, Is it true? If it is true or partly true, than again I ask, 'What step is America on?' Congratulations to the Annual Staff on the production of this book, and my wish to all is full enjoyment of it. Sincerely, Superintendent of Schools 140 SCHOOL BOARD (Pictured clockwise from left) Dr. Charles Moore, and Messrs. D. A. Mallory, Bill Nunn, Richard Petree. Murrei Indermuehle. Ray Bennett.
