t The BISON Published by The Student cBuffalo High School BUFFALO. MISSOURI Courtesy Armour Co. Co-operation Wins We are not dedicating this book to these calyes nor the pail nor the milk. We are merely using the illistration to show the thing that has made our school the kind that we as students are proud to have the opportunity to attend. A community cannot become the proud owners of a school like ours and achieve the things ours has achieved until its citizens have made the intelligent cecision that these calves made and pull toward a common interest and common cause. We, the Student Council of the Buffalo High School, as represen- tatives of the student bo'dy want to express the gratitude of that student body for the opportunities afforded us. So it is to that spirit of co-operation, of working together, of individual sacrifice toward a common cause on the part of every citizen of this community that we dedicate this the 1949-50 Bison. May that spirit ever' prevail in this community for the sake of those to follow after us. THE STUDENT COUNCIL BoundV Education 0. A. Griffin Treasure Hadley Thomas President J. W. Peters Vice-President Ward Rea Member J. P. Hawkins Member Fay Coffman Member Floyd Reser Retiring Member Keith Kendall Retiring Member DILLARD A. MALLORY SUPERINTENDENT Our schools must truly meet the needs of all the children of all the people. The school must not only contribute to the mental and physical development of our youth but it must carry its responsibility toward the ethical, moral and spiritual growth and development. May I congratulate the members of this community for the fine co-operative education program you are providing. Your expanded curriculum, your recent building additions, your athletic field etc., and your whole-hearted community co-operation deserve much praise. That thing is not possible without the splendid co- operation you give others. Therefore I think the Student Council acted wisely in making the unusual dedication you read on the preceeding page. The stu- dents, community organizations, and all citizens deserve that commendation. It is my hope that that spirit of oneness in effort will continue until this school is offering its maximum in service in this community. It is my desire to offer my small bit toward that goal. That word would be Successful . The Softball teams of the High School were the first to engage iri practice and interschool competition. Both the boy's and girl's teams were undefeated in their regular schedule and both teams won first places in the Buffalo Invitational tour- naments. As soon as the softball games were over, and chilly weather began to move in, our attention was turned to basketball. The Bisons were faced with the toughest schedule that a Bison team had played in some time. We realized we had a big job to do and some 20 eager boys worked hard to bring in the victories. The A squad won the Buffalo Invitational Tournament, the Gold Division of the Greenwood Invitational Tournament, qualified for the Tournament of Champions and won third place, won second place in the Class A regional, and finished the season with a 2f won, 6 lost record. The B squad, composed of 12 boys, were undefeated during the season play in competition with other B squads. This group of boys will furnish • the players for next year'stvarsity team. To summarize the won-lost record of the entire squad, the total would be forty-eight games won and six lost. The volleyball girl's team won 8 games and lost 5 during the season. They captured third place in their own invitational tournament. The Junior High boy's team won 5 and lost 5. These boys were especially cooperative and showed more improvement during the season than any other squad. I want to take this opportunity to express my deepest appreciation for the cooperation and courtesy that each member of our athletic teams has shown me, and to their fellow members on the team. I want to congratulate them for their courtesy and sportsmanship to their opponents. It's always a pleasure to coach groups that possess your characteristics. By Eddie Matthews, Coach P. S. A summary of the baseball season cannot be given at this writing, although Bisons 9, Bulldogs 5, Bisons 5, Marshfield 4. Rex Shewmaker, Bill Pitts, Gene Hyde, Warren Hooks, Leland Bradley, Gale Owens, John Hal Alford, Coach Eddie Matthews and Manager Larry McGown First Row: Jimmy Bradley, Philip Legan, Bob Gann, John Owens, Arthur Lee Mallory, Bill Chapman. Second Row: Coach Eddie Matthews, Ben Shantz, Jack Hyde, Mark Day, Charles Peterson, Bryce Bradley, Paul Dean Bradley, Manager Larry McGown. The girls softball team under the leadership of Coach Matthews enjoyed an undefeated season, winning first place in the Buffalo tournament. Coach Matthews had twenty girls who went out for volleyball and enjoyed numerous games throughout the season, taking third place in the Buffalo tournament. JUNIOR HIGH SENIOR HIGH CHEERLEADERS Linda Lu Neill, Kathryn Mallory, Sherry Shewmaker, Jane Shewmaker, Theresa Peters, This year has been a year of growth for the music depart- ment.. .growth in quality as well as in number. We have seen music come a long way toward being a thing for everyone instead of the chosen few. Some 300 students took part in the music curriculum: Girls Glee Club 60 Male Chorus 12 Mixed Chorus 30 Beginning Strings 18 Orchestra 25 Advanced Band 43 Junior Band 10 Other Beginners 12 Theory 7 Grade School Music 120 plus several ensembles and soloists. Through the assistance of the other departments, a 75 voice chorus was able to present a very successful Christmas program. Another progressive event was the Music Festival, the first of its kind in Buffalo. Six bands, 3 orchestras, 16 choruses and glee clubs, and 111 ensembles and soloists from 12 schools participated in this event. Buffalo had 24 entries in the Sub-District contest at Lebanon and received 14 First ratings. Cf those entries, 5 took rirsts' at the District and 3 went to the State Festival. A_great unseen part of the music program has been the extensive participation of students in furnishing special music for churches, clubs, lodges, and other organizations throughout the year.
