Activity began early October 24, when signs demanding victory appeared, tons of confetti were cut, and tickets for the game were sold. In the afternoon, a pep rally—consisting of cheering, a snake dance, and music by the band-was held. At the game that night, a large crowd, which included many alumni, enjoyed the half-time entertainment provided by the combined Bison and Reserve Bands and the majorettes. The Homecoming Court came onto the field as the band played “Try to Remember,” and senior Suzanne Sydnor was crowned queen by Mr. Morris, principal. The Skip Shifflett Award was presented to an outstanding sophomore player, Hunter Crosby. The fans cheered the mighty Bison on to a 22-16 win over Riverheads, and the following night Bison enthusiasts celebrated with a victory dance. 64 VICTORY, FESTIVITIES 66 SKIP SHIFFLETT AWARD. The Skip Shifflett Award is presented annually at the homecoming game to an outstanding sophomore varsity football player. This award is a memorial to Carl Vernon (Skip) Shifflett II, who died April 7,1968. Skip, a member of the Class of 1970, was quarterback on the Bison Varsity team. This year the award was presented to Hunter Crosby, quarterback for the Bison, by Mr. Carl V. Shifflett. 67 JUNIOR - FACULTY GAME Playing to a capacity crowd, the Jolly Juniors bravely faced the Fighting Faculty in a duel on the basketball court. The faculty’s entertaining cheerleaders, Mrs. Lucille Salatin, Mrs. Christine Ontiveros, Mrs. Becky Williams, Mrs. Lois Home, and Mrs. Rachel Tiller, pro¬ vided plenty of noise and action to boost their scrawny team. Leading the cheers for the challenging juniors were Debbie Shifflett, Carolyn Combs, Jeanette Wilson, and Karen Ashby. Using a surprise attack in the final minute of the game, the juniors swamped the floor with their defensive team. Biased referees, in¬ accurate timekeepers, and an overly informa¬ tive announcer contributed to the hilarity and resulted in a complete state of confusion as to the final score. John G. Gum, D.D.S. Churchville, Va. Churchville Hardware Churchville, Va. 68 TONY FONTAINE CONCERT Students flocked around singing celebrity Tony Fontaine after he had awed his audience at the Gap with his charm and musical ability. The kids didn’t seem to mind cutting part of sixth period for the chance to get an autograph from the star who had made such a dramatic fight to overcome the injuries which threatened his life in earlier years. Tony Fontaine’s talent and his determination served as an inspiration for those students who heard the performer’s presentation during assembly. ALDERSON - BROADDUS BRASS CHOIR The twelve member Brass Ensemble from West Virginia’s Alderson-Broaddus College brought variety to the year’s school assembly series with a program of classical selections. The group came to Swoope in November as guests of the Bison Band who had invited the ensemble to participate in the Bison Band’s Fall Concert. 69 SCHOOL SPIRIT SOARS John Fairburn and Sharon Reeves, representing the Buffalo Gap student body, accept the WAFC School Spirit Award from Bill Harouff. Goodson Music Center Everything for the Musician Staunton, Va. 886-5282 RECEIVES AWARDS X - -T -Nv. ij mj jBf$ Three mighty Buffalo received the highest individual honor possible in District 5 when they were voted to the conference’s all-tournament team following the tourney action at the VMI Fieldhouse. Named to the all-league second squad was powerful sophomore Ronnie Young, playing his first season of varsity basketball for the Gap team. Young, seated second from the left, was awarded the honor on the strength of his consistent play under the boards on offense and defense. The burly Gap rebounder and scorer proved nearly unstoppable when determined to complete his basketball assignments on the court. Senior Robert “Horse” Michael placed second in the voting for all-tournament first team members. Michael’s 24 tournament points and effective inside defensive maneuvers won him the tourney recognition. Michael, standing third from the left, typified the spirit and stamina of the entire Bison team in the 69-70 season by his dedication and devotion to playing good basketball. Working under Coach Lilly for the first time, Robert assumed a key role in the building of Buffalo Gap’s basketball dynasty. Also named to the select first team was junior Tony Fox, a continual starter in the line-up of the regular season champs. Fox’s outstanding performances against Rockbridge and Natural Bridge in the tourney won him the respect of the opposition, the fans, and the tournament team voters. The individual honors won by the Gap players brought additional recognition to the glories of the 1969-1970 Buffalo Gap Bison. W. The Varsity Cheerleaders began the new school term with a new advisor, Mr. Thomas Park, and a different philosophy. Cold Triday nights, hot dogs with mustard, and sometimes uncooperative weather set the atmosphere for a challenging job. With basketball season came advisor, Mrs. Joyce Moody, and two additional cheerleaders. Hard working fans, cooperative coaches, and a promising team boosted the cheerleaders’ efforts in raising the school spirit to an all time high. The J.V. Cheerleaders, guided by their returning sponsor, Miss Jane Hammond, had a most rewarding year. Not only did they boost our Baby Bison but they raised spjrit for the varsity game. Bison are great! Lynn Shiflet, Sec; Nora Morris, Treas. Student leaders took a new and integral part in planning and accomplishing the activities and involvments of the 1969-1970 National Honor Society. The NHS members provided an example and an incentive for their fellow students at the Gap. The qualifications for membership in the exclusive club are scholarship, leadership, character, and service. By excelling in scholastic efforts, leading their classes and clubs, showing superb character, and serving Buffalo Gap, a group of students earn the honor of becoming members of one of Buffalo Gap’s most involved and active organizations. The NHS held two notable assemblies for the purpose of selecting new members. Gifts were given to the school from the National Honor Society with funds acquired through well-planned fund raising endeavors. .mur 1 ENCYCLOPEDIAS 1 Lucy Vaught, Karen Ashby, Linda Frank, Sandy Wood, Nancy Youell. A new chapter of the Future Teachers of America was formed at Buffalo Gap High School in the fall of the 1969-70 school year. Interest by a large number of prospective teachers brought forth many accomplishments for a successful First year. The future teachers carried out a variety of activities during National Education Week. The club’s other projects for the year included sponsoring a dance in honor of the Bison basketball team, giving a tea for the evaluation committee, and presenting an assembly program. The club received a National Charter and took its place among the active organizations at Buffalo Gap High School. 94 Treas., Mark Cline; Rec. Students experienced the thrills of on stage performance as well as the satisfaction of techni¬ cal theatre work. Costumers, make-up specialists, lighting crews, and stage managers handled all technical problems, thus enabling director, Thomas Park, to concentrate his efforts entirely on his enthusiastic company of actors. In addition to the major three act and one act plays, Masque and Blade began a series of discussions, seminars, and lectures in order to gain further knowledge and skills in theater practice. The year proved to be both engaging and beneficial for the students and for the school. Working diligently in sacrificed hours, the staff of the Golden Bison collected and published those experiences to be shared with all who wished to accept the fading reflections. Special tribute was paid to the Seniors, the Class of 1970, so that they might retain some fragment of their hours, their triumphs, their disappointments, and their involvements which marked the short period of time they spent sharing the pleasures and the sorrows of Buffalo Gap. Solicitations; brain storming sessions; lay outs; copy; photographs, deadlines. Seniors Lynn Shiflet and Beverley Kesner, who edited the 1969-1970 GOLDEN BISON, endured the pains of the enterprise known as preparing a yearbook for publication. A staff of ambitious workers was always prompt to assume duties essential to the printing of an annual, and made the endeavor possible by their efforts and interest. More students than ever were to purchase the finished product, and the staff pledged to offer one of the best annuals ever distributed to the students at the Gap.
