N.. ,. ., ,, ' 1sTo12Y i Q n a bleak and dreary September morn the halls of education CBuffalo Center Consolidated school! were invaded by twenty-eight bright and shining faces. Sixteen of the orginal first grade members have kept a special theme song in mind, 'keep Smiling', for they are now part of the graduating class of '5l. Now to account for the other twenty-one students graduating. The name of the teacher will be with the number of additions. The first grade teacher was Miss Blatt- spieler, second grade--Miss Nugent, additions-twog third grade--Miss Kiuper, additions-one: fourth grade--Miss Cran: fifth grade--Miss Hillsten. additions- three: sixth grade--Miss Kenyon, additions-two. Additions 1n seventh-three: eighth-one, nineth-eighteen, tenth-four. with twenty-s1x subtractions tn1s gives us the grand total of thirty-seven. As we look over the years we see the 'green' freshman starting one October evening on a hayride. I ch to our distress, the rack became unfastened from the tractor, leaving us slightly hysterical. After we captured the run away tractor we proceeded serenely Kwe thought! on our way. No one knows exactly what or how the rack became unsafe and tipped. A few of us were injured slightly and limped around school a few days. We put our aches and pains to good use if we could wiggle out of some work. During our sophomore year we had a Halloween Party at the school cafeteria. Coach Gregor was one of our sponsors. When the food committee cleaned up, a gang of future track men let out the air from the Coach's tires. Need we ex- plain why we called them future track men????? After making countless roses we Cas Juniors? deviated from the former prac- tice by having the Junior-Senior Banquet at the Forester Hotel in Forest City. After arranging the entire homec ming ourselves, we, the seniors, felt that there was a definite need for a more democratic way of doing such things. The result of all this was the formation of a Student Council. As future grads' we say, 'good luck, kids'. le are pleased to see that the seniors have taken an active interest in Band Boys' Chorus, Girls' Glee Club as well as sports. Our class as a whole is very much interested in the musical activities. The class gift is S200 toward the new Choir Gowns. EERHQR SKIP DAX 1 Bright and early on Friday morning April 20, thirty-three eager seniors, Mr. and Irs. Larson, and lr. Gregor took off in a big Jefferson Bus for the city of Minneapolis, which we reached about 11:30 a.m. Places visited dur1ngthe.noon hour were: Radio City Chapel CWCCOD, Dayton's, loolworth's Dime Store, etc. After much confusion we finally started our sight- seeing tour about 2:00. Some of the places we saw and visited were: The Uni- versity of Minnesota, Northwestern Airport where we saw a big transport plane and a Jet take off, St. Thomas College, Ford Plant, the barge that had struck the dam, and also some of the flood area. Last we went over to St. Paul where we went through the Btate Capitol. As we came into the capitol we saw Paul Bun- yan, Cs statue of himb. We arrived back at Minneapolis around 4:30. We went back to the Forum Caf- eteria and ate supper. Many went to a show,' and some to the Foshay Tower. We met atthe Greyhound bus station again and went out to see the Ice Follies. They really put on a wonderful performance. k1AJ.g..,in all, we believet e Seniors of '51 have had a very successful and legal S P 0 J ,1 , Y. N1oR ACTIVIUKEE The Junior class started the year with thirty-nine members--sixteen girls and twenty-three boys. Duane Horton dropped last fall and Donald Risius moved away this spring. The Junior class met at the beginning of the school year to elect the following officers: President. . . . . . . . Buelah Folkerts Vice-President . . . Larry Steinberg Secretary. . . . . . . . Elsie Drake Treasurer. . . . . . . . Violet Davids Delores Potter is our cheerleader and Miss Hullmd Miss Holtan are our s onsors. P The junior class has nine boys out forfbotball, ten for basketball, five for baseball and twelve for track so we were well represented. For the musical talent we have eleven girls in Girls' Glee Club and nine boys in Boys' Chorus. Besides this we have girls in the trio and sextet. Last fall for homecoming our float won first prize. Of course we were all proud of this, especially because we beat the Mighty Seniors. The theme was 'Victory.' Our candidate for homecoming queen was Carmen Stowe. She was also our candidate for the 1950 Carnival Queen. A cast of ten presented the Junior Class Play on November 10, 1950. It was 'The Tangled Yarn.! Ho Picture--Lila VanGerpen Sophomore Activities The sophmore class is composed of forty-six students: twenty-five girls and twenty-one boys. At the beginning of the year the class elected the following as officers: President . . . . . . . .Jerry Becker Vice-President. . . . . .Darrell Albers Secretary . . . . . . . .Phillip Orthel Treasurer . . . . . . . .Bob Speicher le also elected Donna Heitland md Lila VanGerpen as cheerleaders, and Mr. Taylor and Miss Kirchman as sponsors. The sophmores were well-represented in all extra-curricular activities. We had seventeen girls in the Girls' Glee Club, six boys in the Boys' Chorus and eleven in the band. The sophmore boys were naturally attracted to basketball, football, baseball, track and girls ----- -oops, that wasn't supposed to get in there. We had quite a collection of boys out for football--ten in all. As the football season ended basketball took over the spotlight. The season ended with six sophmores still pursuing the 'ball and hoop' game. Track season started with a lot of sore mus- cles and backs which Coach Tailor says will eventually end. Track brought nine sophnore boys to the gym in eir sweat clothes. Then, too, there is baseball, which accountaibr six more sophmores with sore hands and arms. That about rounds out sports as far as the sophmores are concerned. The class elected Janice Feldick as candidate for homecoming queen at the homecoming activities last fall. Our float was a large football field decorated in purple and white for Buffalo Center and black and gold for Britt. In the mid- dle was a large kettle representing Eagle stew. The class elected Joan Brue as candidate for the 1950 Carnival Queen. 1-an , -4 E , H Hi' Z' '2i.. .-.- .l 'l 'im'sinn..... .:uuu.1nmf-.... First-Prize Float A large crowd of B. C. H. S. alumni joined with the present school pupils and faculty in celebrating the annual Bison Homecoming on Friday, October 27. The Seniors planned a busy day for everyone, which opened with a mammoth pep meeting at 2:00 p.m. in the High School Auditorium. The highlights of this were the pep talks given by Superintendent Larson, Coach Gregor and Dr. Feldick. Then winding out of the schoolhouse a Snake Dance was organized at the front of the schoolhouse. Being led by the cheerleaders, the Snake Dance wound its coils throughout and around the whole community. The football squad was driven to the main intersection, where they were honored by the dancers 'h0 Spiraled around them and gave some yells. Going out to the football field at 3:15, a torch Cor perhaps a cigarette lighter! was applied to the bonfire. Around the big blaze songs, cheers, and pep were the order of the afternoon. Coach Gregor gave an inspiring speech, which ended the program for the afternoon. At 7:30 the parade of floats spearheaded by our marching band, paraded to the athletic field. Here the Bison met the alert Eagles of Britt's gridiron-eleven in a mighty struggle. At halftime the floats were driven around the field and were judged and awarded by Mr. Langhus and Mr. Beaving. Then came the highlight of the day, when the band led the way on to the field and was followed by our four queen candidates: Myrna Kiewiet, Carmen Stowe, Janice Feldick, and Shirley Hauskins. The honored member of the football team that night was Bob Burger who placed the crown on our Homecoming Queen of 1950, Miss Shirley Hauskins. Following the game Mrs. Olson and her helpers served a Goodfwill Lunch in the school cafeteria for the teams and cheerleaders of both schools, the Buffalo Center band, the faculty, the Homecoming Queen and her attendants and the Senior class members. ......,.. ,... Fall Carnival 9 l 53 2 , ' Q w e ' L.: X XLS ' x On November 18, 1950, it appeared to be a busy day throughoutthe school building with the high school and the faculty members hurrying around to get prepared for the first attempt of an All-School Carnival. Finally after a hard days work these were the results: Downstairs the cafeteria was decorated tothe theme of HThe Gypsy Tea Room' and the girls were serv- ing lunches to the large crowd which came that night. Over in the ath- letic room the results were not as tasty as those in the cafeteria, for this was the NTomb of Terror.H Having viewed the hanging mice, the corpse in the coffin and being uit by wet mops, one was even willing to walk on the final egg-shelled floor to get out of there. Then upstairs the main events were going on. In a side room was the NBlue Roomu which had the gypsy and her crystal ball. In the gym was the Souvenir shop, and its de- tested confetti, the art room, basketball throw and the dart game. The carnival was also kept going by the cake walk, telegram booth and votes for the queen. At last the evening was drawn to a close by the crowning ofthe Carnival Queen. Candidates chosen from seventh to twelfth grades were: Priscilla Miller, Margaret Murray, Shirley Hauskins, JoAnn Brue, Carmen Stowe, and Delores Albers. After the votes were counted, the queens were escorted on the stage and presented to the audience by M . Schriner, who crowned Miss Shirley Hauskins 'Carnival Queen of l95O' and also presented to her a cor- sage of roses. ,4 5 If S Declamution Buffalo Center was well represented throughout the entire Declamatory Contest. Everyone dressed up in their formals and best suits entered the stage on a walk and found a scene representing a street cafe scene at the Mardi Gras in old New Orleans. It was a gay place with all the bright colors made with crepe pap- er and many balloons. On each of the small decorated tables was a lighted can- dle and each table was set up so as to represent some of the famous old cafes of that colorful city. They were served a very delicious meal of surprise punch, baked ham, parslied new potatoes, green beans, confetti salad, strawberry delight, relish plate, rolls, and coffee.
