A Sunday afternoon tea was held in the home of Mrs. R. E. Mailhard. The ban- quet, Premiere Performance was held at the Hotel Bradford on Thursday evening. The initial pledging was held at the home of Mrs. Jay Beekmann, a sponsor. Homecoming week was a highlight of the year for the Betas. Their float, Friendship, was awarded Sweepstakes in the parade judging. President Marlys Jessen was an attendant to the Homecoming Queen. The second semester started with Help Week. The pledges were activated at a dinner held at the Steak House on Thursday evening. The annual Beta Heart Hop was held the following week in Beaver Hall. The second semester informal rush party was held at the home of Mrs. John Sorenson. The new pledges took their initial pledge at a dinner party. The final pledge dinner and installation of 1960-61 officers was held at the Steak House. After four days of stunts and initiation the girls took their final pledge at the annual pledge banquet. Entre Nous, a social organization for girls, was established on campus in 1939. This club strives to promote social and cultural activities for its members. Fall activities opened with the annual Get Ac- quainted Tea for prospective members, which v as held in the home of Mrs. R. W. Thomas. New mem- bers were initiated through their participation in building a float and in other Homecoming activities. Included in the winter activities was a Guest Night held in the home of Mrs. Jake LaFoy, with Miss Jean- nie Lowdon as guest speaker. Spring activities included the annual spring picnic of May 9, and the Spring Banquet of May 23. Kuehl 62 The Buena Vista Circle K Club, which was organ- ized in 1950, was the thirteenth club to receive a charter from Circle K International. Circle K is the college level of the Kiwanis Club, with whom it works in connection with many projects of service to both the campus and community. The purpose of Circle K is to provide college men with on organization in which they can have good fel- lowship, be of service to others, and secure valuable experience in working with others. Circle K was again very active on campus this year. Among the projects carried out were ushering at various college and community events, the annual community pancake supper, and selling Christmas cords. The main event of the year was the annual appreciation banquet, which was held April 27, 1960, at the Cobblestone Inn. Delegates were sent this year to the International Convention at Delaware, Ohio. Fisher. The award, an engraved sterling silver wallet-size card, is awarded on the basis of the senior ' s contribution to the team plus his general citizenship and scholastic qualities. Since the award was established in 1925, this marks the first time two players have received the honor in any one sports season. 78 Football players ' parents are given recognition during half-time ceremonies. Coach Dean Laun ' s 1959 Bueno Vista College football team rolled up the best season record in 34 years, winning eight of nine games. Only loss during the season was to Iowa conference champion Wort- burg which finished its second consecutive year of undefeated play. Foul weather plagued the Beavers all foil, but Laun ' s Mighty Mud- ders, as they were known, played the schedule a game at a time and wound up second in the conference standings. Go! The Buena Vista college basketball team turned in its first winning season in eight years last winter and came within one game of partici- pating in the national NAIA tournament at Kansas City. Overall, the Beavers had a 12—1 1 season and tied for fifth in the Iowa conference race. The Beavers opened their track season with the Iowa Teachers In- door Relays where Wally Hinman won the 50-yard dash again as in 1959. On April 9, the Beavers finished 7 of the 13 teams competing at the South Dakota Invitational. At Westmar on April 19, the Beavers won the Westmar Triangular. During the IIAC Relays on April 22, the team placed in three of four events. During the Drake Relays, Coach Dean Laun ' s 880 relay team placed fifth of the Iowa College group. The team consisted of Hinman, Subbert, Lineweaver, and Schwitters. In early May, the Beavers participated in the Sioux City Relays and the Howard Wood Relays. The Buena Vista Invitational, which was held here on May 17, was won by the local team. Kurth The spiritual highlight of the year at Buena Vista College is Spiritual Emphasis Week. During the week there is opportunity to grow spiritually through worship, word and song, and through Christian fellowship. The featured speaker throughout the week was Dr. Andrew E. Kurth, Executive for the Synod of Illinois. During his pastorates he served churches In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Ann Arbor and Detroit, Michigan. The Religious Activities Committee, composed of both faculty and students, is to guide and to direct Christian activities on campus and to encourage the development of the spiritual life of the student. Financing of Chung Choon Ki, the Buena Vista Korean orphan, is a duty of this organization through the help of the entire student body. Included in the Parents ' Day pro- gram were an address by President John A. Fisher and a panel discussion. Other activities of the week included a duo piano recital, a concert by the college choir. Fine Arts tea, presenta- tion by the college wind ensemble, and a display of color reproductions and art exhibits. These scenes ore from Thornton Wilder ' s play, The Skin of Our Teeth, which was pre- sented by the Buena Vista Players. Prof. John Gooch directed the production. Final event on the Fine Arts Week schedule was the Sioux City Symphonette, directed by Leo Kucinski, which performed in the high school auditorium. Spring Formal Following the theme of Ebb-Tide, the all-college Spring Formal was held May 3, at the Cobblestone Inn. After the din- ner the couples danced to the music of Alvin Frick. Victory Arch Early in the year the ground was broken for the Victory Arch. Student Council President Bob O ' Rourke turned over the first shovel of dirt. Following the Senior Farewell Chapel the nearly completed Vic- tory Arch was dedi- cated. Participating in the ceremony were re- tiring Student Council President Bob O ' Rourke, new President Larry Eicksteadt, President Fisher, and Professor Beekmann. Through the efforts of the student body this Victory Arch is now a part of Buena Vista College. The class of 1960, who as freshmen witnessed the destruction of Old Main by fire, was the first to march through this Arch as a fi- nale to four years of col- lege.
