Progress in Science Diane Rivett, Daniel Jarabeck, and Wayne Tomich, students in Mrs. Murdock's First and Second Grade at Star School, pose with a ham- ster and chipmunk which have been brought to school so this class can observe at first hand the feeding habits of animals. In addition, the pupils learn to care for them and leam about their living habits. This serves as a background for the study of natural history and, later, zoology The chart in the background shows items of scientific interest that the children have leamed about during the year. For instance, the chart in the background shows information about magnets that the children have arrived at through simple scientific experiments. These Third and Fourth Grade pupils from Mrs. Tinkus 's room, Mary Beth Mueller and Terry Melzo, are seen inspecting a coal gar- den. This is a common experiment designed to inspire scientific curiosity on the part of the students. Coal, coarse salt, ammonia, household blueing, water, and food coloring are combined to form starlike crystals in glowing colors. Growth of the crystals is a matter of hours. The wonder of this simple chemical reaction touches off many questions about the wonderful world of chemistry in which we live. Danny Ahrens, and Maureen Peddler, pupils in Mrs. Schrnidt's Fifth and Sixth Grade Room, point out a poster display constructed during the unit the class has just completed on teeth. The class has leamed what foock help make teeth healthy, the minerals of which the teeth are made, why brushing is important, and h0w to brush their teeth in the best fashion. Visual aids such as posters, movies, film strips and bulletin boards, books and reference material, diagrams and charts are just some of the tools used in this project in health education.
