BUENA HAS LONG HISTORY A ghost rising from the past--untold secrets that shall never be known--romance, mystery--all this mingles with the history of Buena School. The original building was a humble adobe house that was once a store in Buena City which ex- isted about 48 years ago for only one year. The little city flourished while the Southern Pacific Railroad was building a branch line from Lewis Springs to Fort Huachuca. The citizens of this forgotten city had very ambitious beginnings, for foundations for the town can still be found. And somewhere on the desert near the present school, lay 17 unmarked graves-- alone and forgotten by all. The humble adobe house, which was the original building of Buena High, is now Mrs. Harris English room. Buena School replaced earlier schools in Lewis Springs, Charleston, Carr Canyon, and Ramsay Canyon. In 1881 the Ramsay Canyon and Carr Canyon schools were in use Professor McCabe taught at the Ramsay Canyon school. Professor McCabe always taught his stud- dents well-armed, but in 1884 four Charleston children were massacred by the Apaches near the school. McCabe financed more weapons for the school by sponsoring Western dances. He settled the liquor disputes at his dances of shackling offenders to a huge tree in the school yard. Today the tree can still be seen on the Wallace Haverty Ranch. One Professor at Buena, Professor Witherspoon, had his class so disrupted by his students tar- get practicing out of the classroom windows that he was compelled to build a special shelf and the students were required to check their guns in before entering the class. The first teacher at Buena School was Mrs. Hattie G. Whittamore who taught three years. Mrs. Lewis taught the fall term of 1916 and Miss Ruby Fulghum, who was at one time Cochise County Super- intendent of Schools, taught the fall term of 1916 and 1917-18. The following year Mrs. E. Carrier and then Mrs. E. H. Higgins taught. In 1920-21, Harriette Blackmer taught and by the next year the Bobacamari district with a Camp Stone had been added to the Buena District. Mrs. James, who taught from 1933 to 1935, lived in the mountains with her mother and father-in- law, Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie James who were pioneer settlers. During the winter it was quite a struggle getting through the deep snow to the school. Mrs. James began a kindergarten and furnished it with materials at her own expense. She bright- ened up the drab, desolate school rooms with bright curtains and taught home economics to the older girls. They prepared hot lunches for the students who were too poor to bring any lunch at all, These are just a few of the highlights of Buena's long and interesting history. From its meager beginning in the days of the early frontier to its present position in the space age, Buena High School has always been a beacon beaming forth rays of knowledge to all who strived for it
