BASKETBALL SEASON The Colts had their best year ever in basketball and really have shown improvement over the 'eceeding two years. The Colts started off the season at Douglas and dropped it to the Bulldogs 31 141. Tombstone was our next stop and again we failed to come up with a victory. The score was 53 f 60. After a week of hard practice, Coach Winslow was confident that we could give Douglas a good fun for their money' in our first home game of the season. ln front of the student body at the pre- 'ding pep assembly Coach Winslow said: 'We have never been defeated on our home court.' He was en- ,rely right, so that night we kept that record by defeating Douglas 47 to 46. Jimmy Wells paced lena with 20 points. The following night our home streak was broken as Benson beat us by 9 points, ' to 66. The following week end was fruitless and a real heart breaker. Safford edged by the Colts 1 the last 30 seconds to win by one point 47 to 46. Harvey Polk was high point man with 22 points 'nson was our next stop. The Colts were beaten in an over-time game 54 to 58. The score was 50 to I at the end of the 4th period. The Colts took on the conference champs next. Satur- Ly the Colts went to Safford and were again defeated 47 to 58. This was really a bad week end for ne Colts. The Morenci Wildcats were our next victims as the Colts beat them 54 to 53. Bisbee showed s why they were in second place by beating us 77 to 64. The fast break was our downfall in that Lme. Harvey Polk scored 30 points. The Colts packed their bags and went up north to Morenci for our :xt victory. This was the first win on the road for the Colts. Coolidge Bears of the Class 'N Juthwest Conference. Harvey Polk was high point man with 31 points and Bob Bertagnoli also hit an xtstanding total of 18. ' In the second round of the Tournament, the Colts were faced with their old opponents, the Jgales Apaches who later ended up Class 'A' South Champs and were second in the state finals. The paches showed their potential by defeating Buena 87 to 43, more than doubling the score. Ajo was ie only team in the tournament to hold Nogales under 80 points. The Colts came home in good spirits and we were very happy to have these boys represent us at ie tournament. They received many compliments while they were there. N 1 1
