Histor Of School The Bucyrus City School System was established in 1824 when a law was passed providing for the funds to support a public educational system. Classes met in school buildings in various locations over the years until 1850, when a new building was built on the present school site, a little to the west of the high school building. This build- ing served as the central elementary and high school until 1920 when a bond issue was passed providing for approximately one million dollars to be used to construct a new three story brick structure on the ground then occupied by the old Union building. The building provided for in the bond issue is our present high school. The plans provided for forty-eight classrooms, a one thousand seat auditorium with an adjacent gymnasium and a cafeteria. The cafeteria has not been used for many years and is now used by the band. The building was dedicated in 1922 although the bonds were just recently paid off in 1954. My The second floor, main hall. School. 4 History f School This year there are thirty-six teachers employed for grades seven through twelve, teaching some eight hundred and seventy-five students. The library has a collection of approximately three thousand books with a monthly circulation averaging 900. Engaged in the choral and instrumental music program there are approximately six hundred students. The school has a very active extracurricular club program with about twenty-five clubs participating. This year the Pep Club was organized for the 'supporters of the athletic teams. In 1955 the voters of Bucyrus approved a bond issue in the amount of one million six hundred fifty thousand dollars to be used for the construction of two new grade schools and additions to the other four schools. The Senior Class was saddened this year by the loss of two of our classmates, Phillip Yuhas and Richard Cluff. Phil died in an auto accident on October 26, 1956. His smile and gay chuckle will always be remembered by his classmates. Rich died on November 26, 1956, after a long illness. The memory of his quiet manner and friendliness will never be forgotten. Although they have gone before us, the memories of these two boys will live in our hearts always. You have all heard that experience is the best teacher, but if you do not have background or the trained mind that sees the implication of experi- ence, then it becomes valueless. There is a working principle under every ac- tivity which will give you accuracy, speed, and work well done. Knowledge is power. Never cease to learn. K Best Wishes. The Senior Class of 1957 leaves B.H.S. with a feeling of accomplishment. They outdid themselves on the Junior-Senior Receptiong they captured many scholastic honorsg and their gift to the school will be appreciated by all. This year they finally were able to enjoy a dance without having to do any work for it. The reception was a success as far as they were concerned. The Seniors chose blue and white as the class colorsg the white rose as their class flowerg and Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm, as their class motto. The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corners was the play selected by the two speech classes for presentation on March 28 and 29. All the Seniors will agree that their four years have been both educational and satisfying. We leave with pleasant memories. 18 Vhen From The . ,X-L . DONNA LEE ACHOR TERRY K. Next stop was Berlin where she gave out one hundred dolls. A few days later Nancy made an emergency on-the-spot trip to a refugee camp on the Hungarian border. Robert Struble, Vice-Pretidentp Mr. Stewart, Adzrforg -Ioan White, Secrelaryf john Pirnstill, Trearzzrer. Our junior Class appeared quite busy this year as they bustled around the athletic field on those cold, fall nights selling hot dogs and coke just to make money for the junior and Senior Reception. Wfhat they won't do for a little money! As soon as they finished that, they rushed around selling coke at the basketball games, But it seems that work never ends for them and all the hard-earned money was spent on the elegant junior and Senior Reception. Well, they did a good job under the leadership of Mr. Stewart and more work and pleasure will await them as they are seniors next year. 42 if .F l f uniors gm tw -5 ,fn 7 5 A , 1 .n vh l 'Q 5' J' N J N Jw' s , f 4. ...J 6 ,,. ,,'. The Sophomore class has accomplished some worthy projects this year, and they are all set to jump into the junior class bracket. They did very well selling coke at the tournaments this year, and the Sophomore Prom was a lot more fun than they dreamed it could be, They also chose some very nice class rings that they will be eager to get in the fall. Another big step for them will be to have their pictures taken by the chosen photographer for the annual. They will be kept busy enough to suit everyone when they take charge of the concession stands at the games. The seniors of next year are hoping they will give them a top notch reception equal to the one given this year. The 1956 football version of the Redmen was one of the best teams that Bucyrus High School has ever had. The record that.the team had was not a real impressive one, however, six wins and three losses cannot be overlooked as a poor season. On the contrary it was the best season that Bucyrus has had since 1948. Showing the sign of a truly good team, the Redmen improved as the season aged. This can be noted as the Redmen got off to a slow start in losing three of the first games, however, after these setbacks the boys, with Coach Frantz's guidance, overwhelmed their next five opponents. The highlight of the season must definitely be the homecoming game with Galion as the Redmen overcame the Galionites' hoax and overpowered them 41 to O. Les Hart was the only player from the team to be 'z placed on the first string N.O.L, squad, however, it was the feeling of many town boosters that a few of the other Redmen, along with Les, deserved a berth on the honora- ble team. The captains who were elected to guide the Redmen Were Ed Light and john Boom. Ed was also elected by his fellow players to receive the Michael Trophy, which is given each year to the outstanding player on the team. COACHES Left to Right: Wolfe Frantz Winefordner, D. Tschanen. 62 How It Happened Light and Strautli deny .1 Bellevue player. CLOBBEREDY Bucyrus was subdued in their second game of the season by Bellevue 29-0. Bellevue piled up a tremendous 322 yards on the ground at the Lane Street Field. Krupp of Bellevue scored on a 20 yard run in the first quarter and another 20 yard run in the fourth quarter. Light -.vas again the workhorse for the Redmen as he carried 22 times for 119 yards. Bucyrus fumbled 9 times but re- covered 7 of their own miscues. Bellevue was just too much for the Redmen. but many boys saw ac- tion for the local team, Hart and Hewitt worked hard in the line, and Mikusa and Rowland did a fine job on defense. TI-IERES BAD NEXVS TONIGHT! Unleashing a savage and speedy attack. the Whippets of Shelby defeated the Redmen 19-7 at the home field. Outplayed and trailing 7-0, Shelby came out for the second half of the game to com- pletely smother the Redmen offense. Shelby, a fumbling, outclassed team in the first half, came back with a powerful single wing attack which completely dismayed the Redmen. Light scored for Bucyrus in the second quarter and added the extra point which was enough to keep the Redmen in the lead until the fourth quarter. souisaxi The Redmen opened the regular season op- posing Tiffin Calvert at the Lane Street Field on September 14. The game was a thrilling contest in which the locals won 7-6 with Lights extra point being the margin of victory. Tiffin scored first in the first quarter on a lO yard pass play. However, the extra point attempt failed. Moments later the Redmen tallied with Butterman going 5 yards over left guard. Light then added the win- ning extrapoint. The second half was a see-saw battle with neither team reaching paydirt. Even though this game was a Hsqueekerf' it started the Redmen's season out on the right foot. Ed hits paydirt again. GROAN! ! Tiffin Columbian 27 -Bucyrus li was the way the final scoreboard read, but it really wasn't that bad! The game, played at Tiffin, saw the locals score late in the second quarter on a long pass .playg however, the extra point attempt failed. Except for that play the Redmen were in command during most of the play in the first half. The Redmen re- ceived the kick-off in the second half and moved the ball to the Tiffin three yard line. From there Light went over to tie the score and then he put the Redmen ahead as he added the extra point. The 7-6 lead was short-lived, however, as the locals then scored three times before the Redmen could reach paydirt. Wfhen the Redmen did reach the Tiffin goal, it was Light who lugged the pigskin across. Bucyrus had a tough break, injury wise, even before the game began as Boorn and Strauch were forced to stay out of action. Clady Goa and Rowland flij stop a Galion player for no gain. ja Light 6991 scores against Galion, REDMEN SURPRISE TRUCKERS On the night of October 12, the Redmen un- veiled a new team at Norwalk as they dealt the Truckers a stinging 15-O defeat to dampen the hosts Homecoming festivities. The game see-sawed back and forth until late in the second period when But- terman put the Redmen ahead with a 40 yard run for the score. After the ensuing kickoff Butter- man intercepted a Norwalk pass and dashed 55 yards to score again. Light added the extra point. Linemen, Hewitt, Kiess, and Hart. each did an out- standing defensive job in the victory. AT LAST! lt was an expert Redmen eleven who crushed the Galion Tigers on that fateful Qctober lq. eve- ning. The Redmen, encouraged by a loyal Home- coming crowd and seeking revenge for last years 55-CS defeat, showed little mercy toward the hapless Tigers. They tore the Galion line to shreds in reg- istering their most decisive triumph over the Tigers since the Q17-O landslide inlll-18. Light was by far the individual stand out in the -ll-O fiasco as he scored ll points. He also had a 'S yard jaunt into paydirt called back because of an illegal procedure penalty. The remaining scores were made by Fow- ler, Butterman, and Strauch whose score came on a 10 yard pass from XY'inters. The Redmen line was outstanding as they outcharged their rivals and recovered several fumbles which were brought about by bonecrushing tackles. lt was a terrific display of team desire that was witnessed by the Home- coming crowd and Homecoming Queen Miss Belle Rowland. The Redmen are introduced with their fathers before the Dads night contest. FOR DAD: BL'CYRL'S 27-XVILLARD 7 Rolling to their third consecutive victory, the fighting Redmen downed X I'illard in an N.O.L. Dads night contest. The Redmen splashed through the mud for their first score just 4 plays after the opening kick-off as XVinters found a gap in the right side of the line and went 31 yards for the touchdown. Light added the extra point. In the second quarter Light scampered 29 yards off left tackle for the second score. Butterman made the extra point and rninutes later he scored the third touchdown on a four yard plunge. Fowler added the point after the score. The next time the Redmen got their hands on the ball Light picked up 5 yards off guard and then lateraled to Fowler who went the remaining 24 yards for the final tally. Coach Frantz substituted freely during the second half and everyone on the team saw action. XX'illard hit for their lone score late in the third period. This was the final home game of the 1956 season. REDMEN OUTPLAY UPPER 26-0 The Redmen extended their winning streak to 4 games as they trounced Upper Sandusky 26-O. Bucyrus took the opening kickoff and drove for the score with Light carrying over from the one. In the second quarter Butterman went wide and ran 40 yards for the score behind the beautiful in- terference of Boorn, Fowler. and Light. Upper then drove to the Bucyrus one yardline where the Red- men stiffened their defense and took over. Three plays later Light took a handoff from Winters and scampered 80 yards for the score, A Winters pass to Butterman was good for the point after touch- down. With 50 seconds remaining in the second half the Redmen moved GO yards to paydirt climax- ing their drive on a pass from Wfinters to Strauch. Butterman scored the extra point. The line often Opened up huge holes for the backs and did a fine job on defense. Those who did commendable jobs were: Boorn, Hewitt, Kiess, Hart, Strauch, Aidt, and the Sites brothers. HIGHEST SCORE IN 22 YEARS! The Redmen ended their season in a blaze of glory on November 9, at Crestline as they rolled over the Bulldogs 62-7. Thescoring was started by the home team as they hit paydirt with only a few minutes gone in the game. This score, however, was never a factor in the game as the Redmen then commenced to rack up 62 consecutive points. Light scored the first touchdown on a 65 yard run and moments later he went 5 yards for another score. Butterman tallied the third score as he went 58 yards untouched. Light added the final touchdown of the first half as he ripped off tackle for IO yards. In the second half, Butterman opened the scoring with a I9 yard sprint and moments later Winters hit Strauch with a pass in the end zone for the sixth score of the game. The fourth quarter saw every Redmen in action and touchdowns were scored by Mikusa, Clady, and Crokie as the Redmen were not to be denied. Extra points in the rout were added by Winters, Butterman. Fowler. Clady, Rowland, Katterhenrich, and two for Light. The play of the line was superior as they held Crestline to only 24 yards rushing. Members of that tremendous for- ward wall were: Hewitt, Kiess, Boorn, Hart, and Srrauch. 4 ,W If-'-' i , MK Homecoming Left to Rigbf, Susie Hart, Mary Ann Huggins, Queen Belle Rowland Sherry McClellan, Kay Judd, ,f Queen Belle On the Left, Queen Belle was crowned hy co- captuin -Iohn Boorn and ro the Rilqlvl. co-captain Ed Light utltls the trntlitional kiss, The Queen and her court reigned over the 41 to 0 rout of Galion and the dance at the high school following the game. For the Redmen this basketball season cannot be called a success. Although they were in nearly every ball game right up to the finish, they lacked the necessary height to become a title contender. Losing game after game by just a few points, the boys could never seem to keep up a consistent attack from game to game. Bucyrus would play excellent basketball against the better teams, and then would slip badly against the weak ones. However, the season must not be counted as a total loss 'for the fun we had and the experience gained made it well worth our time. The F.H.A. started off their year by having a big membership drive which resulted in them having one of the largest groups of girls in their organization in many years. One of their big projects was to help Nancy Scheiber by collecting dolls for European children which she distributed while on her good will trip there. Some of their money-making projects were: Sponsoring a bake sale and an after game dance. In February they held their big social event which was a sweetheart dance. It was open to the public and the music was furnished by the high school dance band. F.H.A. week Was in March and our local chapter celebrated it by presenting an assembly to the school and by holding another bake sale. In May they had a tea which honored all the senior members and their mothers. 83 G. A. A. Row One, Left I0 Rigbl: K. Fowler, Recording Secretary P. Barnhart, Preridentx P. This year the Vocational lndustrial Club boasts a membership of twenty-one junior and senior boys who were taking the vocational course offered here in our school. Their first social event was a party held at Thanksgiving time. The guest speaker were Ferenc Szasz, Sr., of the General Hydraulics. The boys worked hard on a scrap drive which made it possible for them to make a trip to Detroit where they saw many things of interest to them dealing with their line of work. On February 22, the members attended the N,W.V.l.C. conference which was held in Toledo. The group also sent two delegates to the Ohio V.l.C. convention held in Columbus. As in years before, their chief money-making project was the operation of the coat check stand at all our home basketball games and during the county tournament. They also sponsored the dance after the Galion basketball game. 85 Sr. High Student Council . ZW 2435 Row One, Lef! lo Righl: D. Rittenhour, M. Blevins, P. Tufford, Secretu1ji.' R. Christman.
