In 1924 Mr. Baer was appointed Principal ot' the High School, a position he filled with distinc- tion until 1935, in which year he was elected Super- intendent of Schools. The popularity and good will he attained as Principal has continued and deepened during these years into a marked respect for his fairness, his clarity of judgment, and his desire to be of service to the students of B. H. S. and to the community. We, the Senior Class of 1946, take this oppor- tunity, Mr. Baer, to give you our vote of coniidence. SENIOIQ CLAII: HISTOIQY In September, 1940, there entered into B. H. S. a group of kids quite unaware of the things which their ,high school careers were to bring. This was the year when we had to get accustomed to the things around the building. Learning to walk on the right side of the corridor and to get to class on time when we could find the room, were a few of our numerous problems. Then after much success with our first year we went on proudly to the eighth. By this year we were old hands, to the high school life. Next came a quite important step-Freshmen. This year we organized with Mrs. Strawn as ad- visor and Ralph Hubble as president. We also had our first class party at the school. One more step up our high school ladder. The idea of being a Sophomore was quite a pleasing one to all of us. This year we chose Mrs. Carlo as advisor and John Travis as president. Our list of social events widened as the girls could now belong to G. R. and G. A. A. This year meant formal parties if one had the nerve to ask a fellow to go. Also some of our mellow-toned students were taken into the Glee Club. Next came an entirely new thrill. We were now just one step from the top-Juniors. Walking in the center entrance instead of side doors made us feel almost on an equal level with the Seniors. Now we mingled with them in clubs also. There was Boosters for our girl geniuses 173 and Senior H1-Y for the boys. As our advisor we chose Miss Hibarger and as officers: Clair Geiger, president: Holland Campbell, vice president: Vera Mead, secretary: and Norma McCorn1ick, treasurer. With the willing work of these and of the entire class our Junior-Senior Reception was a great success. Seniors at last! Now we have finally taken that final step. Our busiest but happiest year is now coming to a close. The thrill of having top place in our activities plus the front seats in the auditor- lum have added to our honor. The year has sped swiftly by with all our work to be done plus or- dering of name cards and invitations, taking of pictures, Baccalaureate and Commencement, and Junior-Senior Reception. We also gave a class play, Com-e Out ot' the Kitchen. As advisor this year we again chose Miss Hibarger and as officers: James Trautman, president: Maurice Pettit, vice president: Betty Williams, secretary: and Marion Pettit, treasurer. Now as we are leaving B. H. S. our hope is that other classes may have as good a time with their high school life as we had and that our good fortune may be lasting. We also leave to you spaces on desks where you too can sign your name and be remembered throughout the years to come. We leave to you the smiling faces of the teachers who tried to teach us. They put up a good fight, too. The football and basketball teams are all yours. Do better than we did, please. And last, but not least, dear Juniors, we want to leave to you those three happy, hard-working janitors who made life pleasant for us as we wandered through the halls of B. H. S. To the Sophomores we leave the Juniors. They will be your new upper classmen. Treat them with kindness and maybe someday one of them will buy you a lollypop. We also leave to your the beautiful rhythmic sounds of the typewriters of 302. We leave to you a share of the responsibility that once was ours. Freshmen, you are growing up, so we leave you our Wolf-calls . . . male and female. Use them wisely. We also leave to you the cold, cold mornings and that one dreadful thought, getting up. Also to you, dear Freshmen, we leave those wonderful inventions, Exams We leave to you memories of us Seniors strutting around as if we owned the place. Seventh and Eighth graders, the upperclasses have just about hogged the spotlight, but to you we leave the downstairs seats in the auditorium. We leave to you this thought: Some day we too will be Seniors. We leave you in the care of a couple of good men, Supt. D. C. Baer and Principal Earle R. Seidner. But as I journey from city to city, I find that it really was such a pity To waste all that worrying, fretting and time, When everyone really is doing just fine. They all seem as young as they can be, But then Why not we're 'bout forty-three. Some, I haven't seen for ages past, So what they're doing will be found in these pages - - My plane needs gas. so l'll have to stop At Helen Stull's station for fuel and pop. Lunches are served there by Messcrschmidt, Who gives you sandwiches without or with. Gloria Swanson keeps the place clean, While Staiger does dishes all by machine. They seem to be such a happy four, That I hate to leave and go out the door. I wander around from place to place, And try to find a familiar face. Who is that looking right at me? MADONNA HAALA, Vice President ROBERT CRIBLEZ, Secretary-Treasurer JUNIDIQ CLASS HISTUDY Recalling the past we see ourselves going into the auditorium, where we were told what to do. How proud we felt that first day of Junior High School. There was only one shadow on the day to make it less than perfect . . . . the Seniors paid no attention to us. As the year progressed we elected class officers: James Miller, presi- dentg Gwen Rife, vice presidentg Grace Shiffer, secretary-treasurer. Mr. Eldon Armbrust served as our advisor. We made money by selling magazines during the year. No officers were elected during the next year when we were in the eighth grade, but the Blue Triangle Theater PParty is still remembered as the chief event of the year. At last we were Freshmen. Now we were something or so we thought. Again, we elected no class officers and again the Blue Triangle Dinner Party and ball game marked the year's high for us. When at last we became Sophomores, we elected Charles Eiclier, presf- dentg Eugene Cress, vice-president, Mary Carver, secretary-treasurer. Mr. Charles Tschanen was elected advisor. The big event in the year was, cf course, the Sophomore Prom, which many members of the class can recall with pleasure. Having arrived at our Junior year, 11945-19461, Charles Eicher was re-elected class president. Madonna Haala became vice-president, and Rob- ert Criblez was elected to the thankless job of keeping the records azil collecting the money. The class ran the concession stand at all B. IPI. S. athletic events. The high water markqof our school life, so far, was the J unior-Senior Reception, May 3, 1946. Committee chairmen were: Program, Charles Garverick. Decoration, Regis Nelman. Menu, Su- zanne Rorick. Dining Room, Nancy Ashbaugh. Ticket, Edward Berry. The best is yet to be . . . next year we will have arrived. We hope to be Seniors. BUCYRIAN OOOOQO 1946 ANNUAL STAFF The school year 1945-1946 makes the thirty-sixth publication of the BUCYRIAN yearbook. This year the staff of fifteen members, under the faculty supervision of Mr. Havron, present the best book that time and money have enabled us to put together. We have worked very hard on the 1946 BUCYRIAN, and we believe it will compare favorably with some of the outstanding annuals previously published by our school. The Alumni section, a feature not included since the 1931 issue, should be of interest to all former B. H. S. students. The present whereabouts of the first Club can be found by consulting the Alumni section of this book. Membership is limited to Seniors taking the College Preparatory course or its equivalent. The original and continuing purpose of the club is to help Seniors to choose a college and to prepare them for admission. The Club has no fixed time of meeting. Its program, thus far, con- sists of securing representatives from Ohio colleges who address the club, from time to time, to present to our membership the advantages of the schools they represent. A library of college catalogs is being built up, with the hope that in time we may offer our membership reference to eve1'y catalog of every accredited school of highr learning in the United tSates. -David Glick, Secretary-Treasurer. -46- - --BUCYRIAN O Q O 0 0 0 1946 SENIOE?lH-Y The oiiicers heading the Senior Hi-Y Club for the year 1945-12546 were as follows: President, Roy Gar- Xin:Pvir'e president, Ralph Hubble: sm-eretary, 4 harll-s L'III'l0l'I treasurer, James Trautman. and our advisor. BUCYRUS, 6-TIFFIN COLUMBIAN, 34 The lack of experience cost the fighting Redmen heavily as they met misfortune at the hands of the Tiffin boys. The Redmen, unable to stop Tiffin's strong offense, yielded 21 points in the first half. The Red and White, experiencing first game jitters, failed to gain much yardage in the first three quart-ers. I-Iowever, Tiffin, scoring once in the third and early in the fourth, was suddenly stopped cold ln the fourth quarter by a roused Bucyrus eleven. With renewed spirit the Redmen through a sustained drive brought the ball to the 1 foot line where Jerry Gabriel crashed over for their only touchdown. As the game ended the slashing Redmen were again knocking at Tiffin's goal line. Although the game was lost the Redmen, showing much improvement in the fourth quarter, looked forward to a promising season. BUCYRUS, 7-UPPER SANDUSKY, 60 The fighting Redmen went into their second game of the season with very high spirits and high hopes of victory. As the game progress the Upper team, whose dazzling speed, power and passing attack had the Redmen compl-etely outmatched. The lone Bucyrus score came when with the score reading 21-0 against them the Redmen's spirit rose and they fought their way down the field a yard at a time in a steady, determined drive climaxed by a short pass from Miller to Kober in the end zone for the score. John Gabriel's conversion attempt was successful and the Redmen trailed 21-7. How- ever when the Red and White kicked off to the Rams, on the second play from scrimmage a long pass netted Upper their fourth touchdown of the evening as the half ended 28-7 in favor of Upper. In the second half the Redmen seemed helpless as Upper piled up 32 points to make the scoreboard read 60-7 as a sad and dejected Bucyrus team trudged to their locker room. BUCYRUS, 12-BELLEVUE, 26 The Bucyrus Redmen came back after their devastating defeat of the week before with a real tight- ing spirit to give a large and reportedly strong Bellevue eleven one of its toughest games of the year. Every man on the Bucyrus team showed improvement both offensively and defensively, and the spirit of the team rose to a new high ebb. Bellevue started the scoring in a big way when on their second running play they went 66 yards to score. The conversion was good and Bellevue led 7-0. However the Bucyrus team took the kick off and rolled right down the field with Jerry Gabriel going over from the five. The conversion failed and Bucyrus trailed 6-7. In the second quarter Bellevue worked their way down the field to score on a line buck. The conversion was successful putting Bellevue ahead 14-6. Toward th-e end of the half the Redmen took to the air and Miller threw a long pass to I-Iertzer who raced over making the score 14-12. The attempted conversion was no good. Bellevue drove to the Bucyrus three making a first down but a hard tackling team held them for four downs and the half ended. In the second half Bellevue held the scoring spotlight as they scored once in the third and once in the fourth quarter both conversion attempts failing. Late in the fourth quarter Bucyrus drove deep into Bellevue territory but were halted by a pouring rain in the last minutes of the game and though they played a very much improved game, they went down in defeat 26-12. BUCYRUS, 6-WILLARD, 0 Emerging from a tight battle the week before, the Red and White were determined to mark up a victory. The game was mostly give and take during the first three quarters with neither team mak- ing any important drives, with the Redmen holding a slight edge. However in the fourth quarter the fighting Redmen decided it was time to strike: so taking the ball on their own 32, they set up a sus- tained march through vicious teamwork that carried them to the two-yard stripe but were halted. After this drive the ball was constantly deep in Willard territory. With 20 seconds left in the game Jolmny Gabriel, right guard, snared a Willard pass and dashed 18 yards for the only touchdown of the game. The conversion was unsuccessful, and the game ended shortly with the Redmen enjoy- ing their first victory, 6-0. BUCYRUS, 0-NORWALK, 21 After winning from Willard and with their Dads giving out with encouragement, the fighting Redmen took to the field Dad's Nite with renewed spirit. The Norwalk team considerably outweighed the Bucyrus Redmen and proved to be a tough defensive barrier to the Red and White. G-etting off to a good start Ott of Norwalk intercepted a lateral thrown by Jerry Gabriel and ran for the first touchdown of the game. The conversion was good and the score read 7-0 in favor of Norwalk. Norwalk scored shortly after on a pass making the score 14-O. Then the Red and White took the ball on their 29 and drove to the Norwalk 44 where a 15- yard penalty advanced the ball further. While the Miller-Hubble pass combination clicked, Kober and Boyle handled the running. The fighting Reds fought to the one-foot line where Sweet of Nor- walk intercepted a pass and ran one hundred yards for a touchdown which was called back due to a penalty. The rest of the game was well balanced: although the Redmen fought their way deep into Nor- walk terrltory, they were unable to score. In the last quarter Norwalk again scored making the final score read 21-0. ,581 BUCYRII-A-N O- 0 0 0 9 0 1946 GAME IUMMADI EI BUCYRUS, 6-CRESTLINE, 7 Although this year's Bucyrus team was not a winning team or a team not familiar with defeat it was forced to swallow one of its bitterest pills of the season Friday night at Crestline. They went into the game sure that if they played well they would win but it was a sad team that came off the field knowing they could have won. Lady luck passed the Redmen completely by as early in the first quarter when a short Bucyrus pass was intercepted and run back 32 yards for Crestline's score. The place kick for the extra point was good and the Railroaders led 7-0. In the second quarter neither team could make much progress on the wet gridiron which was gradually being turned into a sea of mud. The Redmen came back in the second half trailing 7-0 and looked more powerful than at any previous time in the year. They drove steadily for a first down after first down and behind beautiful blocking Jerry Gabriel scored from the 26-yard line. The line plunge for the attempted extra point failed and the Redmen still trailed 6-7. Through the remainder of the third and fourth quarter Bucyrus consistently picked up first downs and held Crestline to practically no gains but fumbles cost heavily and the Redmen were unable to hold on to the ball long enough to score. Fate in the fourth quarter the Redmen blocked a punt of the Railroaders deep in Crestline's territory but were unable to pick up the necessary yardage and went down to defeat 7-6. BUCYRUS, 14-SHELBY, 24 The Bucyrus Redmen bouncing back from their stinging defeat at the hands of Crestline with a grim and determined spirit traveled to S lelby to play their best game of the year. The entire game consisted of hard, rough, aggressive play with a Bucyrus line and backfield which were both heavily outweighed matching everything Shelby had and more. The Redmen scored first when after an ex- change of punts Shelby was driven back to their own 24-yard line and Jerry Gabriel stole the ball from a Shelby runn-er and with almost all the Bucyrus team running interference he raced over to pay dirt. Brother John Gabrie1's place kick was good and the Redmen led 7-0. Shelby came back to score in the closing minutes of the first quarter but their conversion attempt failed and Bucyrus still led 7-6. In the early part of the second quarter Shelby managed to score again, failed to convert and led 12-7. In the remainder of the first half Bucyrus was hit very hard by penalties as they rambled on three very long runs but all were nullified by penalties and the game reached its peak of vicious- ness as Shelby again scored as the half ended and led the Redmen 18-7. In the third quarter both teams fought very hard to gain the upper hand but neither could make any sizeable gains and neither team gained much on the exchange of punts that followed until in the latter part of the fourth quar- ter Jerry Gabriel again stole the ball from the same Shelby back and tore off on a brilliant 76-yard run breaking through almost the entire Shelby team to score. John Gabriel again converted and Shel- by led 18-14. However time ran short on the Redmen as a long pass set Shelby in position to score on an end run and final gun sounded to end the Redmen's hopes of a victory as the scoreboard spelled defeat 24-14. GALION, 38-BUCYRUS, 0 The Bucyrus Redmen, after a hard played game the week before, came out on the field to meet their traditional foe, Galion, in the annual Homecoming game. Marilou Inscho was chosen Homecom- ing Queen and was attended by Vivian Roley and Vera Mead: however, Miss Inscho was unable to at- tend because of illness. More than 2,000 loyal fans looked on in despair as the Red and White, fail- ing to click, went down in defeat, 38-0. Tue Redmen got off on the wrong foot as Galion drove to two touchdowns in the first quarter, two in the second, and one more in each of the last two quarters. BUCYRUS, 0-DELAWARE, 34 Eight seniors finished their gridiron career for Bucyrus High Friday night as the Red and White journeyed south and met defeat at the hands of a powerful odensive Delaware team. Although the Redmen's offensive seemed to click fairly well, they were unable to stop the ground gains of Dela- ware. Delaware scored midway in the first period and again in the first part of the second period. going into the lead 13-0. The Redmen threatened to score in the latter part of the second period. when. after a long pass from Miller to Hubble. they fought their way viciously to the 7-yard line. but were halted and were unable to score as the hilf ended. In the second half the Bucyrus running game was fairly good, but again they were unable to hold the boys from Delaware as they scored twice in the third quarter and once again in the fourth. And so the gun sounded giving Delaware a 34-0 victory and drawing the curtain on the 1945 season. The season in terms of wins and losses was very unsuccessful for Bucyrus. But viewing the improvement shown throughout the season, hopes are high for the next year. ..59.. BUCYRLAN 6 Q Q Q Q 1946 BASKETBALL -mu-. The second half was close and tight as the Rams gradually pulled ahead to take the game by the score of 36 to 30. Although the score was tied up to the last event, the mile relay, the Redmen won that event and also the meet, the final score being 64-54. - The third meet of the year was a different story for Bucyrus, however. In a tri-meet at Kenton, the Redmen were third by a large margin. Kenton took first with 67 points, Bellefontaine, second with 60, and B. H. S. last with 21 points. Ashland's invitational meet with six schools entered was the last meet of the regular season be- fore the district meet at Mansfield. Bucyrus scored 2414 points to take fourth place, outscoring Norwalk and Galion. Port Clinton took first, with Painesville and Ashland taking second and third respectively. The district meet at Mansfield was the last event of the track season. ROY GARVIN. JUNIUIQ l'1l IDDIDTI This year the Junior High athletic program advanced more than ever before in the school's his- tory. A regular program was set up, equipment was furnished, and the boys from the seventh to the ninth grades were trained and sent into competition with Junior high teams of the surrounding towns. Coach Charles Tschanen handled the football team until the return of Coach Alex Kish from the navy, after which Coach Tschanen was made assistant Varsity coach and Coach Kish handled the team through the rest of the season and then coached the Junior high basketball team through their season. The Junior high football team played a number of inter-squad games and two games with Shelby. Although they lost both of their games to Shelby, they showed tremendous improvement by the time of their last game in which they were defeated 13-7 in a well-played, aggressive game. The Junior high basketball team played 12 games with the neighboring towns of Galion, Shelby, Crestline, Mansfield, Upper Sandusky, and Mt. Gilead. They won three of these 12 games defeating Shelby, Upper Sandusky and Mt. Gilead. The basketball team also showed great improvement through the season winning two of their last three games. It is hoped by all that this expansion of a Junior High athletic program will continue so as to better prepare boys for varsity competition. -63- BUCYRIAN 0 0 0 0 0 'ff 1946 SDDIQTI The athletic activities at Bucyrus High School this year were marked mainly by expansion and improvement. In the sports section we have given you comments of players and coaches, together with impressions which the year's activities have left upon them. We sincerely believe that when a year makes such a favorable and beneficial impression as the present one it can never be called un- successful. The main desire in the minds of those who leave high school athletics this year is that B. H. S. athletic activities will have a victorious future. The coaching staff consisted of four coaches: Palmer, Tschanen, Kish, and Wasylik. Mr. Jack Palmer came to Bucyrus this year to take over the job of building successful athletic teams. He came to our school with 14 years of coaching experience. He had just completed three years as head coach at Urbana where he had great success turning out championship teams in both football and basketball. This year at Bucyrus he acted as head coach for football, basketball, and track. Coach Palmer's comment on sports in general at B. H. S. in 1945-46 was: Despite the scores of the game, which, of course, indicate in no way the progress of the boys in basic fundamental development, it is quite pleasing to see individuals gain in stature by showing improvement from week to week. It is my hope that this basic foundation that they have received will have a beneficial effect on their spirit and action for the team's success in 1946-47. Ithorough- ly enjoyed working with the boys and my interest was concerned with their welfare. This year Mr. Charles Tschanen served his fifth year at B. H. S. This year he handled the Jun- ior high football team until the return of Coach Kish: he then served as assistant Varsity football coach and during the basketball season handled the reserve basketball squad. He had previously served as head coach of basketball and track for two years. As Junior high football and basketball coach, and as reserve basketball coach. His comment: I feel that conditions are improving and if B.icyrus maintains a youth athletic program even- tually it will have representative teams. In the latter part of October Mr. Alex Kish returned to Bucyrus High, after serving three years in the Navy. He was honorably discharged as a Cnief Petty Officer after having served as a Company Commander. Most of his service was at Sampson Naval Base. Mr. Kish after his return coached the Junior high football and basketball teams. His comment: I believe' there is promising material among the Junior high boys which will show up when they reach the Senior high years. At the beginning of the second semester Mr. Nicholas Wasylik returned to the coaching rangs ot' B. H. S. Coach Wasylik served in the Navy 26 months and was honorably discharged as a Lieuten- ant J. G. While in the Navy Nick was closely associated with athletics. During his first year in the Navy he played quarterback on the semi-pro Fort Pierce football team. He coached baseball at Fort Pierce and the following year acted as football backtield coach. His comment: Bucyrus will have a lot of experienced boys coming back next year and should have good teams. This spring as the Annual goes to press, the track team is hard at work preparing for six meets plus the N. O. L. meet at Galion, May 14, and the District meet at Mansfield. The baseball team is also hard at work preparing for six games plus a tournament whcih will open at Bucyrus when we meet Galion. Some highlights of the year were: A trip to Columbus to see a college football game, the football team being the guests of the Ohio State University. A trip to Cleveland to see a pro football gam: followed by a dinner. The football squad was the guest of Mr. Clayton E. Gerhart. A trip to Columbus to see a college basketball game followed by a lunch. The basketball team was the guest of Mr. Charles A. Michael. The annual football banquet with Coach Widloes of Ohio State as the main speaker, the foot- ball team being the guests of the Bucyrus Booster Club. One of the most important highlights of the year was the adoption of plans by the Board of Edu- cation for the erection of a field house on the high school athletic field. This building was made possible by a gift from the Ohio Locomotive Crane Co., through the downtown Booster Club. The presentation of this gift was made at the annual football banquet in December, 1944. The plans call for a building 90 by 20 feet and will adequately accommodate 70 players and is expected to be com- pleted by the 1946 football season. By resolution of the Board of Education this building is to be known as the Charles F'. Michael Memorial Building in memory of Charles F. Michael ,founder of the Ohio Locomotive Crane Company, a gentleman and a sportsman. It is thus after a year of great improvement that Bucyrus high school awaits with high hopes and expectancy the coming year of athletics. -641 B'UCYRlANi 'O 'O 0 4' ' 0' 4' 1946 ALUMNI The first BUCYRIAN yearbook of 1908 included an alumni directoryg thereafter, the yearbooks for 1912, 1929 and 1931 continued the list of our graduates. This present list is the first attempt since 1931 to present a complete and alphabetical roster of all B. H. S. graduates. Of the 3,400 alumni, some information is at hand except for about 100 persons, whose whereabouts are unknown. Lack of space prevented the inclusion of ad- dresses since 1901. The following key will be helpful in consulting these class lists: An asterisk Oil, in front of a name indicates the graduate is deceased. A second name following a name in parenthesis is the married name. A question mark UD in front of a name suggests the probability that the graduate is deceased. A maiden name, followed by a dagger ULD indicates that the graduate is married but that her married name is not known to the alumni editor. B. H. S. casualties in the war are indicated by CW.W.ID,'following the graduate's name. It is the alumni editor's hope that this list may serve as a nucleus for a complete directory of names, addresses and biographical notesg such di- rectory to be issued in some future yearbook. Mistakes are unavoidable, so are omissions: as they are found by read- ers of this list, please phone the office of the Superintendent of Schools, 157275, and report them. DAVID GLICK, Alumni Editor.
