Ex LIBRIS Cl J? The Bucyrian VOLUME XXI PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1931 BUCYRUS, OHIO PAGE 2 . . Dedication. . . O those, our beloved parents, who have with sacrifices offered us in- numerable opportunities in order to strengthen our possibilities of de- veloping into uiell educated, honorable, men and women, patterns of those who have so conscientiously reared us, we dedicate, as a small token of our unbounded respect and appreciation, this volume of the Bueyrian of 1931 until we are capable of more duly compensating them. Q.- ...Foreword .. HE goal toward which the staff has focused its intention has been that of preserving a record of high school life which in future days will stimulate interest and memory of time which, experienced, has drifted on in its fleeting course. An endcafuor has also been made to change the character of the book by relinquishing many ideas -used year after year, but still to maintain the spirit that accompanies such a publication. As president of our organization, she has been assisted in carrying out a new project by the other officers, namely, Nida Mae Holcombe, vice president, Margaret Foltz, sec- retary, Velma Wert, treasurer, Eleanor McMichael, pro- gram chairman, Anna Elizabeth Kantzer, social chair- man, and Esther Bieber, service chairman. Our advis- ers, Miss Kathryn Meck, Miss Mary Porter, Miss Helen Gooding, Miss Evelyn Schieber, Mrs. C. L. Kantzer, Mrs. H. E. Kiess, and Mrs. L. Haigh were invaluable in their assistance. l Our theme for the year in general meetings was avia- tion. Each meeting was planned to illustrate some phase of this subject, such as Gaining Speed , Masters of the Air , etc. The new project was the introduction of the hobby group system. The one hundred and forty members of the club followed their own inclination as to which of the -meg PAGE 22 ilgsm- several groups they wished to join. These groups includ- ed sports, dramatics, handicraft, music, and literature. Early in the year the cabinet of our club was invited to a friendship dinner given by the Girl Reserve cabinet of Mansfield high school. Ideas were gleaned in both directions for future use. Following this very excellent example our cabinet entertained at a dinner the cabinets of Mansfield, Galion, and Crestline Girl Reserve clubs. It was held on a regular meeting night sothat the visi- tors might attend and, incidently, take part in the pro- gram. This was very appropriately called The Pilots Pow-Wow. Another new item was introduced into this year's pro- gram. On April 17th the club had a Sweetheart banquet, modeled, perhaps, after the Sweetheart banquets made famous by the Hi-Y. Other special meetings included the Dads' meeting, Mothers' meeting, Alumni meeting and the joint meeting with the Hi-Y. As the saying goes, 'LA good time was had by all. -Margaret Foltz '32 THE BLUE TRIANGLE CLUB The Blue Triangle is an organization of eighth and ninth grade girls. This organization was organized in the fall of 1928 by some of the Girl Reserves. Now we have approximately one hundred and ten on the roll. In the fall a few of the girls ushered and directed the ladies at the W0men's Federation convention. In December We had a Christmas party. A potluck supper was enjoyed, after which a play was given. The Mother's party was held in May and the girls in- vited their mothers to this meeting. The program committee divided the club into parts, so every person would appear on one of the programs. The officers for this year werezf Betty Myers, presi- dent, Ruth Mae Rosencrans, vice president, June Baker, secretary, and Wilma Ruth Virtue, treasurer. -June Baker, '34 --Leg PAGE 23 SENIOR HI-Y CLUB The Senior Hi-Y club was originated in 1920. The base of the club which is more generally known as the four planks are: to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character. The same purpose, to promote interest in the various forms of modern and classical literature, was retained for this year. The club maintained the full quota of thirty members throughout the year, during which Elizabeth Weiss very ably served the organization as president, Aileen Philbin, vice president, and Velma Wert, secretary. Much of the success during the past year has been due to the faithful efforts of our advisers: Miss Ella Meck, Mrs. Willaman, and Mr. Havron. Our bi-monthly programs, on the second and fourth Monday evenings, were the direct results of the efforts --eg PAGE 26 lg-- of the various program committees. Our yearly program schedule was composed ofthe following themes: poetry, authors, education, ancient-medieval and modern litera- ture, short stories, nature study, traditions on Thanks- giving, and a patriotic discussion. Gther than these We enjoyed a social meeting, a meet- ing for the entertainment of our mothers, and a Literary club tea. On Friday, February 13, 1931, the members of the organization presented an assembly program which was enjoyable to all. This organization, now in its second year, is rapidly taking its place among the other prominent organizations of B. H. S. -Velma Wert, ,31 THE GIRLS' BOOSTER CLUB The Girls' Booster club of Bucyrus high school was organized for the purpose of backing school activities and rendering assistance in every possible way. The club is composed of seven Seniorsg Barbara Ryan, presidentg Anna E. Kantzer, secretary-treasurerg Florence Kiess, Geneva Fulton, Velma Wert, Alberta Schirnmoler, and Dorothy Snavely g and four Juniors: Margaret Foltz, Con- stance Haigh, Betty McPherson, and Mary Fligor. The members are chosen for their scholastic ability and par- ticipation in school activities. Miss Mary Porter is the very able club adviser. The club took the responsibility of decorating the ath- letic field for foot ball games. They also planned a num- ber of assemblies during the school year, sold basketball and football tickets, and ushered for the Elks' minstrel. The principal social events were an early breakfast at the Country club and a Hallovve'en party at the home of Margaret Foltz. Although this organization is rarely heard of or talked about, the members are always ready and willing te ren- der assistance at any time. -Anna E. This is due to the splendid cooperation of the members of the-band and our most able director, Mr. J. C. Hazen. Never before has B. H. S. been represented by a band as large and as well balanced. A few of the many band jobs in which they participated were: the inauguration of Governor White, football games, Farmers! Institute, and concert programs on the square during the summer. One of the biggest event of the year, was the Northern Ohio Band Festival held on May 1-2, at Fremont. Bands from Sandusky, Norwalk, Oberlin, Elyria, Fremont, Bel- levue, Willard, Clyde, Fostoria, and Bucyrus assembled there. The members of the band are: Trumpets:-E. Hltes, H. ACkG'l'??l'Cl'7Z, W. Hazen as direc- tor under whose baton, it is rapidly moving toward great- er activities. The orchestra has appeared on numerous occasions 5 at night school assembly programs, and in the Commence- ment Exercises. The greatest event of the year was the All County Orchestra for the Community Institute. Two hundred and thirty-five musicians participated in this event. It was under the direction of Mr. Snyder and Mr. R. B. Smith. The instrumentation is as follows: lst Violins:-B. Goebelt, C. Ley, A. Philbin, H. Hall, B. McPherson, C. Hciigh, R. Stoiiley, and E. At the beginning of the year the girls elected the follow- ing officers: Lois Wilhelm, president, Alice Quilter, sec- retary, Marjorie Olinger, treasurer, and Gertrude Miller, reporter. The girls made their first appearance in their new uni- forms, White dresses and red capes, White hose and slip- pers at night school and later sang at the County Teach- ers' meeting' and Teachers' and Business Men's banquet. The Glee club also sponsored the program given by the Ohio Wesleyan Boys' Glee club. The Girls' Glee club with the assistance of the Boys' Glee club gave the beautiful opereta Lady of the Ter- race by Penn. Officers elected at the beginning of the year were as follows: president, Robert Martin, secretary, Warren Spiegel, treasurer, Edward Haycookg news reporter, Robert Seele. The Boys' Glee club has appeared in public perform- ances several times, including assemblies. With the co- operation of the Girls' Glee club they made a success of the operetta The Lady of the Terrace , which was given in the latter part of the year. We have a boys quartet composed of members from our Glee club. They are: Edward Haycook, Walter Strickler, Arthur Kiess, and Robert Martin. . We also have some boys in the Hi-Y quartet, including Roger Freriks, Robert Black, and Wesley Crum. Because of absence, Cleo Miller's picture was not with the group. , 1 Those in the Glee club are as follows: Luther Baumgartner Edward I-Iaycook Warren Spiegel Robert Black Harry Howells Walter Strickler Robert Carlisle Arthur Kiess James Taylor Fern Carter Robert Martin Eugene Vaughn Wesley Crum Cleo Miller Jack Wheeler Gus Cullens Harold Peters Miss Edna Ulmer, director Roger Freriks Robert Seele Barbara Ryan, pianist -Warren Spiegel '31 --.egg PAGE 31 53-0-- SENIOR DRAMATIC CLUB The members of the Senior class interested in drama- tics met early in the fall with a membership of 75. Another short play was given in assembly later in the year. The success of the plays was largely due to the splen- did work of the coaches, Miss Ella Meck and Miss Virginia Dwire, and cooperation of the various commit- tees. -Virginifc Momzett '31 ANNUAL STAFF Honor should not be directed to any one individual for having assumed the sole duty in an attempt to make the annual of 1931 a success. However, credit should fall to the capable adviser, Mr. E. A. McAdams, and to the entire group composing the staff since each person so voluntarily offered the best of his ability in undertaking the tasks which the publication of the annual affords. The staff should be complimented for its remarkable cooperation in the work of publishing a book which provides a resume of the happenings of high school life. H. S. that she is a capable coach by the successful teams she turned out. She was always good natured and -kept the spirit of the team high. She has shown a fine spirit of cooperation and we sincerely hope she is here to guide the destiny of girl's athletics next year. COACH WINTERS The Fighting Redmen are an inspiration to every loyal Bucyrian. But the source of that fighting spirit is embedded in the Redmen's chief. To him they have given their pledge of loyalty, because, they have learned to love and admire him. Coach Winters, has directed the destinies of our athletic teams for the past four years and the success with which our teams have met, due in no small measure to the ability of our coach to instill in our boys, our football and baskketball machines, the deter- mination, desire, and the will to win that is so character- istic of himself. We are proud of you coach, and the athletic record you have won for B. H. S.. It is our sin- cere desire that in the future you remain at the stern of our athletic prows and achieve greater records for B. H. S. ASST. COACH NUSSBAUM When it was learned that Howard Nussbaum was hired for assistant coach, the players, students and town-people highly favored the appointment of the former B. H. S. star. It immediately recalled to their minds his many dazzling end runs, perfectly timed forward passes and several clever returns of punts. As a player, his reputa- tion was made. But there is a marked difference be- tween playing and coaching. However, it was only a short time until he had convinced every one that he was capable of doing the latter, as well as the former: As Coach Winter's assistant, he worked in harmony with the coach's plans, cooperated to the fullest extent and gave willingly of ihis time to promote within the high school better athletics. We hope he is with us again next year. 5 -.0655 PAGE 36 Bear- THIS PAGE IS SPONSORED BY THE OHIO LOCODIOTIVE CRANE CO. XR l 1930 FOOTBALL SEASON When school began and the football candidates were called, somewhere between thirty and thirty-five boys reported. This was all too few considering the size of our school and the population of our town. Most of these were small and inexperienced boys, as graduation took a heavy toll from last year's squad. Then the squad mem- bership dwindled ,from week to week until only twenty- five boys remained on the squad. Most of the time it was impossible to have a scrimmage and had it not been for some loyal alumni athletes who scrinimaged the var- sity each week, the results of the football season would have been vastly different. But for those boys who did stay on the squad all season, let me tell you right now that they were a real bunch of boys. They were eager and willing to learn, faithful and regular to practice, always remembering the code of the sportsman and having determination to win. This year's team had the distinction of being the first B. H. S. team to ever play a night football game. It was played at Ashland and ended in a 13 to 13 tie. The season can be remembered as a very successful one considering the team's lack of knowledge concerning the game. Each week the team showed improvement and played a better brand of ball. The Ashland, Findlay, Galion and Shelby games were the high lights of the season and during these games the team showed it was made up of Fighting Redmenf' THIS PAGE IS sPoNsonED nv THE OHIO 1.oc0Mo'rIvE CRANE co. -Al PAGE 37 4-1 --A 28 BUCYRUS AT CRESTLINE 0 In the curtain riser of the 1930 season Bucyrus downed the Crestline team on a very warm afternoon. The fight- ing redmen outplayed their opponents in every phase of the game thus permitting Coach Winters to use his entire squad which was very green most of whom were begin- ners. Much credit must be given to Coach Winters and assistant Coach Nussbaum for placing on the field a team which was made up of nearly all green and unexperienc- ed players and yet preformed so well for the first game. The redmen showed that they had a driving offense and a defense that was able to hold in the critical moments. Pope and McMillen, both beginners, and playing their first game showed lots of natural ability and earned a place on the first team. 6 BUCYRUS AT BEXLEY 13 On Septembery27th the Redmen journeyed to Bexley. Without a doubt this was the poorest played game of the season. The Redmen seemed to have no offense or de- fense whatever. The line was constantly breaking through and missing tackles back of the line of scrim- mage. The only exciting part of the whole game was a 55 yard run by Talbott made on a spinner play. The band followed the team to the game and in the afternoon the team and band attended the Ohio State vs. Mt. Union game. The band played several selections at the stadium and was given a big hand by the spectators. -.5635 PAGE 33 glgim- THIS PAGE IS SPONSORED BY THE OHIO l.0l'0fVl0'l'lYE CRANE FU. 9 MANSFIELD AT BUCYRUS 0 In a game played under good weather conditions the Redmen lost the second game to the Mansfield team. The game was hard fought throughout, with both lines play- ing a great brand of football. The Bucyrus line, on sev- eral occasions broke through and tackled the runner causing him to fumble. Seele who played left end made some beautiful tackles, when going down under punts. The Mansfield tallies came as a result of a field goal in the first quarter from the 25 yard line, and a touchdown in the start of the second half on a drive start- ing from the kick off. The team played as one unit and showed great improvement from the week before. 13 BUCYRUS AT ASHLAND 13 On October 17th the Murrymen played hosts to the Bucyrus Redmen in a night football game which was play- ed on the Ashland College field. This was the first night game played by any Bucyrus team. It proved to be a thriller for both Ashland and Bucyrus. In the first quar- ter both teams battled on even terms .neither scoring. In the second quarter the Wintersmen started a drive which resulted in a touchdown, being made by Miller in a sur- prise play. A minute later Ashland was forced to kick, the ball being down on Bucyrus 40 yard line. Another drive was started by Bucyrus which resulted in a touch- down being made by Miller on the same play. An Ash- land man being offsides gave us an extra pointj With but four minutes to play, Ashland started a rally which re- sulted in two touchdowns and an extra point caused by a Bucyrus end being offsides, thus tying the score. Ober- lander and Miller displayed brilliant work on the line, breaking through and spilling the Ashland backs for nice osses. THIS PAGE IS SPONSORED BY THE 01110 LOCOIVIOTIVE CRANE C0. PAGE 39 0 MARION AT BUCYRUS 22 The Harding team came to Bucyrus with the intention of ruining a perfectly good Dad's day, but were forced to go back to Marion greatly downhearted. In the early part of the first quarter Seele broke through and tackled a Harding ball carrier back of the goal line thus giving the Redmen a safety and two points. In the big second quarter Talbott, Bucyrus quarter back, scored three touchdowns and kicked two goals, by the aid of the good blocking of Clady. Paxton, a guard, proved in this game to be a good defense man, by breaking through and mak- ing some vicious tackles back of the line of scrimmage. In the second half the Redmen continued to outplay the Harding outfit but were unable to score. In this game the team showed steady improvement thus gaining the confidence of the football fans. 7 FINDLAY AT BUCYRUS 7 After a week of rest the Redmen put a wonderful brand of football against the big Findlay outfit, one of the strongest teams in the state. Early in the first quarter MclVIillen broke through and blocked 'a Findlay punt, giv- ing Bucyrus their first chance to score. We failed, but a few minutes later a drive was started from our own forty-five yard line with Pope carrying the ball on every play. In five nicely executed plays, Pope carried the ball to the one yard line where Talbott carried it across the goal line, and also kicked the goal. In the last quar- ter Findlay started a drive which netted them a touch: down and made their kick good for the extra pointfthus tying the score. The Wintersmenplayed the bestgame of the season against the Findlay outfit. Much praise must be given to Coach Winters for building up a de- fense to stop the visitorsftype of play consisting of six different formations, sweeping end runs and long passes. PAGE 40 lp, QI- THIS PAGE IS SPONSORED BY OHIO FARNIERQCOOPERATIVE MILK ASSOCIATION G1 If 6 GALION AT BUCYRUS 7 On November 15th Bucyrus played host to the strong Galion team. The first quarter turned out to be a punt- ing dual with the Redmen gaining on each exchange. In the 'second quarter the punting dual was resumed, as neither team seemed to be able to get its running attack functioning properly. The half ended in a score-less tie. At the start of the third quarter Galion displayed a good of- fense and on a play through the line a Galion back ran for a touchdown, but failed to make the point. Both teams then fought on even terms until the last few min- utes, when the Redmen started passing desperately. When all seemed in vain La Pointe, Bucyrus right end, leaped up in the air and caught a pass that looked im- possible to get and fell over the goal line for the tying score. The point was made good and thus the Redmen won the game. 6 BUCYRUS AT SHELBY 0 For the last game the Redmen journeyed to Shelby. The Shelby team although occupying a cellar berth in the leag- ue displayed some unknown power against Bucyrus. The hosts had a strong defense although the steadily improv- ing Wintersmen were able to gain without much trouble. Late in the third quarter a drive was started which re- sulted in a touchdown, with Pope carrying the ball over. Shaffer and Fegley were the strong defensive men in this game because they were constantly causing lots ofitrouble for the Shelby offense. There was no comparison be- tween the way the Redmen played this game and the way they played at the beginning of the season, which only shows that Bucyrus had in Coach Winters and assistant Coach Nussbaum two men who worked hard and handed out a lot of football and a group of boys that were willing to learn. Coach Nussbaum BA SKETBALL 1930-31 At the beginning of the basketball season all of us were Wondering what the prospects would be for the season. As in football several boys from last year's squad Would not be with us again. Thus, the team was handicapped and lacked experienced players, or leaders. The boys managed to win their first two games, ibut after that the league competition was found much hard- er. Try as they might, they just simply couldn't hit the basket and naturally you must make baskets if you Want to win games. So the basketball season closed with probably the poor- est record ever to be made by a B. H.'S. team. Like the business cycle, so are athletics, they have their ups and downs and sorry to say but this fyear We parallel the business depression which is decidedly down. Only one boy is lost to the team through graduation so the rest of the boys have a chance to redeem themselves next year. -mei? January 23 the Varsity played the best game of the year against Mansfield. The score was close throughout. A rally was started in the last part of the game by two beautiful shots by Talbott. Such determination to give their best for the high school is very commend- able. The girls have learned that defeat goes along with vic- tory in any game, Whether it is basketball or life and also that it is only through cooperation and team Work that anything can really be accomplished. Hard work and fair play was the motto ever before them in their games. Much new material has been discovered this year and this combined with stars of the inter-class tournament spells more victories for Bucyrus High. -Vive girls' basketball THIS PAGE IS SPONSORED BY H. The season, which provided the spectators with much pleasure as Well as excitement, turned out to be a very successful one. The Redmaids Won 8 out of 10 games. The first game of the season opened with Chatfield. Because of overanxiousness to win the girls became but- terfingers, but luck Was with our fighting Redmaids and the final score was 24-23. Esther Kissling proved her- self a very good find for B. H. S. and displayed her ability to play basketball in this game. The following week our girls traveled to Carey and here added another victory to their list. The game was an easy one and every member of the squad was given a chance to play. The game ended with a score of 33-21. Led by the fighting center, Mary Lohr, the Redmaids Won from the Alumni. Mary knows her basketball and proved it throughout the whole season. --7,355 PAGE 50 Ego.-' THIS PAGE IS SPONSORED BY VV. A. RIDDELL CO. One of the most interesting games of the season took place the following week when the Redmaids met their old rivals, none other than the flashy sextet from Fre- mont. This game was a disputed one but ended at a tie 40-40. Freda Haller, one of the regular players, play- ed a game which proved her ability to play basketball. Her consistent shooting and passwork did much toward the successfulness of the season. Meeting a team which proved to be a strong one, the Redmaids managed to chalk up another win. This game with Findlay gave the spectators plenty of thrills and the final score was 26-24 in favor of the locals. Up to the last fifteen seconds to play the game was decidedly a tie but Mary Pierce dropped in an unexpected basket. Mary was high point scorer for the team this season and also elected honorary captain at the close of the season. The following week the locals met Upper Sandusky. The game was a good one and ended in favor of the Redmaids. The final score was 37-21. THIS PAGE IS SPONSORED BY W. A. RIDDELL CO. -meg? PAGE 51 geol- Then came the Waterloo of the season. The visitors from Medina managed to give the undefeated locals their first taste of defeat. Never was a more exciting game ever witnessed by B. H. S. The hardfought game ended 27-29 for the visitors. Virginia Monnett stellar guard led the locals in their fighting attempt to Win. But all was in vain. The team visited Willard the next week. A mighty tough battle ended with the big end of the score in favor of the Redmaids 23-29. Mary Caton, one of the star guards, led the attack. Mary played real basketball the Whole season. Meeting their old rivals, Fremont, for the second time this season, the locals chalked up another Win to their credit. This game, as the preceding ones, was one of excitement. When the final bell sounded the score stood at 31-23 for the Redmaids. Kathryn Baker, one of the guards on the team, is well 'deserving of the letter she received. The fast sextet from Liberty gave the Redmaids their second taste of defeat. The final score was 24-27. Margaret Foltz, another of the local guards, made a name for herself by displaying her brand of basketball. Through all these games substitutions were made and much credit goes to the other members of the squad, Cleo Smith, Constance Haigh, Ruth Fritzinger. These girls furnished competition for the first team and also gave their contribution toward winning these games. SENIOR CLASS GIRLS BASKET BALL TEAM For the first time in the history of the class the girls have become the champion team of Bucyrus high school. In the very beginning every girl on the team made up her mind that she was going to make her class be the winner of the interclass tournament, and she fulfilled her task in great fashion. The Senior class had the disadvantage over the other teams in the fact that there were only thirteen girls out for positions and the majority of them were guards. The team had a fighting spirit from the beginning to the end and it was the cooperation and splendid sports- manship that kept them at the top of the list all during the tournament. The girls started at the beginning and worked with in- terest on their signals. They had one meeting and three practices before the tournament started. Their scores were very much higher than any of the other teams they played except the game in which they PAGE 54 played the eighth graders. The new track, which is rapidly nearing completion is expected to spur enthusiasm among high school stu- dents and town-folk alike. This and the making good of two members of last year's track squad will stimulate many new aspirants for places on the team this year. Last spring four boys earned letters from participating in three meets. Two of these were district ones, includ- ing some of the best track talent in northern Ohio, the other meet was a dual affair with Kenton, from which Bucyrus emerged victor by two points. Gordon Gray, junior, placed second in the mile at the district meet last year andis expected to win the event this year. He snag- ged seventh place in the C. A. C. indoor meet at Cleve- land March 21, with eighty-seven contestants competing. Others who made letterslast year are: Richard Krotz, senior, weight and dash many Willard Talbott, junior, weight and dash man, andlliputher Baumgartner, pole- TRACK vaulter and javelin thrower. These fellows are all back this year and are training intensely for the coming Mans- field relays. Other boys who have a chance of making a name for themselves in competition are: Foreman, dashes, Ross and Wiley, middle distance men, Pope, Ward, Kline and Barrett in the weights, Clady, Bradstock, D. Gray, Car- lisle and Cullen in the distance runsg and Miller, Seele, La Pointe, together with many junior high boys have signi- fied their intentions of trying out as soon as basketball becomes dormant. As yet there are no dual or triangular meets scheduled, but many schools have put in bids for meets at Bucyrus in the advent of finishing the track in time. It is hoped that at least four smaller meets can be arranged for the tracksters before they enter tough district and state competition. Frederick D. Cope, Mt. However, we cannot ling- er so we will have to move on and leave the coveted name -Seniors-to the classes that are still to come. In September, 1927, we entered B. H. S. as Freshies. Although we were not allowed to organize that year, we chose Mrs. Earl Gordon as our adviser to whom we owe much of our success. On March 9, we held the Fresh- man party which was the big social success of the year. A picnic at Seccaium park in June brought this year to a close. The next fall we resumed our duties as Sophs. Our class organized for the first time with Emmett Lerch, president, Virginia Monnett, vice-president, Florence Kiess, secretary, Richard Krotz, treasurer. Our class was well represented in athletics during the year. The biggest event of the year was the class party held on Friday, March 15. Much praise must be given to the committees headed by Geneva Fulton, menu, Esther Bieber, decoration, and Mary Caton, entertainment, who made this delightful party such a success. At the beginning of our Junior year we organized with the following officers: Donald Blair, president, Geneva Fulton, vice-president, Florence Kiess, secretary, Willard Clady, treasurer, and Mr. McAdams, adviser. , On May 16 the seniors were welcomed Aboard Ship by Captain Don Blair. This was the big event of the year, the Junior-Senior reception. The banquet hall represented a ship dining room and the table appointments and pro- gramme were carried out accordingly. The committees in charge of this affair were: program, Florence Kiess, chairman, menu, Nida M. Holcombe, chairman, decoration Anna E. Kantzer, chairman, eligibility, Barbara Ryan, chairman, and the table and chair committee, David Hen- derson, chairman. We wish to express our appreciation and thanks to Mr. McAdams for helping us to make this such a success. Our Junior year closed as did the pre- ceding year with a picnic at Seccaium Park. We returned to B. H. S. in the fall of '30 as Seniors. We elected Kannel Ireland, president, Margaret Wentz, vice-president, Alberta Schimmoler, secretary, Billie Goe- belt, treasurer, Mr. McAdams, faculty adviser. Again our class was well represented in both football and bas- ketball and also on the debate team. At the beginning of the year we were told that it would be impossible to have an annual, but through the cooperation of the class and the efforts of our adviser, Mr. McAdams, we were able EJ gublish an annual thereby retaining this custom in B. We have been loyal to dear old B. H. S. and as commen- cement time draws near, we bid farewell to the things that have been so dear to us, and carry with us many cherished memories. -Alberta Schimmoler '31 THIS PAGE IS SPONSORED BY DOZER STUDIO -meg? PAGE 67 Eem- THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF THE MOST HIGHLY DIGNIFIED SENIORS Oh hark, oh hear ye all, this last will and testament of the worthy class of the year of our Lord, nineteen hun- dred and thirty-one, who are now finishing their most looked for parole from the imprisonment of twelve most humble years. The offense being in not having the abil- ity to conquer the nouns, pronouns, verbs, dates C?D, the desire to count on the fingers, the longing to hand in il- legible masterpieces, etc., etc., how many have overcome these weaknesses as yet, I ask ye? To whom it may concern: Unto ye Superintendent Dietrich, we will furnish Amos 'n' Andy fresh-air taXi's tincorpulatedb for ye students to change classes in fifteen seconds. For our Principal Baer, we leave a list of barber shops specializing in doughnut haircuts. Unto Miss Mills, a most worthwhile book, How to Think by Wudja Thunket. For our dignified history teacher, Mr. Havron, a peti- tion drawn up by ye students of Bucyrus high school whereby all tests, exams and quizzes are declared J-U-N-K. Unto our caveman Borts, a guaranteed method of gett- ing sassy students out of the room quickly, namely, through the wall. We bequeath unto our music teacher, Miss Ulmer, a revised music book, Hot Tunes and Dances , by Boop A. Doop. Unto Miss Wise, we leave a rat terrior so that when she leaves the room the dog can terrorize the terrors of her classes. For Miss Winegartner, a correspondence course on fairy dancing. Unto the most deserving Junior class we bequeath the best seats in the auditorium to be taken by our lower classmen at our many assemblies. For our Sophs, we leave a new Yell whereby they can ring in their slightly awkward, Soph-o-more. Unto our windy, shiftless, freshmen, a nerve tonic with which they may settle themselves and become more dig- nified, even if it is impossible. We bequeath unto our seventh and eighth grades a delightful model for their many happy remaining years. And as such, in ye solemn presence of witnesses, we of the Senior class do ordain and establish this mess of words, Cfalsej. Signed Frectcr-tok Lybarger, of, Soakem den- Duckem, Law Attorneys. H. S. we realize thatthey have been our happiest. In September 1928, we entered the high school as Freshies and although we were a little frightened and awed by this title, we soon overcame this and took our place in the social life of the school. When the time came for the big event of the year, the Freshman party, We chose Miss Ann Niederheiser as our adviser. The party was held in the high school cafeteria, which was decorat- ed with our class colors, blue and gold. The following year, with the more advanced title of Sophomores, We re-entered the school with the hope of achieving even more than we had in our first year. This we did in both social life and athletics. The Sophomore party, in the form of a dance, was a great success, and the class picnic which was held later in the spring was enjoyed by all. In class basketball both the boys and girls took first place, thus bestowing more honors on our class. This year as Juniors and upperclassmen, we were per- mitted to organizeg the officers elected were: president, James Frey, vice president, Virginia Kanodeg secretary, Constance Haigh, treasurer, Frederick Baerkircberg and class adviser, Mr. Elmer Kramer. The money for the J unior-Senior reception was raised by the profits deriv- ed from selling of refreshments at football, basketball games and the class picture show- The Silent Enemy. The reception held May 15, was the most brilliant event of our high school years. The committee chairmen who were responsible for its success were Arthur Kiess, dec-' oration, Robert Rexroth, program, Virginia Kanode, or- chestra, Constance Haigh, menug Clara Jane Light, bud- get, Robert Seele, tables and chairs, and Dorothy Mc- Adams, eligibility. These chairmen Were ably assisted by the members of their committees and the Junior class as a Whole. We wish here to express our deep apprecia- tion to Mr. Kramer for his valuable efforts in our behalf. In athletics as Well as campus activities we have been to the front and during the last seasons have had a great number of letter men. And now, as we near the close of our Junior year We can look forward to a still more successful year in B. H. HE work is ended and the staff dreams happily of the leisure ahead but each thought is tinged with a pleasant memory of the toil during the past year. We rejoice in the excellent spirit of cooperation that all times has characterized the work on this book. In undertaking the publishing of this Bucyrian of 1931, we assumed an enormous responsibilityg a task made se- yere by precedent. In full realization of our job and with the mighty desire to succeed we have put forth our greatest energies in the hope of offering to you this Bucyrian, a book that you will always cherish. In passing we must not forget to express our sincere appreciation to the loyal citizens of Bucyrus who, finan- cially, assisted us to make this book possible. We also wish to express our appreciation to: The Messmore Studio, Lorain who furnished the pic- tures for grades seven to ten. The Dozer Studio, photographer and The J. W. Hopley Co., printers, for their splendid cooperation, at all times, in assisting us to get this book completed at this early date. -..sgf PAGE 107 jg...- SN fp ! ' 1.56.
