.. ,. ,1 , -W.....h ..,...em..--h 4.....7 Ma, W..-7-....t.t-.r......y.-a.wv BHS WELCOMES: ROLAND WIDDER The Real Roland Throughout man's history we, the young gen- eration, always have been a force trying to head society towards what we consider the ideal concept of life. Providing ideas and the- ories we always have been on initiating toc- tor in changes or reforms, or we even took initiative octions ourselves. Man's changes might have been successful considering mo- teriol improvements or institutional changes. Yet there is still on important aspect to be cc- complished. We still hove to work to create or enlarge mon's consciousness of responsi- bility towards his fellow men. There are many ways of looking upon this responsibility thus providing 0 variety of ditterent or even diverging woys in which would lead us to o sotistoctory result. I om convinced that the AFS program is one re- wording way to 0 result. Accepting language problems and cultural barriers this year pro- vided many opportunities for us all to realize that we all are aiming at one idea probably common for all people on earth: living on en- ioyoble life in o peaceful world! I would like to thank all of you who mode this year possbile for me, or contributed to make this one year lwhich will certainly have eHect on my whole lifel to such 0 unique experience. 4 v..' -17....37 e-v- -.- a-s-- Du 1 Mwwmumwwh-tuy-wagn-.pnm .. n l. .n H...

The plane was out of the clouds now. Beau- tiful, hilly mountains, iungles, tropical vegeta- Jim, S Trip to Thailand tion, and rice paddies came into view. The sudden realization that I was about to spend , a , , , two and a half months in Bangkok, Thailand t : i1; g finally hit me. I was half way around the i E M globe, and full of apprehension, excitement, ., t , , w W and tension. ' t Before long, I felt myself becoming familiar- ized with my new surroundings. I no longer felt like I didn't belong, and I overcame the feelings of selt-consciousness. Suddenly, I was no longer awkwardly manuevering my chopsticks, and my sisters didn't have an ex- cuse for giggling at the dinner table because I stopped dropping food in my lap. All mod- esty aside, I got to be skilled at manipulating my new eating utensils! I began to attempt to speak the Thai language to wear the Thai school uniform, to pay respect to my elders, and to follow Thai customs and traditions. I did not regard the lifestyle as odd, or in- ferior to the American culture. I did not feel I was losing my personal identity by practicing and adiusting to the changes, but rather I considered it a whole new challenge and a chance to broaden myself. Jimmy, Sister , and Roland The Thai people were eager and proud to teach AFSers or foreigners about their coun- try and its uniqueness, but even more pleased for us to show genuine, sincere inter- est in them. I can't begin to express the wonderful feel- ings my AFS experience instilled in me, be- cause I don't have that kind of mastery over words. Twenty AFSers sang, When AFS Comes Marching In on our departure at the airport, at the summer's termination. Every one of us hoped that the people we had to leave behind benefited, and were as en- riched as we were. It was a summer packed full of growing, learning, a little suFfering, lots of sharing, and love. Hopefully, the AFS mo- tive and hope will continue to spread, and people will become more aware of the sim- ilarities in all of us.
