The band had a very successful and busy year under the capable supervision of Mrs. Lorraine Dobson. The members of the band attended the Celtics-Warriors Basketball Game at the new Bangor Auditorium, the eveing of October 10. During the evening the band played many marches. On December 14 the Music Department of our school presented a concert which was enjoyed by many of the townspeople. The Band played at the basketballand football games during the year. The Band and Chorus also participated in exchange concerts with schools in this area. MAJORETTES The majorettes, led by Marjorie Mann, did a fine job representing the school in parades and other activities. The girls attended the Celtics-- Warriors Basketball Game with the Band, displaying their talents in twirl- ing and marching. The majorettes look very snappy in their new navy blue and gold uniforms. To accomplish its goal the council works in conjunction with the town health council and with the school doctor. It is responsible for such tasks as the issuance of immuni- zation and physical examination con- sensus slips. Officers for this year are Chairman - Basil Clark Secretary - Ruby Staples Rod Redman and Connie Baker were retained for last year's council to act as student advisors to this year's council. LEADER ' The Leaders Corps held a meeting on the second week of school for the purpose of electing officers for the coming year. They were President .... Ellen Hutchins Vice-President. . . Sally Cunningham The motion was made and carried to pay five cents dues per week for the purpose of obtaining awards for the girls who took active participation throughout the year. It is hoped to work out a system of awards according to rate of service. This year the girls have the Luman Warren students over to the gym every Monday to teach them Physical Education. As yet we have not had all the articles desired to carry on a full program, but we are now making simple pieces of equip- ment to be used in playing games that will broaden the activities. Each girl takes a turn of looking up the games to be played each Mondayg thus the younger students are given a good selection of activities. Mr. Ralph .Tewett extends many thanks to the girls in the Leaders' Corps for the fine co-operation and attitude that they take in instructing the younger stu- dents. The past year has been another very successful year for the Bucksport Chapter Future Farmers of America, The high-light of the year was the winning of the State Educational Exhibit Contest at Skowhegan Fair and the following trip to the Eastern States Exposition at Springfield, Mass. The trip to Springfield was certainly one to be remembered and the boys with their advisor, Mr, Blood, are anxious to attend the exposition next year if possible. Goodwill. lllllllll EXllllll'l'l0 On Friday, May 20th from Z :OO to 5 :OO there was an exhibition at the High School Auditorium of the work accomplished by students of Home Economics Agriculture, Shop, English, Mathematics, and Social Studies. At 7:00 in the evening the following program was presented: Selection by the Band, Presentation by the Speech Dept., a Fashion Show of the garments made by the sophomore, junior, and senior girls in Home Economics, High- lights on Debate, a Selection by the Glee Club, Physical Education demon- stration, a one-act play and a closing selection by the Band. Also, on exhibition were tables of articles drawn or made, illustrating mathematical principles. The science selection consisted of displays in the fields of chemistry, physics, and biology. Various items illustrating the phases of instruction in Farm Mechanics, Farm Enterprises, Individual Farm- ing Programs, and the Future Farmers of America were displayed by the Voc- ational Agricultural portion of the exhibition. On display were several term papers written by members of the Senior Col- lege Preparatory Class. A number of modern text books were exhibited by both the English and Home Economics classes. There were demonstrations of students taking shorthand and reading back. Mr. Covell was assisted by Mr. Georgitis, The team was lead by tri-captains, Ronald Mann, Philip Lowell, and Clyde Grindle. In their first game, which was lost to Crosby 28-0, the Bucks made mistakes because ofinexperience, but they showed promise of better games to come. Fol- lowing this loss, the Golden Bucks rolled up four straight victories over Orono, Z6-6, Dexter, 14-7, Ellsworth, Z0-6, and Dover-Foxcroft, 14-6. The Bucks were then defeated by a powerful Greenville team and also by Hampden. The nucleus of the team was made up of the following veteran lettermen: Ronald Mann, Lionel Harvey, Ralph Burgess, .Tohn Chenard, Richard Stubbs, Philip Lowell, James Swenson, Edwin Lowell, Clyde Grindle, Rod Redman, and James Keenan. They started the season by winning over a tough Ellsworth club, and continued by winning the next two, before losing to Bar Harbor. Their record was 12 wins and Z losses. This shows promise of good material for the Varsity Squad next year. FRE HMA BASKETBALL The freshman basketball team consisted of 10 players because of trans- portation difficulties and such. .Tohn Bunt, an Orland transfer, and David Smith held down the forward wall with .Tim Bailey at center. Tommy Stubbs and Barry Murchie were guards. John Des Iardins saw a lot of action at the guard spotwith Clarence Bridges helping out in the forward positions. Although the team's won and lost record is not too impressive, the team lead throughout many of their games and certainly displayed a fighting spirit in all the games, With the spirit and desire that the team had, we will be seeing many of the boys on the I.V. team next year, David Smith held down individual scoring honors with Barry Murchie close behind. The Bucks lost to Pemetic 13-123 then defeated John Bapst 7-4, and Blue Hill, 8-4. They were then beaten by Belfast 13-9. The Bucks beat Mt. Desert 5-3 and the following week lost to Old Town Z-0. The last game was with Brewer. The Bucks lost to them in the 13th inning by a score of 8-7. In the sche- duled games the team had a record of seven wins and four losses. They lost the annual game with the teachers by 2 runs. Last year's seniors who received letters are James Soper, Roland Ginn, Lewis Hutchins, Edwin Harriman. The players for '56 who received letters last year are Dale Hanson, Terry Brooks, Roland Heath, Gordon Deans and Rodman Redman. The team lost Robert Smith, a valuable player, to the Army. The Golden Bucks' efficient manager was Richard Stubbs. The team is proud and happy to have last year's coach, Mr. Cates, back J. V. BASEBALL The Junior Varsity baseball team, under the expert coaching of Mr. Blood, compiled a 5-3 win and lost record. Mercer. 110 C011 'FRY The 1955 Cross-Country Team had the most successful season in its history at Bucksport High School. The team had a record of seven wins and one loss, finishing second in two triangular meets and one four way meet. This fine record was highlighted by the Hancock County Championship and a tenth place finish in division A of the state meet. Captain Willis paced the team although he was not in top shape part of the season because of illness and a knee injury. Murchie was the number two man. He was the first Bucksport runner to finish in the State Meet. It was his first year with the team. Brooks came along fast the last half of the season and finished sixth in the County Meet. The following were winners of the B : Carleton Willis, Robert Murchie, Terry Brooks, Gordon Deans, Wayne Grindle, Wilbur Smith, Durwood Gray, Co-captains for next year are Bob Murchie and Terry Brooks. Carleton Willis is the only man lost by graduation.
