7 XX DEDICA T10 E, 'rina CLASS or 1963, dedicate this yearbook to Dn. Ervin. J. POLAK in recognition of his devoted service to the University and to his students. It is with great pride that we honor Dr. Polak, Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy, and thus show our ap- preciation for his honest and sincere strivings for our benefit. Dr. Polak attended Stanford University, where he studied Mechanical Engineering. He studied at the University of Califor- nia and at Columbia University and for six years headed the depart- ment of mathematics at the Academy of Aeronautics at LaGuardia Field before enrolling at Bucknell. Dr. Polak received both his bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees in 1951 from Bucknell University. He then served as a mathematician for the Roy J. San- ford Company at Watertown, Connecticut and for thc Curtiss Wright Corporation. Dr. Polak was appointed to the Bucknell faculty in 1954-. He received his doctorate from Princeton University in 1961. On the Bucknell campus, Dr. Polak is chairman of the Faculty Ad- visory Committce and the president of Phi Beta Kappa. We dedicate this hook to Dr. Polak not for his background and accomplishments, but .for his help to every student Whom he contacts. One realizes from the minute Dr. Polak enters a class- room, lights his pipe, and begins to lecture that this is a man of infinite knowledge, with a real power to instruct. Perhaps the greatest compliment we can pay Dr. Polak is to say that he is a teacher. He embodies the education of a professor, the patience of Job, and the understanding which only his students can truly comp1'ehend. Dr. Polak has the gift of drawing 'together the diverse fields of mathematics into a unity and bringing this unity to the levelhof student understanding. He transmits his interest in and love for his Held to the men and women in his courses. Dr. Polak's promptness, consideration, and patience unite to augment the careful explanations and detailed accounts of his lec- tures. . One feels the excitement of mathematics, and one understands the total meaning of the science. Dr. Polak offers a challenge to his students: the challenge of learning. He is a man who loves learning, and he can make the student love it. This dedication is an expression of recognition and thanks from the Class of 1963 to Dr. Polak. He is a worthy recipient of our gratitude and a true asset to Bucknell University.
