ALTHOUGH there is no conclusive evidence, all indica- tions are that the word l'agenda was chosen for the title of the Bucknell University yearbook because it meant a journal or a record. It is this original meaning that we would like to apply to the 1962 L,AGENDA. A yearbook as a journal or a record has, in the first place, a personal connotation. It is a record that preserves the personal memories of the particular group of Buck- nellians who composed the student body in this year of 1961- 62: in study, in extra-curricular activities, in sports, in the entire compass of college life. This yearbook will have personal value even if its only use is to help someone, par- ticularly a graduating senior, remember just what Old what's-his-name? looked like. More importantly, how- ever, we hope that this yearbook will recapture, for each reader, in the same way that a personal journal or a scrap- book does, the events, activities, and people that composed and touched upon his life at Bucknell. This meaning of the yearbook as a record has a broader connotation than that of a personal memory-book, however. Because a yearbook recaptures a unique year and a unique graduating class, it becomes part of the history of Bucknell. Long after the people who can remember this year and this graduating class have, themselves, gone from the university, this book will remain as a record. The class of 1962 is about to become a memory, and the one of the few ways this memory can be kept alive for future generations of Buck- nellians is by means of this yearbook. The central concept of the 1962 L'AcENDA is the year- book as a record: both personal and historical. As a per- sonal record, it includes everything relevant to this year and this graduating class. As a historical record, the yearbook refers to the history and tradition of Bucknell University. We have attempted to combine these two connotations by superimposing throughout the yearbook present-day symbols of the various aspects of college life, with which nearly any Bucknellian is familiar, with older engravings, symbolic of the same aspect of campus life. Many of the latter were taken from early issues of the L,AGENDA, and thus are al- ready part of the history of Bucknell. We hope that this uxtaposition of modern and historical, both in the concept of the yearbook and the actual book itself, will make this yearbook interesting and meaningful. 4

Partridge, associate professor of English. l-lis sincere and obvious devotion to his subject, his students, and the entire teaching profession make him more than worthy of this token of our appreciation. Dr. Partridge received his A.B. degree from Hobart College in 1938, his lVl.A. from the Uni- versity of Rochester in 1939, and his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1950. He began teaching at Bucknell in 1957 as an assistant professor of English. Prior to his arrival at Bucknell, Dr. Partridge had been an assistant professor at Cornell University. He had also taught at Hobart College, the University of Rochester, and Columbia Uni- versity. In 1959, he became an associate professor at Bucknell. These facts about Dr. Partridge could never fully illumine exactly what makes this man so out- standing as a person and a teacher, however. ,lust a few minutes in a classroom of his could make this fact much clearer than a long list of his aca- demic accomplishments. There is a radiant energy, an unending vitality about Dr. Partridge that is evident to any student from the first moment this man strides into class, deposits his ever-present pile of books on the desk and begins lecturing. From that moment on, the student is caught up in Dr. Partridgcis knowledge and love of literature and feels exhilerated, challenged, fascinated, but never bored. The literary work and Dr. Partridge com- bine to open up new worlds and new ways of looking at his own world that the student did not know existed. One soon finds, moreover, that one has not only been fascinated and challenged by this man, but one has learned as well. A class with Dr. Partridge proves that learning need not be the slow, tedious chore it sometimes is, but that lea1'ning is a fasci- nating adventure into the unknown. One begins to understand how one can love learning, not as a means to any specific goal, but for its own sake. ln short, one begins to understand why one has spent so much time and effort to attend college. With this dedication, then, the Class of 1962 is expressing its recognition of the part which Dr. Partridge is playing in making Bucknell the fine university it is. DEDICATIDN
