'llhus armed, the future teacher delves into the realms ol' guidance counseling, elementary or sec- ondary education. 'l'he higgest test ol an education student's college career comes in his senior year, when the long-awaited-or long- flreaded-opportunity to practice teach finally arrives. At Buck- nell those who will teach and guide young students in the luture are expected to he good students themselves. Only those education majors whose average is C or lvelter may take the course in student teaching. Buclcnell's education students are allorded closer contact with the teaching profession through chapters ol' the National Education Association and the Pennsylvania Student Ed- ucation Association, hoth established here in 1961. PHYSICS 'llhe laws of natural science in the field of electronics, mechanics, optics, and nuclear physics are examined and studied lxy student and faculty alike in the Physics depart- ment. ln its lahs and lectures the general and hasic princi- ples ol physics are taught. 'llhe most important aspect ol the course is the weekly lah period. Fundamental laws are hrought lu life through experiments and research done in the lahoratory. Under the guidance of lVlr. Rohert A. .Art- man, the department teaches students the many phases of physical phenomena through the use of lenses, mirrors, 26 force-measuring devices, and energy forces such as light, heat, and sound. 'l'emperaturc control mechanisms are stud- ied and the students produce and examine various thermal ellects on certain materials. Students who show proficiency in the held of physics, and those who are involved in advanced work may attain membership in the national physics honorary society, Sig- ma Pi Sigma. lVlcmhership in this organization is open to those students of high scholastic average who have com- pleted two 'physics courses almove 300.
