',l'hose students who are the most successful may become eligible for membership in the mathematics honorary, Pi lVln Epsilon. The president of this selective group this year is Charlotte 'De Shields. The Bucknell lVlathematics and Astronomy Department, headed by Dr. W. I. Miller, provides courses in many math- ematical. fields leading to careers in teaching, graduate rc- search, applied mathematics, and statistics. This year, for the first time, the Department ollers a BS. as well as an AB. degree in mathematics. Wllri knows but that one of our country's :future astron- auts may arise from Bucknell7s night and day astronomy courses? That odd-shaped building called the Bucknell Ob- servatory houses apparatus that enables students to view Saturn's strange rings or the moon's mysterious Hfaccf, Back this year in his regular teaching post is Bncknell's astronomer, Dr. lf.. BIOLOGY The study of biology provides the opportunity for slu- dents to examine organisms and their relationships to other Organisms and their environment. In the newly equipped and modernized laboratories students are able to study and expCl'llTlCIlt on many organisms ol which there are both live and P.l'Cse1'ved specimens. ln addition to individual experi- mentation and research, students are able to participate in field wo1'k in most of the biology, Zoology, and botany courses. Bueknell's Biology Department also provides lab- Oratoiries for indoor field work. In the greenhouse students 5i'j'11,lfilJSfii've over lfl-00 dillerent kinds of plants.
