PRESIDENT MERLE M. ODGERS the President s Messave Growth and development have characterized the years in Bucknell's history since 1953, when Merle M. Odgers stepped into office as President of the University. Under Dr. Odgers' energetic guidance the F. W. Olin Science Building, James S. Swartz Hall, the Freas-Rooke Swimming Pool, Coleman Hall, and the recently completed extension to Vaughan Literature Building have been added to Bucknell's physical plant. Faculty salaries have been increased and the academic program has been strengthened. President Odgers was educated at the University of Pennsylvania where he served as a teacher and an administrator. The President is a scholar of Latin, French, and English. Dr. Odgers has a particular interest in the poet Horace, which he shares with the World Literature class every fall. President and Mrs. Odgers entertain frequently. Their home at the corner of University Avenue and Loomis Street is the scene of many faculty and student gatherings. 22
