OLDER than her University is Mrs. Harriet W. Stevens, aged 104; the first woman graduate of Bucknell University is Mrs. G. XC. Beale — Right. J Jtf i sweep of Bucknell ' s history goes back one hundred years, when, through the hnpetus of a small group of far-sighted Baptist men and women, the Commonwealth of Penn- sylvania granted a charter to the University at Lewisburg . . . the one hundredth college to be established in America. Dr. Stephen Tay- lor, called from his post at Madison (now Colgate University) to supervise the organization of the University, drew up the Charter and secured its authorization at Harrisburg. B CI ClKl?€l)Lll )S first official president was Dr. Howard Malcolm, who took office in 1851, a time when students could look forward to four years of study in Latin, Greek, and Mathematics and walking three or four miles to classes in Taylor Hall, the only building where classes could be held. DON ' T FENCE ME IN may not have been written in 186S, bui it would have been appropriate for the girls in Larison Hall. » ly liberal as distinguished from professional, but Bucknell ' s peaceful growth was rudely shaken in 1863 when the rolling drums of General Lee ' s army were heard throughout the valleys of southern Pennsylvania. The male students enlisted as one body, to serve during the emergency, and the company com- posed of 77 men was honorably discharged after an active campaign of six weeks returning just in time for commence- ment exercises in July, 1863. C JL IFc tu v began to change rapidly after the war. A Great Opera House was built in Lewisburg where the Sunoco station now stands, but students could attend only if the faculty approved the plays. The new Baptist Church building was com- pleted, Lewisburg boasted gaslights, and the students of the University each gave two days labor towards the filling of the lower campus grounds and the completion of convenient walks. Jl, J 1879 when David Jayne Hill was inaugurated, the country and the school were in the midst of a revolution of thought, and both were enlarging their scope; both were grow- ing. The ten years of Dr. Hill ' s presidency saw students cru- sading for the first edition of the UNIVERSITY MIRROR, the establishment of a chapter of Phi Gamma Delta, and the opening DR. JUSTIN R. LOOMIS, President 18 7-1879, di- vided the college into four departments at the Univer- sity; English Academy, Classical Preparatory, Female Institute, and Male College. DR. DAVID JAYNE HILL, graduate to become President He served from 1879 to 1889. the first Bucknell of the University. BUCKNELL HALL, 188f , used for many years as Chapel and audi- torium. CROZER Theological Seminary, Upland, Pa., which took the place of the theological department at Bucknell in 1886. WILLIAM BUCKNELL in 1886 gave the largest single amount of money to the University up to this time, and was honored by the University in this year when it adopted his name. A
