In his innaugural address a century ago, the first president of BuckncU University, Stephen W. Taylor, sounded the challenge that has echoed through the one hundred years of the college ' s existence. Now, as then, Bucknell aims at sending forth students whom it has educated to live with and for others in a constantly changing and challenging world.

OLDER than her University is Mrs. Harriet W. Stevens, aged 104; the first woman graduate of Bucknell University is Mrs. G. XC. Beale — Right. J Jtf i sweep of Bucknell ' s history goes back one hundred years, when, through the hnpetus of a small group of far-sighted Baptist men and women, the Commonwealth of Penn- sylvania granted a charter to the University at Lewisburg . . . the one hundredth college to be established in America. Dr. Stephen Tay- lor, called from his post at Madison (now Colgate University) to supervise the organization of the University, drew up the Charter and secured its authorization at Harrisburg. B CI ClKl?€l)Lll )S first official president was Dr. Howard Malcolm, who took office in 1851, a time when students could look forward to four years of study in Latin, Greek, and Mathematics and walking three or four miles to classes in Taylor Hall, the only building where classes could be held.
