A record of the past year has a deeper value than merely the evoking of pleasant mem- ories. It is especially significant because of the changes that have been effected in every phase of activity on the campus. Life at the University has been designed upon new patterns. It is our desire to represent in this book the spirit of a new Bucknell. •—••■■■mil ...•■■iiilltti ♦ V-V-V-% ' - L A.GEN ' D JIH f iniiii.... x Book I Book II CONTENTS University Administration Faculty Freshmen Fall Sports Fraternities Sophomores Organizations Winter Sports Book III Book IV Jun lors Honorary Fraternities Spring Sports Seniors - 1 © 3 D DEDICATION R. RAINEY was entering upon his first year as President of Bucknell University when we, the class of 1935, began our student careers. Together we grew in knowledge and appre- ciation of Bucknell. As the third year of our college ex- perience draws to a close, we wish to acknowl- edge a respected leader and comrade. To him we dedicate this book. k ♦ ♦ ♦ L A.GET D IIIM ' j iniiii.. ftv ' -%, V V Li fe . DR. HOMER P. Rainey, a native Texan, is a graduate of Ferris Academy and of Austin College, where he served for a time as a member of the faculty. After receiving his Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago in 1924, he went to the University of Oregon as a Professor of Education, and from there was called to the Presidency of Franklin College. When he assumed this position, he was the youngest college president in the United States. Since his acceptance of the Presidency of Bucknell University, November 13, 1931, University organization has undergone distinct revision. Five academic groups have been formed; the curriculum has been revised; administration of student affairs has been reorganized; the Junior College has been started; one unit of the new building program has been completed. These projects represent a progressive program toward the realization of the true purpose of the liberal arts college. West on October 15, 1933. Student pastor and trustee of Bucknell University, and pastor of the Lewisburg Baptist Church, Dr. West was known as a man of high pur- pose and worthy act. For his career in the ministry, and for his endeavor in her service, his Alma Mater, Bucknell University, honors lim highly. Dr. Raymond M. Wlst ' F the men Bucknell is proud to call her sons, none was more loyal than Dr. Lincohi Hulley, President of John B. Stetson University until his death on January 20, 1934. One of three brothers to graduate from Bucknell, Dr. Hulley took a prominent part in college activities. At graduation his association with Bucknell did not cease. The University knew him as a well-loved professor and, in Later years, as an alumjii trustee. Scholarly attainment won for him a profusion of honors, his warm personality a host of friends. His name will live long in the annals of the University. Dr. Lincoln Hulley 11 Since September, 192 3 Dr. Romeyn H. Rivenburg has been Dean of the College at Bucknell University, his Alma Mater, from which he was graduated in the class of 1897. Dean Rivenburg has served as Presi- dent of the Higher Education Department of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and as President of the Eastern Association of College Deans and Advisers of Men. ROMI.VN HnNllY RiVHNBURG Dtait of the Colic fit- In 1914 Miss Amelia E. Clark received her A.B. degree from Elmira College, and the following year, her M.A. degree from Columbia. As Assistant Pro- fessor of French she taught at Elmira College from 1916 until 1924, when she came to Bucknell. Miss Clark was made Acting Dean of Women in 192 5 and the following year became Dean of Women. On leave of absence during the year 1932-33, she studied at New York University. Amllia Elizablth Clark Dcaii of Women Dean Miller holds his A.B. degree from the Uni- versity of Richmond and his M.A. degree from the University of Virginia. After teaching three years at William and Mary College, he was awarded a fellowship by the National Council. He spent two years at Columbia University in graduate study, then came to Bucknell in 1930 as Dean of Freshmen and Assistant Professor of Psychology. In February, 193 3 he was made Dean of Students. This ex-officio body of men is composed of the President, Homer P. Rainey; Director of the Junior College and Summer Extension, J. H. Eisenhaucr; Dean of the College, R. H. Rivenburg; Dean of Students, J. Hillis Miller; the Chairmen of the Five Academic Groups, S. C. Ogburn, H. W. Rabbins, R. L. Sutherland, F. M. Simpson, G. B. Lawson; and the Registrar, H. W. Holter. The Council was organized on November 30, 1932 for the purpose of handling those matters which are difficult to discuss adequately in a session of the entire faculty. Many of the old faculty committees have been abolished and their duties taken over by this unit. Matters dealing with admission, attendance, standing, curriculum and courses, registration, rules, regulations, the summer session and extension, are among those items now efficiently handled by this one administrative body. 13] Sprague, Coleman, bAiLrxTiNE, Rockwell. HiLLis Miller Deiin of St?iileiits ITH the exception of academic matters and stu- dent discipline, the general administrative super- vision of all matters relating to student life is centered in the office of the Dean of Students. The office of the Dean of Students was created by the Board of Trus- tees in the spring of 1933. It is a separate division responsi- ble directly to the President and has no organic connection with any of the other administrative offices on the campus. A fine spirit of cooperation exists between them. Realiz- ing that the typical American college campus is a com- plicated maze of organizations, activities and influences and that Bucknell is no excep- tion, the new office has set as its goal the intelligent facing of all extra-curricular activities and organizations in terms of the educational process. The goal set by the office explains the close relationship between students and faculty members in all the committees set up to supervise and govern student affairs. The Board of Publications, for example, supervises and manages all publications. This Board consists of three faculty members designated as advisers for the three publications repre- sented on the Board, and the editor and business manager of each publication. All staff appointments are approved by the Publications Board. In some cases the students make direct application to the Board. All contracts are examined and passed upon by the Board. Another illustration is the Artist Course Committee. Because of its wide range and significance for the University and the community at large, this committee is made up of seven faculty members and three students. This committee arranges for all the Artist Course numbers distributed through the college year, to the support of which the students contribute through the Student Budget. Another illustration is the Budget Committee. The Budget Committee consists of students and faculty members, and any organization or group interest is at liberty to appear before the Budget Committee and ask to be placed on the Budget. All claims will be weighed carefully by the committee and a report made to the Student-Faculty Congress, which has authority to regulate and to legislate with respect to all student affairs. The authority which the Congress exercises comes directly from the Dean of Students, and all committees and councils on the campus are subject to the direct control of the Congress. 20 THE STUDENT-FACULTY CONGRESS THE Student-Facul ty Congress is the supreme governing body on the campus. AH organizations and committees are definitely connected with the Congress, the membership of which includes twelve faculty members who are advisers for the twelve major interests and activities of students, and eighteen student representatives from eighteen interest groups on the campus. So far as possible, the Congress does not interfere with matters which concern a single interest group on the campus. When two or more activities or groups are concerned, the Congress has the power to legislate. Snavely Varuty Coach VARSITY FOOTBALL THE Buckncll varsity eleven, checked but twice, stampeded through one of Its most successful seasons to win seven games and to rank sixth among the major elevens of the East. Two hundred and three points were chalked up by Bucknell as against 57 made by opponents to give the Herd fourth place in the scoring records of the major Eastern teams. The 193 3 season marks the first time that Bucknell has been able to defeat all tra- ditional rivals, Temple, Lafayette, Vilianova, and Washington and Jefferson falling be- fore the powerful Herd. The final game of the season, a smashing 3 8-6 victory over Washmgton and Jefferson was the second time in thirte en games that Bucknell his defeated the Presidents. This game also went into the books as the Bison ' s nineteenth consecutive victory in Memorial Stadium. Great credit for the impressive work on the gridiron this fall must go to Carl G. Snavely, who rounded out his seventh and final year at the helm of the Thundering Herd, and to his able assistant, Max Reed. These two men, working with a squad of 43 players, moulded an eleven that was one of the greatest ever to wear the Orange and Blue. And here laurels must be placed upon the deserving shoulders of Dr. B. W. Griffith, graduate manager of athletics, who arranged for the team a schedule that was at all times adequate. The final score was ' 34 to 0. After an even first quarter, the Herd rallied to chalk up 14 points be- fore the intermission period. Lebanon Valley did not score a first down throughout the game, while the Bisons tallied 21 in their series of touchdown parades. RrZNlCllAK Rl lUliHlGHT Bucknell 46 Waynesburg 7 SCORING at will, Carl Snavely ' s Thundering Herd opened Its 193 3 season with an impressive 46 to 7 win over the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets. This was the fif- teenth consecutive home victory for the Bisons. Myers, starting his last season for the Orange and Blue, scored three times and shared honors with a stone- wail line that forced the visitors into the air time after time. 30] Duquesne 6 Bucknell O IN one of the keenest fought games of the season, the Night Riders of Duquesne University handed the Bisons their first defeat of the year by a 6 to margin. Gerald Baker, Duke left end, nabbed a pass that wob. bled out of the hands of Joe Reznicha and raced down the sidelines of Forbes Field to counter the evening ' s sole tally. Three Bluff warriors charged the Bison halfback who had raced back to pick out a receiver. With his arm set to let fly, he was tackled by Vidonii, a sub linesman, and the ball oated clumsily into the arms of the ast-moving Baker. Bucknell missed its chance to score arly in the game after Peters, Rhu- right, and Reznichak had brought the oval to the Duke 2 -yard stripe. Over anxious, the Herd suffered .in ff-side penalty which set them back to the 7-yard line. Reznichak drove p to the 2-yard line again, but it was ourth down and the Bisons lost the ai: ,U Bucknell 21 Lafayette O THE twinkling heels of Joe Rcz- nlcluk kept the Lafayette Leop- ard very much on the defensive all afternoon as the Herd chalked up a clean-cut 21 to win over the Leop- ards, playing before a 10,000 crowd of lounder ' s Day fans in Easton. Joe-Joe , with runs of 27, 23, 30, 12, and 60 yards was far and away the most brilliant performer of the game. Equally important in the Bison ' s pow- erful offensive display, were the high twisting spirals booted by Johnny Sitarsky, sophomore quarterback. His average for the afternoon was 40 yards per try. Drayton Farina Bucknell 19 Villanova 17 KACHEL, substitute tackle, play ed less than one minute for t Thundering Herd in its annu clash with the Villanova Cats in Phi adelphia, and changed a Villanova fou point lead into a Bison 19 to 17 vie tory. Kachel, who had replace: Dempsey in the closing seconds of tP game, charged through to block Hlg gin ' s punt and then fall on the ba over the Wildcat ' s goal to wipe ou an almost certain defeat. The Bisons scored in the third qua: ter soon after the kick-off when Bea went around left end to climax a Ion march down the field. Legs Endl put the Herd into the lead with a 4 yard gallop after an interception of Cat pass. [32] ♦ •♦ ♦ Bucknell 20 Temple 7 A TRIO of flashing Bison backs, a well-nigh perfect line, and Johnny Sitarsky ' s punting, all functioned together, and as a result Bucknell handed the Temple Owls their worst defeat in the seven con- tests they have played since 1927. Score, Bucknell 20, Temple 7. Starting in the first half the Bisons early demonstrated their crushing of- fense and took a commanding lead, Pethrs McGaughty BolSTON which they maintained throughout the game. More than 14,000 Homecoming Day fans filled most of the Memorial Stadium to see the Bisons score their seventeenth consecutive home victory. It was also the first time in twelve at- tempts that the Herd has been able to defeat the forces of Glenn S. Pop Warner. Myers, Peters, and Reznichak smashed the Owl line at will; and Sitarsky held the Cherry and White in safe territory throughout the after- noon. [33] ♦ ♦ ♦ Bucknell 12 Furman O PETERS and Myers led a powerful Bison attack against the highly touted Purple Hurricane from Furman University and as a result Bucknell scored its eighteenth con- secutive home victory by a comfort- able 12 to margin. Furman started strongly, but folded up after a 63 yard march to the Herd goal line failed to bear fruit. The Southern team was noticeably ham- pered by the extreme cold, especially in the passing. Western Maryland 14 Bucknell 13 A Western Maryland dark horse took the lead at the beginning and cantered home a winner on the Scranton track, after staving off several attempts on the part of the favored Bisons to overtake her. The margin of victory was very slim. Western Maryland winning 14 to 13. Shepherd booted home the winner for the lads from the neighboring state, while Reznichak and Sitarsky drove close to the wire all the way. Verhey ' s interception of a President pass and his subsequent 96 yard run for a touchdown was the high spot of the game. Washington and Jefferson, playing the hardest schedule of any major eleven in the East, showed the effects of the strenuous season, and after the initial quarter, folded up and offered little opposition to the hungry Bisons. This game proved to be the last, not only for the ten seniors but also for Coach Carl G. Suavely, who finished his seventh year in the services of the Orange and Blue. Two wins, one tie, and five losses represent the sum total of the Bison ' s labors for the year. Yet, a consideration of the handicaps under which this sport operates, places the above record in a much more favora- ble light than one is prone to rate it after a preliminary glance. This was the Herd ' s first season under a regular var- sity coach since the sport was organized. The initial win of the season came on Homecoming Day when the Reno charges opened a per- fect victory day for the Orange and Blue followers by handing a 4 to trouncing to the highly touted Temple Owls. Orloski, Ragusan, Gerakares, and Thomp- son featured in the startling up- set. The real thriller of the season was the set-to with the Univer- sity of Delaware, played on Loomis Field and won by the Bisons by a 3 to 2 score. Trail- ing 2 to 0, the Herd rallied to sink two goals and tie the score in the waning minutes of the game. Toward the end of the second extra period, a long boot, directed by Bob Thompson, captain-elect, found lodging in the net back of the Delaware goalie. The game ended a few seconds later. The season ' s losses were suf- fered at the feet of Franklin and Marshall College, East Stroudsburg State Teacher ' s College, University of Western Maryland, Dickinson College, and United States Naval Academy. The question was that of the eligibility of certain fraternity soccer players. The Council decided that the men were ineligible, and in spite of opposition and criticism from many sources, the decision was not reversed. The routine work of the S. I. A. C. includes drawing up schedules and selecting referees for intramural contests, deciding protests, and providing cups for the ciiampion- ship teams. Those in charge of sports this year are Barcus, fall sports, Harris and Simonsen, winter sports, and Dando, spring sports. Besides these four, all seniors, there are four junior assistants who will assume control next year. Kessler will take charge of fall sports; Glazier and McGaughey, winter sports; and Hughes, spring sports. [41] INTRAMURAL CROSS COUNTRY THE first intramural cup of the year was awarded to Delta Sigma when that fraternity won the cross country race by capturing first, fifth, seventh, and eigh- teenth places. The winning team was composed of Dill, Mandell, Elcome, and Bowler, who finished in the order named. Second place went to Alpha Chi Mu ' s team of Noll, Condict, Bower, and Potter, who finished sixth, ninth, fifteenth, and sixteenth, respectively. In third place came Sigma Alpha Epsilon with a team composed of Schachte, who finished third, Kielb, who came in tenth, Marvin, who was fourteenth, and McKee, who finished twenty-second. The course of the race was new, extending three and six-tenths miles, from the Memorial Gate to the Sigma Chi House, right to the river, right again to Gundy ' s farm, over to the State road, along the road to the stadium and into Loomis field by way of the Phi Psi House and the infirmary. After losing the first of the play-off games to Sigma Alpha Mu, the other finalists went on to win out in a five game series which gave them the cup. Peacefully reposing in the third and fourth places when the season had apparently been completed, Non-Fraternity and Sigma Alpha Mu were suddenly elevated to the two top posts when the Intramural Athletic Council discovered that several of the league leadei-s had violated the eligibility rules In the semi-finals the Independents eliminated Sigma Chi, while Sigma Alpha Mu entered the finals as a result of a victory over Alpha Phi Delta. Outstanding for the champs were Tom Vastine, outside right, and Stan Thompson, left halfback, both of whom were placed on the Btickiiclliciii ' s All Fraternity team. In all, approximately 200 men participated in the first intramural sport of the year. The main objective of the chorus is the study and public performance of oratorios, masses, and cantatas by the master composers, with the aim of developing an apprecia- tion of the type of music that is in keeping with the ideals of higher education. Three major compositions are given each year — one, the traditional Handel ' s Messiah , at Christmas; another, in collaboration with the symphony orchestra during the second semester; and a third, at Commencement. Bach ' s Passion of Saint Matthew will be performed during the festival week-end and Beethoven ' s Missa Solemnis , at Commencement. Solo parts are taken by the best voices selected from the faculty and the student body. Other soloists are brought in from Philadelphia and New York City. Missa Solemnis , the work which Beethoven himself calls his greatest, will be given with chorus and solo quartet composed of Olive Marshall, soprano; Lillian Helmstrand Fraser, con- tralto; Frank Oglesby, tenor; Edward Rhein, baritone. The chorus is coached by Melvin LeMon and Miss Grace Jenkins, both of the School of Music. L1U3J ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ CHRISTIAN Forrest D. Brown General Secretary Y. M. C. A. officers Vincent B. With but one vic- tory in six starts, the Bison mitt- men found the going hard throughout the season. The lone victory came as a result of a close bout with the W. J. ringmen. Troubled by the absence of real varsity material during the entire schedule. Coach Reno was forced to experiment with men, most of whom were new to the ring. Some of the more promi- nent beginners were Scranton, 13 5- pounder; Peterson, 115- pounder; Nelson, 12S-pounder; and Rosatti, unlimited. Dill and Pethick, veterans of the past few years, were the only consistent winners for the Reno- men. With Berley, these two men represented Bucknell at the Eastern Intercollegiate Confer- ence Finals, held in Morgans- town, West Virginia. Pethick and Dill won championships in their respective classes, while Berley was defeated in the semi- finals. After a 6 to 1 defeat at the hands of the Mountaineers in the season ' s opener, the Orange and Blue mittmen lost in succession to Army, Duquesne, Penn State, and Western Maryland. Winning the first game by a 26 to 17 score, the Sigma Chi team went on and won the second engagement by a 26 to 2 5 score. This second game went one extra period. Monahan and Anderson featured throughout the season for the champions and were especially prominent in the finals. Fitzgerald and Kubacki were the stars for the runners-up. During the regular season, the brand of play was not of as high caliber as is usually displayed in the court game by the Fraternity and Non-Fraternity representatives in the League. However, some of the quintets were above the ordinary level. Leading this group, in addition to the finalists, were such aggregations as the Sigma Alpha Mu team and the Phi Psi color bearers. The Theta Upsilon Omega outfit was also among the leaders. Intramural boxing this year again drew the most enthusiastic crowds attracted by intramural sports. Simonsen and Glazier, managers of winter intramural sports, ar- ranged the entire program. Sigma Chi, Kappa Delta Rho, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon had the greatest number of contestants in the finals. Peterson, scrappy Kappa Delta Rho midget, took a well- earned decision over Harvey, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, in the 115-pound class. Leavitt, Theta Upsilon Omega, was given the nod over Nelson, Kappa Delta Rho. Two knock- outs followed. Beck, Phi Gamma Delta, won from Miller, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, on a two-round technical knockout, and then Thompson, Sigma Chi, repeated Beck ' s per- formance by winning over Fairfield, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, in the same manner. In fact, the building program is intimately related to the new curricular and administra- tive organization of the University. It is designed to meet future educational needs. There is an educational principle or reason back of every single feature included in this program. The future educational objectives of the University were first of all determined with as much definiteness as possible, and then expert leadership was sought to devise the mosc beautiful and ef fective architecture possible to aid in the realization of these objectives. This means that the architecture of the building program is a functional architecture. It thus becomes a living, vital thing, serving an educational purpose. The architecture of the building program is intimately related to the educational program in another way. One of the major objectives of the University is to restore the arts to a fundamental place in the curricula of the Liberal Arts College. If this objective is to be realized, the two basic arts to be considered are architecture and land- scape. These establish the tone for everything else. It is our hope, therefore, to make the external environment of the University as beautiful as possible. A beautiful campus is itself a significant discipline. Bucknell is fortunate in the beauty of its natural en- vironment, and it is our purpose to maximize this natural beauty with an architecture thoroughly in harmony with it. Another feature of the architecture of the new development is that it is designed to become the finest expression of the best tradition in Pennsylvania architecture. It is our ambition to create on the Bucknell campus something which is an intimate part of the life of this environment, and something which will glorify the best in our history and tradition. Evidences of this objective are many in the design for the various build- ings on the Model. The Old Main tradition, for example, is carried out particularly in the Language and Literature building and also in the Social Science building. The new Library has a strong resemblance to old Independence Hall in Philadelphia, and the Chapel reflects the type of church architecture seen in many sections of Pennsylvania. Finally, it may be said that our objective is to create an environment through the building program which will be distinctively Bucknellian — something which will be in harmony with the best ideals of the institution, and something which will pro- vide a permanent enrichment to our life at Bucknell. .
