Pepperdine HonorsDr. Isabelle P. Buckley Pepperdine President, William Banowsky presents Dr. Buckley with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters award August 3,1975. A . Dr. Isabelle P. Buckley, founder and director of The Buckley Schooli in Sherman Oaks, received an honorary doctor of humane letters at the August 3 graduation exercises of Pepperdine University's Seaver College, President William Banowsky announced. Dr. Buckley is a counter-revolutionary academician who feels that discipline and respect are necessary for proper education. In The Buckley School, which teaches ages two through high school, the curiosity of youth is channeled into respect for elders, God and country which helps students attain greater academic proficiency and peace of mind. She is a doughty and determined counter-revolutionary with a passion for sound minds, manners and morals, said Time mag- azine. She stands against permissive education and the philosophy of john Dewey and believes in self-expression through self dis- cipline. . The Bukley School began in 1933 when the determined educator, upset by the poor teaching methods in public schools at that time, started with eight students. g Schooled with a unique blend of Australian, English and French teaching methods, she incorporated the best of each into a dis- ciplined educational setting which produces self-confident, well- adjusted and exceptionally talented graduates. The author of College Begins at Two which is published by Abbey Press, Dr.'iBuckley stresses that proper education begins at two when children learn to respect parents and authority. lf Q a child obeys, he respects,' she says. Ii he respects, he loves. For the child to begin the learning process early there must be a consistency of teaching both at home and in the classroom, ac- cording to Dr. Buckley. The success of this novel approach to teaching may be measured by the accomplishments of Buckley graduates. All 53 high school graduates this june will be attending college in the fall. The structure of The Buckley School does not mean play and laugh- ter are excluded. A child who never knows a child's world or the fantasy of play and the joy 'of games rarely matures, she says. He is not aware of what he has lost so his search brings only rest- lessness and often unhappindss for himself and those near to him. A visitor to the school, while observing the uniformdress and respect for elders, notes an attitude of contentment and happiness rarely seen on a public school campus. , . Dr. Buckley is a former syndicated columnist with Publishers Newspaper Syndicate and has written for numerous newspapers and magazines., She was nanied a 1969 Los Angeles Times Woman of the Year and has received an honorary degree from Newton College ofthe Sacred Heart in Boston. l We feel it is an honor to make this award to Dr. Buckley because of her great contributions tol private education, President Banow- sky said. Her concern for qhe total Human-physical, intellectual and spiritual-which so parallels the educational philosophy of Pepperdine is to be commerided. i l
