High school has pre- pared us to absorb the knowledge which will be imparted to us in the future. Most of us will forget the facts we have learned here, however, few who have had Mr. Gregorio as a teacher will forget his wisdom, con- cern, and ability to make his students realize their potential, not only as students, but also as human beings. He has helped a great number of us, and we are all very grateful to him. Mr. Gregorio, you have always told us never to make a decision when in doubt. It is without a single doubt that we, the graduating class of 1976, dedicate this yearbook to you. We will never be able to begin to thank you. Becky Ranninger, Senior Pepperdine HonorsDr. Isabelle P. Buckley Pepperdine President, William Banowsky presents Dr. Buckley with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters award August 3,1975. A . Dr. Isabelle P. Buckley, founder and director of The Buckley Schooli in Sherman Oaks, received an honorary doctor of humane letters at the August 3 graduation exercises of Pepperdine University's Seaver College, President William Banowsky announced. Dr. Buckley is a counter-revolutionary academician who feels that discipline and respect are necessary for proper education. In The Buckley School, which teaches ages two through high school, the curiosity of youth is channeled into respect for elders, God and country which helps students attain greater academic proficiency and peace of mind. She is a doughty and determined counter-revolutionary with a passion for sound minds, manners and morals, said Time mag- azine. She stands against permissive education and the philosophy of john Dewey and believes in self-expression through self dis- cipline. . The Bukley School began in 1933 when the determined educator, upset by the poor teaching methods in public schools at that time, started with eight students. g Schooled with a unique blend of Australian, English and French teaching methods, she incorporated the best of each into a dis- ciplined educational setting which produces self-confident, well- adjusted and exceptionally talented graduates. The author of College Begins at Two which is published by Abbey Press, Dr.'iBuckley stresses that proper education begins at two when children learn to respect parents and authority. lf Q a child obeys, he respects,' she says. Ii he respects, he loves. For the child to begin the learning process early there must be a consistency of teaching both at home and in the classroom, ac- cording to Dr. Buckley. The success of this novel approach to teaching may be measured by the accomplishments of Buckley graduates. All 53 high school graduates this june will be attending college in the fall. The structure of The Buckley School does not mean play and laugh- ter are excluded. A child who never knows a child's world or the fantasy of play and the joy 'of games rarely matures, she says. He is not aware of what he has lost so his search brings only rest- lessness and often unhappindss for himself and those near to him. A visitor to the school, while observing the uniformdress and respect for elders, notes an attitude of contentment and happiness rarely seen on a public school campus. , . Dr. Buckley is a former syndicated columnist with Publishers Newspaper Syndicate and has written for numerous newspapers and magazines., She was nanied a 1969 Los Angeles Times Woman of the Year and has received an honorary degree from Newton College ofthe Sacred Heart in Boston. l We feel it is an honor to make this award to Dr. Buckley because of her great contributions tol private education, President Banow- sky said. Her concern for qhe total Human-physical, intellectual and spiritual-which so parallels the educational philosophy of Pepperdine is to be commerided. i l x ' V Qin' 'f l:,i:,k7:g jy51-yn ' 4: ,mx ,gm Zgljylqgm ' - :vw-L , MN 7 15, :vi I, :5M.4:k'.51 rx, .I ,M MfY,!.M IF, , ., , . Love knows no limit to its endurance, no end to its trust, no fading of its hope, it can outlast anything. It is, in fact, the one thing that still stands when all else has fallen. You made it possible for me to expand my educa- tion by allowing me to pursue a career in the field in which I am interested while still attending Buckley High School. Al- ways was I able to come to you for conference, advice and understanding. Buckley has been my second home because my family has been closely allied with Buckley for twenty years. Both of my brothers, Bill Isaac and Mark Isaac, attended Buckley and sub- sequently graduated from Buckley High and then U.S.C. I hold high regard for the Buckley School because it insures progress with its fine educational system. It is presently ex- ceptional and it will become even better in the future. Buckley will always remain in my mind as one of the most important con- tributions to my education and fine associations. 62 To my family: I must tell of my intense and immeasurable love and unlimited respect I have for my Mother, and my Father, and my Brothers by expressing my deep feel- ings of appreciation, obligation, respect, thank- fulness, tenderness, devotion, endearment, and attachment I feel toward them. I want to thank them for their continual support in every way, and for all of their constant encouragement and direction. To my classmates: I hope that all of you have a future that is useful, clean, and successful. Each one of you has taught me an important lesson indirectly. Some of you have considered me antisocial. However, always, I must follow mytrained conscience with its good princi- ples, clean morals, and high standards. I live by these since I am obedient to and respect the Most High God and His written word, the Bible. In the finals, Buckley's principal, Dr. Karazissis and Coach Fred Garner defeated celebrities Charleton Heston and Carl Reiner. Proceeds allowed Buckley to resurface both courts to the same playing speed, and to build a much-needed half court practice backboard behind the field court. Coach Garner's team puts emphasis on youth. The tenth grade, nicknamed The Tennis Class , with seven lettermen, contributed fine singles and doubles play by Brian Shear, jamie Baker, Mike Godin, David Crosby, Eric Lyden, Paul Qvale, and Richard Horner. Todd Hunter, ajunior, is the team's third year veteran, while fresh- men Robert Gilley, Maxie Chung and Richard Thies are gaining experience. Buckley fielded a great team with depth and the majority of its members are on the Academic Honor Roll. We should win the Delphic League for the third and final time, as next year we will enter the stronger Pre aratory League, and we are looking forward to this chal- lenge. Again the highlight of our season was our annual flight and weekend to Catalina, where we were the guests of the Catalina Island School at Toyon Bay for a fine match and a tour of Avalon and Catalina Island. The completion of the Pavillion will give us a third court, and embryo plans call for constructing courts over the student parking area, thus giving Buckley first class facilities in this fastest growing of sports. --Coach Fred Garner - u f , - i ,ff- 1,1 ,:s:.f11,11, a PENN S 1976 i ,,.'. As with all creations, one starts out with little more than an idea, and produces some- thing of enduring value. For the past six months, it has been Claudia's and my job to sit down and create, and we have, in spite of lost photos, early deadlines, and inexperience, succeeded in producing what you now hold in your hands, the 'I976 Buckley IMAGES. It is far from perfect, but I am satisfied to say that this book con- tains a large part of me, and that both Claudia and I have finally finished what only a few months ago seemed like an endless and impossible job. I would like to thank several people who have made it easier for both of us: Mrs. Brown, for providing a steady rock in our fits of hyperactivity, Bryan The Mole Winter, Iso named because he spent so much time in the darkroom that he can no longer stand to look at su nlightl for taking and developing the bulk of the photographs in this book, and for putting up with my erratic moods, Brandt Williams for coming through with the sports section and some fantastic layouts, Sue Disney for singlehandedly producing the ad section in this book, Mike Arnone, for silly songs, being late, and lots of reassurance: So what if you're 280 production days behind? I guarantee you'll have your book on timeI And finally, Claudia, for all the lighthearted moments we've shared in producing IMAGES. I would never have been able to do my job efficiently, had these special people not made themselves a part of our yearbook. IMAGES is my last contribution to Buckley, and it has certainly left me changed. I knew virtually nothing about producing a yearbook when I accepted this job. IThere are those who will attest to that even now.J I learned, however, and I hope that this book will have some type of impact on the students, because it is for the students that a yearbook is produced. For the departing seniors, this book represents the final tie with Buckley. If, in looking back on this book in the years to come, it elicits in you a happy memory, a glimpse of something you'd forgotten, or even just a smile, then my job as editor will have been worthwhile. Good-bye and Thank You! -Becky Ranninger The 1976 edition of IMAGES represents an innovation in yearbook production. New styles and techniques bud from these pages. However, the changes in IMAGES result from much more than artistry and novel methods. IMAGES was produced by the dedication of our working staff. We have worked under pressure, but in unity and with grace. Looking back upon the past months of production, I chiefly remember the devotion we have shared in an attempt to make for you the greatest yearbook possible. I sincerely hope that IMAGES will provide you with an anthology of your fondest memories, this has been the desire of Becky and me. My greatest desire, however, is that the quality of 1976 IMAGES reflects the sincere devotion by which we have composed its pages. I would like to thank the following people for their care and dedication to the production of the yearbook: Bryan- Because the bulk of photos in this book are yours, you know what it's like to be a lone photographer . I ealize what a great effort you have put into IMAGES, and l thank you for being so conscientious and dedicated. randt- Thank you for acting so quickly and so thoroughly when the deadline for Sports Pages crept upon you- ou've done QUITE a job! I usan- You have accomplished a great feat. Thank you for handling all the advertising pages single-handedly. rs. Brown- I can hardly believe that you've been able to put up with your co-editors for these past months. hank you for your patience and understanding, and for listening to our ideas. r. Arnone- Your gentle, assuring, and humorous manner has given us boosts of confidence at critical times. e love you for your kindness!!! nd finally, BECKY- Thank your for balancing IMAGES with your paste-ups, montages, and especially your evelations when my ideas wentdry. You gave me the confidence that 1976 IMAGES could meet our expecta- ions. It is with your help that IMAGES has met the quality of our desires. Thank you for EVERYTHING you've one- and for always being there! ll -Claudia Zusman AUTOGRAPHS Courtesy of Dr. and Mrs. Edward Shore Michael, Richard, and Alexa QQ 'M .-1, .,,: K 1'3- HZ .S i vi Zh. - cd .
