We sincerely hope you will enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed editing it. The theme which we have chosen 'for our Annual is modern and timely. With our country 'at war, the most important thing to us at present is the army, navy, and marines so we have chosen the armed forces for our theme, having eachg division of The Oracle represented by some branch of the service. The Senior Class is represented by the navy because one of our class members is already in the navy and some of the other boys are interested in joining the naval force. The administration, which consists of the faculty and the Board of Education, is designated by the air corpsg the teach- ers are always looking ahead for us, similarly the air corps is always scouting ahead of the armed forces. The army being the bulk of the fighting forces is repre- sented by the under classmen, who also make up the greater part of the school enrollment. The activities are the marines. When there's fighting to be done, the marines are always the first to answer the call. The activities are sports, plays, and music--the things that are done in addition to the regular school work. J Q The Statue of Liberty symbolizes everything we stand forg our homes, our friends, and our freedom. Therefore we have chosen it to represent our snapshots. Many people say that school students don't have to worry about the war. This isn't true, we think, as Seniors, this'war means a lot to us. Before the end of this year the boys will be liable to the draft and most of us will be inathe armed forces, so it's our war as much as anyone else's. M YXX1l'iiE'i5X?XX URHELE STHFF TYPISTS W. Many new courses have been cf- fered for the betterment of the student. , rf' To the faculty, board, people of the community, and the students goes the credit of being a men-cr of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The school offers fine- opportunities in music. There is an orchestra and boys' and girls' chorus. There is an up-to- date science department, a well equipped home economics depart- ment and a fine commercial department. The school library con- tains over fourteen hundred volumes and new ones are being added every year. Physical education is a compulsory course. A curricubnmof twenty-seven courses is offe.vQ the seven- ty-eight students attending Buckley Community High Lchool. The new courses offered this year were aeronautics, home economics three, plane geometry, algebra two, Spanish two, and Man and the Motor Car. ' The student body is given a voice in the management of the school through the Student Council. The president and vice- president of each class are the representatives. The president of the Student Council is elected from the Senior Class by the student body. Ervin Janssen received this honor. X 3 ,nl 1, ,hu 1 ,M 5 1 ex Q V. We were as green as the proverbial freshman. Our roll consisted of Gladys Baker, Glenn Dippol, Luella Eckor, Winona Fox, Viola Hilgendorf, Charles Hitz, Ervin Janssen, Marie Janssen, Ruth Johnston, Dorothy Krunviodo, Harold Rust, Irma Rust, Esther Sprehe, Alvin Steiner, Help? Stroup, Norma Wagner, and Edna Weber. At our first class nesting we elected the following class officers: President, Charles Hitzg Vice- President, Winona Fox, Secretary, Ruth Johnstong Historian, Vi0lH Hilgondorfg Student Council members, Marie Janssen and Glenn Dippel. Glenn resigned and Ervin took his place. It was the The first party was out in Ronna's timber. Freshman Reception, and we furnished all of the entertainment. Well, we were really off to a good start when that was over. Later, the Freshman hold a party in the home economics room. Now, we just knew that we could undertake bigjer tasks. At the Halloween Festival our class gave a style show of old dresses. We had some clothini dated back from 1890 to 1940. All of the girls participated in this show. Ervin Janssen read for the show and our sponsor, Miss Dorch, played the piano. 1 b At the end of the first semester Varna Wagner quit school and trensferrodl to Gilman. A day later Edna Bradshaw took her place. This still loft our class with seventeen members. We jumped at anything no could see to bite at, so, we had a skating party at the Isle in March. That was the last of our parties for that yecr. The school year went by very fast, all enjoyed it, and we had no more of that ugreon fresggnn stuff.n . 2 - f 1 X dx .Q Nga., I . i V A N 4 JM i V, ,, ' -at , axe- H - ., 1 .5 . , A -, V , . .. We got a good beginning by elect- ing the following class officers: President, Ruth Johnston, Vice-President, Harold Rustg Secretary-Treasurer, Winona Foxg Historian, Marie Janssen, Student Council members, Glenn Dippel and Dorothy Krumwiede. We still had seventeen members in the class. Miss Naseef, was our class sponsor. At the Halloween Festival, our class gave a play, UThn Ghost in the Green Gown.n Ruth Jeisaton, Edna Weber, Dorothy Krumwiede, Viola Hilgendorf, Winer Wax, and Marie Janssen put the play over with a lot of success, fe had put on our first real stage performance and were ore A,V..s ared for most anything from here on. So, in the athletic plays we gaveu a one act play called UClose Courtingu. Those taking part in'this were, Ruth Johnston, Ervin Janssen, Winona Fox, Charles Hitz, Edna Weber, Harold Rust, and Esther Sprehe. A Our class sponsored two school parties. A skatiny party at the Isle, and F Valentine party in the gym. We always pre- forred school pfrties to class parties. Was there any special reason I wonder? Well, everyone left that sophomore year looking forward to the Junior year which was suppose to be really exciting. Everyone was anxious for this junior year to roll around when we were to do a lot of planning and work, anyway that is the conclusion the other classes drew after they left. We al- ways were a class to get things done a little ahead of time. So, the seventeen members rushed out to a good beginning this year. The following were elected class officers: Gladys Bake er, President, Ralph Stroup, Vice-President, Viola Hilgendorf, Secretary-Treasurer, Edna Weber, Historian, Winona Fox and Har- old Rust, Student Council members. e About two weeks after school started, Wayne Schwartz came back to Buckley to make our class number 18. Mr. Heller was our class sponsor, until he went to the army, and then Mrt Gehlc had to coach that last month out. V . ...Y-....-V ww- --f V ---,-f- -------- ----v--'- V- ---'W -v ' W yr '-wry' During the year we put on one of the best plays ever given in this community. The nzeze of ,it was Don't Darlcen My Door . The characters vere Marie Janssen, Winona Fox, Dorothy Krum- uicde, Viola Hilgendorf, Edna Weber, Ralph Stroup, Harold Rust, and Ervin Janssen. Ve had great hopes for the play which turned out very profitable. The Banquet was held at the Hiddlccoff Hotel in Paxtona The menu consisted of Fruit Cup, Swiss Steak with creole sauce Baked Potatoes, Creamed Asparagus, Spring Salad, Rolls, Butter, Pineapple Upside Down Cake A la Mode, and Iced Tea. Ervin Janssen was master of ceremonies. Everyone cane but Bill Copas and his reason is still indifinitc. During the year we put out some good school papers. It consisted mostly of gossip, but there isn't a student in school that doesn't enjoy reading every word of it. We were also placed in charge of food sales at the Halloween Festival. We put on a little act on the stage too that Uasnft worth what we charged for it, but then people bit and ue cleared a neat little sum. This year some of the juniors purchased class rings. An- other important event was the selling of candy at basketball games. We also sold pop-corn, xhich usually get us into trou- bleg The room we popped it in is what paused most of the trou- ble, because we never did clean it up. We gave Hr. Heller a good send off with a farevell party given for him by our class at a show in Onarga. Later, me ate at the Coffee Shop. This finished our hectic junior year as far as important events were concerned. Of course, there was a little griping about exams and things, but then you just could not expect seventeen people to be satisfied all of the time. We all thought that our junior year ras n :edulous one, but the last year sure is a lot worse. Host of the time we can't tell if we are going or coming, but at present we defin- itely knou that we are going. X -A ,,.V.,VF ,,.r- ,I Our last year is here and it is whizzing by so fast, we hardly realize that we're soon to graduate. Our first under- taking, was the election of officers. We got a good start by electing Ralph Stroup, Presidentg Winona Fox, Vice-Presidentg Marie Janssen, Secretary-Treasurerg Ruth Johnstong Historian. The president and vice-president are the student council mem- bers. - Ervin Janssen is president of the student council, obtain- ing the highest honor any student f 1 receive. We have a good administration under Ervin's sup: -7.1. He has also been chosen editor of the annual. We picked out our invitations and name cards, and decided on caps and gowns, blue with white collars and tassels of scar- let and white. Our class colors are scarlet and white. Ruth Johnston was given the D. A. R. pin this year: Mr. Terrill is our class sponsor. He came back this year to help us with our many confrontinf problems. During our four years at school vo had seven class sponsors. We always knew we were quite a class, but not exactly that bad. One realizes the danger in a thing like that when it comes to the last half sem- ester. The Senior class sponsored an exciting freshman reception at the beginning of the year. We have had only one class par- ty. This was a sleigh ride. J. L. Copas joined our class to see of what assistance he could be. Bill Copas left for the navy at the end of the sem- ester. We feel honored to be a class with one of our members in the armed forces. We hate to leave high school, even though we've done a lot of griping about everything and anything. Everyone is going to be out on his own, and we're all going to regret the f:cz that we won't be able to join the activities in the fall. so, we leave school carrying away a lot of msnories that we will never forget. A good many things have happened since I last saw you. We met at good old Buckley High. Since it was to be an all day affair, we started about eight-thirty in the morning. Everyone hurried to get here. Cool drinks were furnished by the cafe operator, Harold Rust. Ruth and Edna had a wonderful time because the four bachelors came back. This is the information we gathered of all the classmates. Gladys Baker married Chuck Hitz and they X' are living in Hammond, Indiana. They have two sets of twins. Gladys is be- hind the stove making chili for her husband. It present Chuck is Head of the World Court. Edna Lou Bradshaw at present is a WAVE and is cruising the South Seas. J. L. He has a girl in- every port and can't make up his mind, but he'll undoubtedly go back to Kentucky to get the girl of hi dreams. at Glenn Dippel is still a bachelor. He has made several trips out East, but decided Buckley is the garden spot of Amer- ica. B Luella Ecker and Esther Sprehe are operating a junk yard in Buckley. their hopes are high. This is an annual event, and it has been very successful every year. f . The play was full of rip-roaring comedy. Bruiser Barnes was the body guard who just about became the greet boxing champion. Everyone held his breath when Bruiser camo on the -1 0 -v 1- I 1 stage, because they oidn't know what he was going to Q0 or say next. But the most excitement of all was when the Phfntom ap- peered on the stage. The audience didn't know who he was going to reach out and grab next. It had been the custom for the seniors to under take this obligation, but this year the decision could not be made whether a -staff should be picked from the four classes, the student council, or the senior class. After a lot of thought and consideration the class again undertook the task. A staff was then picked, and work on the annual wa: immediately begun. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is the student ?,f 's representation in the governing of the school. There a- 'fine n mbers, two from each class- From the senior class Li' president of the Student Council is elected by popular vote 'sch fall and serves for one school year as do the other members. The class repre- sentatives are the president and vice-president of every class. In former years it had been the policy of the classes to elect members holding no other office to the Student Council, but this year Mr. Gehle asked that the president and vice-president serve because he believed it would give the council the best school citizens. The vice-president and secretary of the gtu- dent Council are elected by the council. f SOTQOHORE PARTY Last semester a contest was started to see which class would buy the most war bonds and stamps. The class buying the most would be awarded a party given them by the other three classes. At first the seniors were ahead but the juniors and sophomores soon passed them. The sophomores won the contest by a large margin. The final amounts were: sophomores, Q45Ol.6Og juniors, Ql686.95j seniors, 3985.053 and freshmen, QQOQQOS. The party was held on March 5, 1945. L scball League since it was orpanized in 1957. They took championship the first fall and again in the spring of '58, Then Leda took the championship from us. We beat Leda that fall, but we had lost to several other schools and that gave it to them.
