There were twenty-one in all. Under the excellent supervision of Miss Margery Culver we soon became accustomed to the school and its surroundings. After eight years of hard studying we advanced to high school. This proved to be quite different from the grades. We entered our Freshman year with twenty one students. Our class advisor was Mr. Leatherman. In September we were initiated by the Seniors. This proved to be quite comical to everyone but us. The class officers were: President, Betty Lou Danielsg Vice-President, Virginia Ramgag Secretary, Darlene Smithg Treasurer, Beverly Sawmillerg News Reporter, JoAnna Ziegenbuschg Student Council, Norma Ruth Brookhart and Bob Sunderland. We began our Sophomore year with ten girls and fourteen boys, Unfortunately during the year Darlene Smith was stricken with polio and had to leave school. Also Donnie Witham moved to Lima where he entered Lima South High School. Betty Wycuff also withdrew from our class shortly after school began. The class officers were as follows: President, Jim Morgang Vice-President, Darlene Smith: Secretary, Dorothy Hagerg Treasurer, Faye Dingledine: Student Council, Norma Ruth Brookhart and Valgene Phillips. Many of us took part in the operetta, band concert, and Christmas program. Many of the boys participated very actively in basketball and baseball. We started our Junior year with nineteen pupils. However, Everett Bradford dropped out before the year was completed. In September we went on a one day trip with the Seniors to the London Prison Farm, Ft. Ancient, and John Bryan State Park. On November 3, after working very hard we successfully presented our class play, We Shook The Family Tree . We were very proud of our class rings which we received on November 14, 1950. We sold refreshments at the basketball games and did various other things to raise funds so we could honor the Seniors with a banquet on May 11. We all felt that it was well worth our time and effort. Mr. Brackney was our sponsor and helped us immensely with our prom and class play. The onicers for the year were as follows: President, Valgene Phillips, Vice President, Jim Howard, Secretary, Jerry Tangeman, Treasurer, Betty Daniels, Student Council, David Lambert and Freddie Miller. Several of the Juniors in the Bookkeeping Class journeyed to Ohio State University Campus where they took a National Bookkeeping Test. We sold magazines for two weeks and received a reward for selling the most magazines. As we entered our Senior year there were eighteen of us in all. Under the capable guidance and leadership of Mr. Geiger we made our final year in school a very successful one. Our class ofiicers for the year were: President, Jim Morgang Vice President, Jerry Tangemang Secretary, Jim Howard? Treag- urer, Valgene Phillipsg Student Council, David Lambert and Ronnie Sprague. On October 12, 1951, the Juniors and Seniors took a trip to Southern Ohio. Here we visited Old Man's Cave and the Rock House. We also sponsored two roller skating parties which turned out to be very successful. This year we sold refreshments at the basketball games to raise funds for our Senior Trip to which we are all looking forward. On April 18 we presented our class play, Grandpa Goes To College . On April 25 we jour- neyed to Pike County State Forest and spent the week end there. We all had a very enjoyable and exciting trip. May 8, is a date long to be remembered by the Seniors. This was the evening on which the Juniors honored us with a very colorful reception. We enjoyed and appreciated it very much. Our Baccalaureate Services were held on May ll, at the Buckland Congregational Christian Church with Rev. Carl Miller otiiciating. Our twelve years of hard studying were climaxed by our Commencement Exercise on May 15th. The commencement address was delivered by Dr. Harvey C. Hahn. Our class has participated in a large variety of school activities. Among them are basketball, band, F. F. A., Class Plays, and many others. Now as our school years are fast coming to an end we will remember many of the interesting exper- iences that we had and they will live in our memory for a long time. Our Senior trip will probably be the one last time that we shall all be together. This trip will take us to Washington, D. C. and New York City' -Jim Morgan 'wi' Dallas Dale Fox 4sTeX77 F. F. It was the spring of 1962, and, after teaching school in Hawaii for three years, I was going home for the summer. I was to sail home on the S. S. Buckland, named for the village, after it became known all over the nation, when the senior class of l952 caused a traffic jam in New York City while having an argument in the middle of Times Square. After the ship had set sail, I decided to go to the ship's beauty parlor and have my hair fixed. I was very shocked when Faye Dingledine appeared to fix my hair. She and I relived our school day experiences, and then I took a little stroll on the deck. I had been told that passengers could go down on the bottom deck and watch the navigation of the ship, so I went down. As I watched the navigator I thought he looked familiar to me, and after watching him long enough, I realized that it was Bob Sunderland. After a short talk with him, I went to the railing to watch the water being stirred up by the ship. I was standing near three crew members who were talking to the skipper of the ship. When I haerd them mention Buckland, I thought nothing of it, but that they were speaking of the vessel, until they mentioned their old school days. I took a closer look. and believe it or not, found them to be David Lambert. Fred Miller, Darrell Wilges, and Dallas Fox. I told them of my other findings and questioned them as to whether or not it could be arranged to have a party on the ship to celebrate. They suggested that I see the commander or admiral, so I set out to find them. but my plans were disrupted when I suddenly became very seasick. After lying in my cabin for a while and getting no relief. I went to the drug store to buy some medicine, When I walked up to the counter there was none other there behind it than Alice Wagner. I told her my troubles and she recommended that I forget the drug store medicine and go to the sick bay. I took her advice, and who do you think took care of me when I got there? Why, of course, JoAnna Ziegenbusch, the ship's head nurse. She soon had me feeling much better. CI think it was the talk we had of our past rather than the medicine she gave me.b By this time it was time to eat, so I went to one of the dining rooms and ordered my lunch. When the waitress brought me my lunch I suddenly carrie to the realization that she was another old classmate, Beverly Sawmiller. She didn't have time to talk then, so after making arrange- ments to see her later, I settled down and began to enjoy my lunch, when the orchestra leader announced that the next number had been requested by someone in the audience. When they began to play Mary Lou I immediately became suspicious and began to look around. Sure enough, just two tables away was Valgene Phillips and his wife who were touring the world after establishing a large dairy farm in Ohio. By now I was thinking that the party was a necessity rather than a novelty, so I set out on my search again. They were easily found, and you can imagine how surprised I was when the admiral turned out to be Jim Howard, and the commander Ronnie Sprague. A third shock was that Dorothy Hager was Ronnie's private secretary. She informed me that her husband, Jim Morgan, was the head engineer of the ship. They were all three highly in favor of my plan and Dorothy made arrangements for us to use the best ball room that evening. I had secured the room number of all my classmates I had met before that day, so they were easily contacted. I decided that such a coincidental and important occasion deserved pictures and a write up in the Whitefeather , the ship's newspaper, so I went to see the editor, whom I found to be Betty Lou Daniels. She was thrilled with the plans and guaranteed me her best reporter and photographer. She said I'd better sit down before she brought them in, and I soon knew why, when the photographer whom she brought in was Walter Spees and the reporter, Jerry Tangeman. This completed the Senior Class, and the party was a gigantic success with everyone present. But you may be sure that it wasn't the last one we had before the Statue of Liberty came into sight, not to mention the many informal visits and talks of good old Buckland High . -By Norma Brookhart fm, 'Ove i' X-'ff xv--if Beulah Faye Dingledine Dingle Chorus 1-2. WGJIV 2 309 THE COMMUNITY RECREATION CLUB October, 1950, was the first month of a very new project for Buckland and Athletics. There was formed the Community Recreation Club for the purpose of sponsoring and offering to the people of the surrounding territory the privilege of participating in athletics or watching those that participate. This was a great step forward for the people and the community, and thus far we have helped to make available a park for picnickers, ball grounds for ball games and spectators. and horse shoe pitching for those that enjoy the sport. Not all has been done because the plans are still incomplete, but as the years progress, we rest assured that this park area will increase in use, improve- ment, facilities, and importance to all in the Buckland Community. Support your Community Recreation Club! OFFICERS 1951-52 1952-53 Bill Link President Sam Chrismer, President Glenn A. Geiger, Jr., Secretary Glenn A.
