V -H -f-q'r-1----f---- SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1959, twenty-six eager first graders came to school for the flrst tlme. Everything was new and strange and some of us were fright- ened a little, but under the careful guidance of Miss Margery Culver, we soon overcame our fears. Eight years later, having completed grade school,,we had learned many things. However, we found high school quite different from our prevlous school years. When we entered our Freshmen year, our number had dwindled to twelve. Our class advisor was Miss Mary Alice Beeler. The class officers for this year were : President, Jack Springer: Vice-President, Grace Puschel: Sec- retary-Treasurer, Carolyn Hager: Reporter, Jenelle Stoner, Student Council, Wilma Barrett and Don Steveley. In September we were initiated by the Sen- iors. Our one social event of the year was a leap year party held in the school auditorium. The same twelve students who had begun high school together began the Sophomore Year- Early in the year Jlm Holtzapple left the class to Join the Navy. Mary Evelyn Howell from Neptune entered in January. Mr. John Mowbray served as our class advisor this year. Our class officers were: President, Don Steveleyg Vice-President, Jenelle Stonerg Secretary-Treas- urer, Grace Puschel: Reporter, Eula Ann Dcerlngg Student Council, Carolyn Hager and B111 Davidson., On January 25, 1948, we presented a three act play, WThrough The Keyhole.' This was an unusual undertaking for Sopho- mores, but the play was a success. We entered our Junior year with our number unchanged. This year there was much activity. With the help of our class advisor, Mlss Beulah Jones, the year was a successful one. On October 15, 1949, the Juniors and Sen- lcrs took a trip to southern Ohio. We visited Ash Cave, Rock House, Old Man's Cave, Cantwell Cliffs, and Conkel's Hollow. Our class play, 'Quit Your K1dd1ng,W was successfully presented on October 21, 1949. We received our class rings, of which we are still quite proud, around Thanksgiving. We sponsored a roller skating Partyand sold refreshments at.the home bas- ketball games the last half of the year to raise money for the class treas- ury. After much effort, we succeeded in turning the school auditorium into an Oriental Garden for the Junlor-Senior banquet which was presented on May 5, 1949. Our class officers this year were: President, Eula Ann Doer- ingg Vice-President, Bill Davidson, Secretary, Mary Evelyn Howell: Treasur- er, Jenelle Stoner, Reporter, Wilma Barrett, Student Council, Carolyn Hager and Don Steveley. Upon entering our Senior year, we numbered twelve Just as ln previous years. Our class officers were: President, Don Steveleyg Vice-President, Wilma Barrett: Secretary, Carolyn Hager: Treasurer, Jenelle Stoner: Student Council, Grace Puschel and James Wells. Our class advisor for the first semester was Mr. Kenneth Crim, and the second semester Mr. Glenn Geiger was 01888 advisor. The Juniors and Seniors took their annual trip on September 25, 1950. We visited the London Prison Farm, John Bryan State Park, and Fort Ancient. This year the Juniors and Seniors together sold refreshments at the home basketball games. We presented our class play, 'Half Past Teen,' on April 15, 1951. We journeyed to Pike County State Forest on April 20th, and spent the weekend there. This trip was enjoyed by everyone. On May llth, the Juniors honored us with a reception which we appreciated very much. Our Baccalaureate Services were held on May 15th at the Buck- land Congregational Christian Church with the Rev. C. C. Ryan officiating. Our high school days were climaxed with our Commencement exercise on May 17th. The commencement address was delivered by Dr. C. E. Wintringham. Although our class is small, our few members have participated ln a wide variety of school actlvltles such as band, chorus, F.F.A., 'Pioneer' staff, baseball, and basketball. We have participated in Christmas pro- grams, band concerts, chapel programs, school carnivals and two cperettas, WThe Sunbcnnet Girl' and HTop O' The World'. Now the Class of 1951 will soon be leaving Buckland High School. Al- though gur school days are rapidly drawing to a close, we will relive them many times ln memory. The entire class will be together once more. We are looking forward to this event, our Senior trip, which will take us to Wash- lnton, D.C., New York City, and Niagara Falls. While on my way home, I started thinking about my classmates of 1951. If I could see them again, I would be better off than running around astray. I started out from Wright Field at Dayton, Ohio, with a Bonanza plane. Because of my career, I could hire a plane for my use. I took off from the field and headed for the little town of Buckland where I had hung out for twelve years. The closest place that I could find to land around this town was a farm of Bill Davidson's. I landed in a large field and walked to the house. I was surprised to find that Carolyn Hager answered the door. After talking awhile, I found that B111 and Carolyn were married and had two nice looking children. B111 had been farming his dad's place since graduating from high school. Because of the late time that I arrived, I stayed over- night with the happy famlly. Early the next morning I headed for southeastern Ohio. While flying high over the hills, I discovered a huge building that had Jack Spr1nger's Shepherd Deisel Expermental Farm printed on lt. I landed in a large field and taxled to Jack's barn. I talked to him for over an hour and found he was in the business for himself. I left him with a hand shake and took off for Detroit. I landed at Detro1t's Municipal Airport and asked for gas. I was surprised to find Don Steveley driving a tank-truck for the government. He had been working at this business for four and one half years, and he said he may keep on driving until he I'91i11'95- I asked Don if he had heard from Ted and he told me he was stationed at San Diego, California. Since I had never been in the state of California, I left Don at his business and head- Gd west. After three days of lonesome flying, I arrived at the Navy Base where Ted Elsass was stationed. I found him cleaning the guns of his Panther Jet but he stopped to talk to me. He had been with the Navy for a year and a half and was waiting for his discharge papers. I soon took off toward home by way of Phoenix, Arizona, which I had always wanted to see. With a days rest I started on my last lap home but was rudely stopped over Indiana with motor trouble. I landed in a field just out of a small town. While walking into town I ran upon a tourist motel with a propr1etor's name of Wilma Jean Barrett. I stayed over night in one of W1lma's fine houses for a small fee. The next morning I fixed my plane's motor and took off for Indianapo- lis, Indiana. After landing, I walked through the main business district. I passed a store and saw Imogene Ramga standing in a dress shop doorway. I found that she was the owner of Imogene's Style Shop. She told me that I would find Mary Evelyn Howell and Grace Puschel up the street a few blocks running a Sweet Shop. I stopped at this swell smelling candy house and saw Grace behind the counter. She called Mary and we talked over the counter about this and that. They told me where to find Eula Ann Doering, so the next day I took off for Cleveland, Ohio. I landed in Cleveland and took a taxi to one of the high schools where I could find Eula Ann. I took Eula Ann from one of her English classes so I couldn't talk to her too long. I left and took off for Wright Field, but as I was landing I thought about one more girl in my class. It was the one who always sat in front of me in all our classes. Her name was Jenelle Stoner. My wonders about not seeing her in my travels were soon over. As I walked into the flight room, I saw a short blonde girl behind a desk and type writer. Yes, it was Jenelle. She said she had just begun this Job of stenographer and book- keeper at Wright Field. After paying her my dues and taxes I headed back to the Navy. My trip had taken all of my three month's vacation, so the Navy met me with open arms once more Jim Wells 28 X I lgxgmixs C X A, ., M-.. --n.-.. .,,,.,M 5 V jf 'f lm 13111 X lmm T S I Ln Q N ii The Senior Claes play, 'Half Past 'Teen,' was presented on April 13, 1951. The story of the play is as follows: Teen ape girls are really something, and Candy Norton, with the doubtful help of her friend, Sugar, is no exception. Ca dy is putting forth all her efforts to win the Service Club Scholar- ship. This would be a snap if it were just being the best stu- dent, but this 1sn't the case as school politics are mixed up in it in the form of Lois, who has everyone on her side. Candy's troubles are mounting by the moment and it looks like that scholarship was just a pleasant pipe dream, when, Bingo --There is a knock on the door, and in walk two characters from nOut West? At the Farmers' Insti- tute we displayed pies, cakes, cookies, and other foods we had prepared. Senior home economics was a course in advanced sewing. Dur- ing the year we made aprons, taffeta or wool dresses, corduroy Jackets, and several other things. We also learned how to use the attachments for the sewing machine including the new button- holer. We are all very grateful to Miss Blesecker, for teaching us how to do so many things. We are sure the knowledge we have ac- quired will be very useful to us. 63 . 5' P' ou., Hegre Just Ball ' I' ,i thu V f ., f 3 ' f ,., W .-'31 Drvvfy Freshmen 15,914 WFP! , 9 ' I ovfcltl 6 Garlg Hate' Nature Boy 61' sun: U-vhuvs dunlfcrs H auth: ful Ioafnn n Pre, VZSSIVC Q .
