The Tollowing summer I Took up nurse's Training aT The Deaconess I-lospiTaI, CincinnaTi. T-laving been TaughT a greaT deal abouT The diseases which exisT and Their origin, I decided, aTTer one year oT Training, ThaT research work in This line would be oT some beneTiT, noT only To myseIT buT To oTher members oT my class. Making an exTensive invesTigaTion as To where I should go, I Tinally decided ThaT The NighTin- gale ExperimenT I-lome was besT suiTed Tor Tur- Thering my work. This home was devoTing iTs work and Time Tor The beneTiT oT humaniTy, by Trying To Tind some means oT curing so-called incurable diseases. While riding on a Train To Nebraska, The loca- Tion oT The home, I was scanning Through a maga- zine, when I saw a humorous carToon which drew my aTTenTion. Reading The inTerpreTed meaning oT The picTure, I saw Darrell BinkIey's name as The carToonisT Tor The ATlanTic Magazine pub- lished by RuTh Burmrield. Leaving The Train aT The Union STaTion, I Took a Taxi To The ExperimenT I-Iome. I was given The privilege oT waTching an experimenT perTormed upon a dog ThaT had Tuberculosis. AT TirsT glance, I recognized ThaT John I-IoITzappIe was The docTor, and ThaT his assisTanT was Lois KaT- Terheinrich, now a nurse. Leaving Nebraska, I Took a Train back To Chi- cago To The unsaniTary slum disTricT. WiTh The help oT The docTors There, we were able To dis- cover The cause oT The mosT prevaIenT diseases. One morning, while riding in a Taxi To The Li- brary oT Research, we passed The NorThwesTern UniversiTy. While gazing over The campus, I saw a Tigure walking Toward The Science Build- ing. This Tigure was easily disTinguished as BeTTy Place, now Training To become a school Teacher. The Library oT Research proved To be very helpTul. While reading a very inTeresTing book on science in research Today, The librarian came over To ask iT she could be oT any assisTance. Imagine my surprise aT seeing Wain Bodkin be- Tore me. ATTer a guieT chaT, in which we recalled memories oT our school days, I reTurned To my hoTeI. JusT as I was going To enTer, who should conTronT me, buT Gerald Wheeler. I-Iaving asked as To his posiTion, I Tound he was managing a cIoThing sTore in Monroe, Michigan. I-Ie hap- pened To be here on a visiT. Wishing To visiT a hair dresser, I looked in a Telephone book To Tind The IocaTion oT a beauTy parlor. Reading The names in alphabeTicaI or- der, I Tound This inscripTion. WaITher's I3eauTy Salon, WesT ForTy-second STreeT. My imagi- naTion seemed To wander back To one oT my class- maTes. IT proved To be True when June WaITher greeTed me aT The door. Since iT was mid-aTTernoon, I had Time To visiT The ExperimenT Farm. I had Tound in my read- ing ThaT some diseases had developed Trom in- secT hazards. As I was riding along This Tarm I saw a man plowing corn. Driving up To The Tence. I was going To inquire as To The manager, when suddenly someone spoke To me in a somewhaT coarse voice. I immediaTeIy Turned around To look aT no oTher Than CroTT Kellerman. Inquir- ing as To The crop roTaTion, I Tound ThaT many insecTs had been broughT Trom Toreign counTries To kill oTT The more Troublesome pesTs. These insecTs carried wiTh Them malarial diseases. Be- Tore I could conTinue my mission There was an inTerrupTion by anoTher person who came Trom The Tield. IT was Frederick I3urnTieId, who was in parTnership wiTh CroTT in The ExperimenT Farm. My unexpecTed visiT wiTh my Buckland I-ligh classmaTes was now coming To a close, Tor I re- Tired To The Union STaTion To Take a Train Tor home. In The Tar disTance, I heard The whisTIe oT The approaching Train. When iT pulled inTo The sTa- Tion and sTood aT resT, The engineer approached me, wiTh a smile and a very Tamiliar, I-leIIo, Tor iT was none oTher Than Rowland Link. Leaving Chicago behind, I was willing To re- Turn To Take up advanced sTudy in nurse's re- search work. I-Iaving Tound my cIassmaTes progressed In Their search Tor TruTh and wisdom, I happily close my sTory OT labor and deeds well done, OT Trials and baTTIes won. -Berneice Elsass.

Tl-TE WI-IITEFEATI-TER CLASS ln fhe fall of fhe year l925, fhe doors of fhe Buckland School opened, and a group of wide-eyed youngsfers, eager fo learn fo read and wrife, enfered and be- gan fheir school career. To mosf of you fhis is nofhing special, since if is iusf a yearly occurrence, buf in our memory if will sfand ouf as our firsf day af school. Affer eighf years of sfudy, fhis group enfered fheir firsf year of high school. Oh no, nof all of fhose who had enfered in '25. Some had leff fheir imaginafions wander and, only seeing fhe brighf side of life, decided fo disconfinue fheir school days. We feel confidenf fhaf fhe class of '37 consisfing of fhe persons who had cours age and could foresee fhaf in fhe fufure fhey would be benefifed by confinuing fheir schooling, will, in one way or anofher be rewarded for fheir efforfs needed fo gain an educafion. Even fhough small in number, fhe class has fried in every way fo raise fhe sfand- ards sef up by fhose who have gone ahead. We have been represenfed in mosf' of fhe school acfivifies including: baslcefball, glee club, orchesfra, shop clubs, dramafics, and fhe paper sfaff. We have worked hard fo malce our class plays successful, which has been improving each year. The class-chosen moffo, Up The Lad- der Sfep By Sfep is well suifed fo fhe class. ln order fo build fhis ladder, we reguired fhe use of fools. These fools l-HSTGRY were represenfed by fhe faculfy and ofhers, who have faifhfully sfood by us when we were discouraged and greafly needed fheir influence. Now fhaf we are passing from fhe guiding hands of fhese people, if will be necessary for fhe indi- vidual fo decide whefher he will go on and force his way a sfep higher, remain on his presenf level, or gradually decline fo a level we have passed fhrough our rise fo our presenf sfanding. lf would be well if we all could rise sfeadily higher and higher. Amid fhe happy remembrances of our school days fhere will always be a sad fhoughf caused by fhe facf, fhaf, of fhe fwenfy-fhree people who enfered high school, only fwelve are going fhrough fhe graduafion exercises.
