611155 Prophecy A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE On one sultry afternoon 1 Sat for awhlle gazmg over the plctures of my beloved classmates and began to reahze that the class of 53 was about to pass forever from the walls of dear old Buckland Hlgh Then the deslre to flnd out just what my classmates would be dolng flfteen years hence suddenly sexzed me Whlle pondermg over thls a llttle fa1ry mystemously stood before me In my lap she placed a lamp and some handkerchmefs Thls my ch1ld 15 a wonderful lamp If you touch mt w1th thxs wand and look through the handkerchrefs rt wrll roll back the curtams of the future and show you what the future of your classmates 1s to be Before I was able to thank her she had dmsappeared just as mystermously as she had appeared I was eager to know the future of my classmates so I touched the lamp and looked through the flrst handkerchlef Ah there appeared before me four damty nurses dressed ln mmmaculate un1forms The pxcture was a l1ttle dlm and I had to take a second look to be sure Yes they were my own classmates Rosa Matthews Doll1e Roberts Lxllran Hmton and Vlrgmla Dotson who were servmg as nurses ln the Llncoln Hospxtal Durham North Carollna The second handkerchlef was larger than the fxrst and I was even more eager to take a look at the future through xt As I gazed I saw a Junk yard full of worn out cars There were three men busy at work and all three looked very famxlmar As one turned to say somethmg to h1s helper I recogmzed them none other than Charlle Roberts Calvm Plland and Henry Bond who owned themr own garage mn Wmdsor N C and were the best mechanlcs ln Bertxe County As I looked through the thlrd handkerchlefl saw a large bulldmg Why xt was a convent A faxr lady dxsappomted IH some love affaxr had become a nun and had devoted her lmfe to gomg about domg good m all the world She was now called Smster Annetta I managed to see her face It was my dear old classmate Margle Boone The fourth handkerchlef was very pretty It was whlte wlth blue borders I saw through lt a beautl ful theatre As the curtalns were rarsed for the fxrst act of the drama Love Entanglements the llttle heroxne of the drama looked strangely famllmar I took a second look a llttle gesture of the head revealed Emma Hall my own classmate She was truly an actress and was holdmg the audxence spellbound Through the next handkerch1efI saw an mmmense blllboard What dld xt say'? A Second Kxng Cole GREATEST SINGER OF THE DAY WILL APPEAR AT THE APOLLO THEATRE I Could hardly beheve my eyes for the pmcture appearlng on the blllboard was that of my old classmate Alfonzo Harrell The next three handkerchxefs seemed to chng together I took them up at once and aw three house wwes exchangmg confldences over the fence as to th1s or that domestlc dlfflculty No Classmates not even marrxage had parted these glrls who were so mseparable mn school Emma Eure Evelyn Hoffler and Sarah Sprulll The next handkerchlef was whmte wlth holes m 1t As I held Lt before my eyes I saw a beautxful school There stood a woman lecturmng to a group of students Although she was older ln years I soonrecognlzed her by her smlle Yes Mary Frances Bowser and she was teachmg mathematlcs atT S Cooper Hlgh School As I gazed through the tenth handkerch1ef whlch was large and made of fme lmen I saw a professor standmg before h1s class It was a class of boys They were dressed 1n basketball togs He was demon stratmg plays to them on the blackboard One boy asked a quest1on What dxd he call h1m Professor Dmldy' Yes lt was none other than Elwood Dlldy now Sc1ence teacher and Coach at B H Before I could take the handkerchmef from my eyes another room appeared About thrrty glrls were s1tt1ng at typewr1ters and the llttle lady glvlng lnstructlons was Dorothy Locke How happyl was to know that she was teachmg commer c1alclasses at dear old B H The eleventh handkerchxef was smlk wrth pretty flowers mn mt One look and I saw a modern beauty shop Mae Alrce Beale and Rachel Hurdle were busy at work It was thelr own shop and they were the best beautm c1ans mn Corapeake North Carolma My curmosmty was aroused more than ever when I plcked up the next handkerchlef for lt was a red ban danna As I held mt before me I saw a small whlte bumldmg The slgn over the door attracted my attentlon Harvey R1dd1ck Veter1nar1an Horses And Cows A Speclalty Yes he was a successful old horse doctor and was domg well m the l1ttle town of Hertford N C The last handkerchlef was plam whlte and small As soon as I looked through mt I saw a lmttle whmte cottage and on the porch sat an elderly lady patchmg her husband s overalls Oh no th1s couldn t be true' Surely there must be some mlstake I shut my eyes and then opened them for a second look Y es mt wasmy own plcture Dorothy Hoffler I was happ1ly marrled and lwmg IH Ahoskle North Carolma Wmth a heart swelllng wrth prlde for my classmates I leaned back mn my chamr and closed my eyes The famry who had stood before me qulckly re appeared and snatchedthe handkerchxefs and maglc lamp from my lap and suddenly d1sappeared Classmates the farry s duty IS at an end and the future for us IS an open book May each of us fol low famthfully the paths marked out for our footsteps and so make our lwes the glorlous success the fates have decreed that they are to be DOROTHY HOFFLER EMMA HALL Class of '53 3 . , , , . 11 A - - - - 1 - 1 - 1 - - - - 11 , . , . - 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 - 1 - 1 . , -- 1 1 1 1 - . . , . 11 - 11 . . . , . . .
