And as my fingers pressed it, still It moved and yielded to my will. I came again when days were past; The list of clay was hard at last. The form I gave it still it bore, And I could fashion it no more. I took a piece of living clay, And gently pressed it day by day, And molded with my power and art A young child ' s soft and yielding heart. I came again when years had gone: It was a man I looked upon, He still that early impress bore, And I could fashion it no more. Anonymous ' of he Library of Virginia :ichmond VA FOREWORD 2 CONTENTS Juniors Page 33 3 We , the Senior Class of Buckingham Central High School, dedicate this, the Sixty- three Buccaneer, to OUR PARENTS. We owe this honor to them more than anyone else. They have been the sculptors; we, the clay. Through their continuous efforts and numerous sacrifices, they have begun to mold the statue of our lives. They have given to us the opportunities to be- come useful citizens and have instilled in us the highest possible standards — physi- cally, morally, mentally, and spiritually. They have put forth their very best in molding our lives through example and counsel. We will honor OUR PARENTS by continually striving for perfection. This dedi- cation is our way of saying M We love and appreciate these patient, faithful sculptors —OUR BELOVED PARENTS. Administration As a sculptor depends on tools to achieve perfection, so must we. The faculty and administration are tools to help us achieve our education. Division Superintendent Irving S. Ready to play- -not too anxious to learn, But determined to be the best or die ! We weren ' t the best, but we didn ' t quit, We kept giving it another try. We ' d show the Seniors we were Somebody, We ' d get used to our wings and fly. The first two years were a bit of a struggle. There seemed to be SO much to learn. Through tests and exams we somehow struggled, We had a place at Central to earn! By the time we reached our Sophomore year, We felt we had gained great strides. Biology, Latin and Algebra 2 Were pounded into our hides. Remember Tom Sawyer , our Junior Play, Aunt Polly, Huck and the rest? It was a big success- -no one could deny Our best was REALLY the best! Who could forget our Hawaiian Prom-- A magic night for us all ! Each boy a Prince Charming- -Each girl a Cinderella At that wonderfully enchanted ball. All things sometime must come to an end. This must be true of our school days-- Each must go out to meet life alone, Each must go in separate ways. Not one of us shall ever forget Our days at Central High. Each of us leave better prepared To meet our Maker by and by. F,or not only have we received an education, We have learned to live with our fellow- men We have only to apply what we have learned- - Go to meet Life and go to WIN! Remember each day brings another chance, Don ' t ever give up your fight. Assistant Editor Assistant Business Assistant Art Typist Typist Linda Goode Manager Editor Macy Gormus Gloria Steger Pat Sprouse Winnie Bryant Class Prophecy Impatiently, I pushed the revolving door before me, Oh, dear, I have so much to do --shoppingto finish, clothes to pick up at the cleaners ' , and ALL that homework to do as soon as I get home. Wouldn ' t you know it? The door was stuck! I pushed the door hard- er than before. Perhaps too hard, for it pro- pelled me around and around, until it finally came to a halt. I found myself standing in front of a room which looked strangely famil- iar but very much out of place. The faces, too, seemed familiar, although not exactly as I remembered them. A large banner was stretched across the room with these words: Welcome back, Class of ' 63! A young man approached me and I im- mediately recognized him as Tommy Patte- son, but much older than yesterday when I saw him at school. So glad you could come, Faye. W e were beginning to think you weren ' t. Won ' t it be wonderful to see the class of ' 63 together again after ten years? Suddenly everything fell into place. As impossible as it seemed, I had gone into the future ten years and was attending my class reunion at the cafeteria of Buckingham Cen- tral. Impossible? I thought so too, but there I was getting a sneak preview of the future lives of my classmates. As we entered the room to mingle with the group, Tommy explained that he was now DR. Patteson, founder of the Buckingham General Hospital. He had employed Judi Shuler as his receptionist and Peggy Connat- ser as his medical secretary. On the way, we were met by Frances Durham, head of Durham Secretarial College. Frances was still playing ball as frequently as her duties wouldpermit. She told us Nancy Ballowe and Macy Gormus held secretarial positions un- der members of President Caroline ' s Cabi- net. We turned towards a noisy group near the door to see what was going on. Who should enter but Noel Davidson. Noel had been ap- pointed U. S. Ambassador to Tahiti and other islands of the South Pacific. With her was that striking blonde, Lucy Johns. Lucy had established a most unique school in New Or- leans at which she taught rich young men to become irresistible flirts! Things quieted down and Lynda Baber en- tertained us with a lovely song. Lynda was teaching advanced Algebra at Central. Talk- ing about old school days, she told us that Linda Lawson, girl ' s basketball coach at the University of Dillwyn, was engaged to Troy Donahue! Patsy Harris was the dramatic coachat the University and was currently di- recting Tom Sawyer. All the group was disappointed that Karolyn Sue Seay had been unable to leave her EIGHT children to attend the reunion. Lynda also told us Carolyn Allen Taylor was Irving Driscoll ' s private secre- tary. Irving owned his own engineering con- cern, his latest project being that fabulous bridge connecting downtown Dillwyn with Route 60. Before the bridge could be com- pleted, E. B. and Velma Sprouse had to move their garage. They didn ' t object for they wanted to expand their business and build a new home. Moving through the room, I stopped to talk with Betty Crump and Becky Morgan. Betty owned the Elite Beauty Salon and em- ployed Dot Adcock as her receptionist. Betty told me her biggest competitor was Mary Lee, owner of Davidson ' s Salon right across the street. Is that a police uniform Frand Baird is wearing? I asked. Why, yes, answered Becky. He is Captain of the Dillwyn Metro- politan Squad and I ' m Dillwyn ' s first police- woman. And, Wilbur Crews is making an ex- cellent Sheriff for Buckingham County. He has gotten new glasses and ne never misses a thing! Gloria Steger was at the punchbowl, man- aging refreshments. Gloria, who taught the fourth grade at Buckingham Elementary, told me that Diane Steger was her principal. Diane seemed to have one big fault: she refused to punish children when they misbehaved, so Shirley Salmon Bolling received both a type- writer and a PADDLE when she became the school secretary. 90 As I moved away from Gloria, I saw a lovely girl surrounded by most of the men at the party. Who could it be but Kaye Webb? Kaye had been modeling for Dior recently and seemed to love it. Kaye said she saw Sharon Baber just before she left Paris. It seemed Sharon had been living on the Left Bank of the Seine and writing most successfully. She had written three best sellers and the sales were still going strong.” Barbara Waycaster, who had taken a year off from her teaching at Christian Elementary to relax and travel, was sharing an apartment with Sharon this year. There were a number of military uniforms at the reception, too; Colonel Steve Huskey of the U. S. Army and Navy Commander James Wade. There ' s just something about a uni- form that . . . well . . . The sports section was also well repre- sented. Ron Powers was playing for the Green Bay Packers in their most successful year. David Fulcher ' s pitching had earned him a fabulous salary as the N. Y. Yankees ' star pitcher. Larry LeSueur had quickly become one of the country ' s top sports announcers after Pee Wee Reese ' s retirement. I joined a chattering group near the win- dow. Joyce Reynolds told me Edna Ragland and she were interior decorators. Their next assignment was to redecorate the White House. Linda Boatwright and Sue Taylor were working for the Division of Motor Vehicles. They often visit Carolyn Seay Morris who was living in Richmond with her husband and two children. As we were talking, Buford Adcock joined our group. Buford, the State Highway Com- missioner, informed us that James Wooten was the resident engineer for Buckingham. Ellis Derrenbacker and Kenneth Harris owned controlling stock in a nationwide garage cor- poration. He also told us that James Hudgins had built a dragstrip on the outskirts of Farm- ville. James ' main attraction was Carole Murphy, Champion Lady Drag Racer of the World. Richard Bryant was their head me- chanic. Next, who should I see but Carole Reardon. Carole was Dale LeSueur ' s campaign mana- ger. Dale had been elected Mayor of the Great Metropolis of Dillwyn. Carole mentioned that Carrie Herndon was conducting screen tests for Paramount Motion Pictures- -the lucky thing! Roger Hill was president of General Motors; Lorine Moss, his public accountant; and Charlotte Boggs Ozmar, his chief typist. Acie Shumaker, while giving out free passes to his bowling alley in Washington, D. C., told me Jimmy Jones had recently been appointed Secretary of Agriculture- -I sup- pose the youngest ever! He seemed to be- lieve Janie Mitchell was very enthusiastic about her position as Jimmy ' s personal con- sultant and advisor. This job enabled her to accompany Jimmy on his inspection tours all over the U. S. Moving along, I stopped to talk with Loretta Taylor. Loretta was stenographer to the Mayor of Charlottesville. Allen Ritter was Commonwealth ' s Attorney. Marie Senger, an excellent secretary, was studying law in her spare time. She had been award- ed national recognition as Secretary of the Year. Knowing Marie, I ' m quite sure she de- served this honor. Goodness, the Class of ' 63 had been suc- cessful! No one could deny that. Suddenly everything became blurred be- fore my eyes. I closed them. The dizziness passed. When my eyes opened, I found to my surprise that I was standing once more inside the revolving door. Apparently I had bumped my head on the door and dreamed of the re- union of the Class of ' 63. Imagine that! I thought to myself. Wait until the class hears about this--they ' ll never believe it!
