Then in 1709 two others carved their names in Woodson ' s Cave also. By 1727 Buckingham was a part of Goochland, later it formed a part of Albemarle, and on April 17, 1761 the Virginia House of Burgesses established it as a separate county. It is surmised that this county might possibly have been named for Buckinghamshire in England. Quite possibly it could have been named for the Duke of Buckingham. The first courthouse of Buckingham was a wooden building standing west of the pre- sent village. This courthouse burned in 1869 and no records from within were saved. In 1831 a school for the advancement of girls was started in the County. It was named the Buckingham Female Collegiate Institute, it was chartered in 1837 under Methodist influence. Wartime pressures forced it to close its doors in 1863. This how- ever was a great start toward educational opportunities in Buckingham County. •j

FOREWORD This year marks the beginning of the Civil War Com- memoration, a subject much talked about in our school. In the ' 61 BUCCANEER we have tried not only to give you a clear picture of our school life, but to present a few of the places of historical interest and meaning in our county. We hope that through this examination of the past, we will come to know the Civil War Period better, common ideals will be strengthened, and mutual understanding deepened.
