It is the first year there has been practice every day. We have the largest band in the history of our school; and this year, money is being raised for new Band uniforms. The Band played at Lynchburg for the William and Mary - Y.M.I. football game and led the parade downtown. It has also played in Charlottesville and Cumberland parades. During the year it has played for concerts at Bucking- ham Central High School and Randolph Henry High School. In addition to these, it played for the Music Festival in the Spring. 49 Hoys’ Chorus First Row; left to right: Bobby Davis, Robert Spencer, James Wilkerson, Dallas Thomas, R a 1 p h Wootten, Roland Sams. Third Row: Gene La nil, Tommy Senger, Harry Huddleston, Acie Jamerson, Dennis Childress, L.P. Gilliam, Pete Mills, James Shumaker, Gene Steger-Pianist. This is an outstanding group of boys who have very fine voices. Another superlative of this Glee Club is its record as the largest boy ' s chorus group in the history of Buckingham Central. The special programs in which they have taken part are proof of their popularity andabilities. They have sung at Randalph-Henry, where they were liked a great deal; for Christmas and Easter Programs and at the Spring Music Festival. In addition to these, their talents were en- joyed at concerts. i 50 (girls’ Chorus Row 1, left to right: Dainy LeSeuer, Gloria Newton, Gladys Poe, Annie Wade, Bernice Stile s, June Ownby, Margie Newton, Louise Higgins, Nancy Dunkum, Audrey Dolan, Betty Jean Gowin, Eunice Fender. The Girls 1 Glee Club has participated in many programs. They sang at the Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving Programs and at the Spring Music Festival. They have also sung at concerts for our school and Randloph-Henry. Many people have enjoyed the good voices of this fine group of girls. They in turn have enjoyed singing Rodgers and Hammerstein songs. 51 ' Dance Hand First Row: Bill Yancey, Gene Steger, Roy Hill, Donald Boggs, Ruth Barnes, and Jane Pennington. Second Row: Jimmy Hill, Melvin Jones, Scott Davidson, Maxey Jones, Billy Lee, and Athel Ballowe. The members of the Dance Band are students who play well and are very much interested in this type of work, most of their practice is on their own time, either at night or before school. They have played for dances at school and at Curdsville and for the Spring Music Festival. 52 basketball SHORTY TO THE RESCUE The players all teased himbecause he was short. But still Shorty Jones was a wonderful sport. Their laughter and jeers he took all in fun. And for the dear team mates every game won! One nightat a game when the score had been tied, With seconds to play, Gosh! How the team tried! The viewers were excited; They hollowed and r oa r e d When the coach sent ol ' e Shorty on out on the floor. He snatchedthe ol ' d ballandraced down the court And he heard the crowd yelling, Gee! what a sport ! Then the ball he quickly raised to his chin; he threw it. Someone hit it, and it failed to go in! The players were hot, but they fought for the ball And the coach on the side sadly said, This is all. But Shorty came up to the rescue again. And won that ole ' game THE SCORE EIGHT TO TEN !!!!!!! 53 basketball Schedule Dec. 7 Crew Away Boys and Girls Dec. 11 Randolph Henry Away Boys and Girls Dec. 14 Blackstone Away Boys and Girls Dec. 18 Appomattox Home Boys and Girls Jan. 2 Kenbridge Home Boys and Girls Jan. 4 Bluestone Home Boys and Girls Jan. 8 Appomattox Away Boys and Girls Jan. 11 Amelia Away Boys and Girls Mary V. The purpose of the paper is to provide a way for all the students to express their views and opinions and to present the news of the entire school. The lay out has been changed this year. There are two columns instead of the usual three. This helps the looks of the paper a great deal. The Centralizer is published once a month through the combined efforts of the students and various departments in the school -- English, Art, and Commercial. This year the editor is a senior and her assistant is a junior; the business manager is a senior and her assistant is a junior. The sports editors were selected from those seniors playing on one of the teams. The articles are written by students, proofread by the English teachers and editors, and sent to the typist; then they are mimographed and sent to be sold. 71 Gene Steger Editor Evelyn Stout Assistant Editor Billy Lee Business Manager Mary Lee Assistant Business Manager buccaneer Staff Gene Steger Editor Evelyn Stout Assistant Editor - Poet Tommy Yancey Assistant in Layout Billy Lee Business Manager Mary Lee Assistant Business Manager Pauline Harris Advertising Manager Revia Tipton Circulation Manager Frances Ayres, Jeannette Newton . . .
