As we Freshmen approached Central High in September, 1944, we peered cautiously around, for everything was new and strange. If we had seen anything familiar wc would probably have fainted. There were many unfamiliar faces, but several of the strangers smiled cordially. Some of us had difficulty in finding our classes at first. We would burst into senior home rooms or classes, at which the upper classmen would roar, to our dis- comfiture. Nevertheless, we soon began to feel more comfortable. We were welcomed warmly by our freshmen teachers, Mrs. Bransford, Miss Charlton, Mr. Sadler, and Miss Forbes. By joining clubs such as the 4-H and Hi-Y clubs and attending parties sponsored by them we made new friends and really had fun. Although we enjoyed our freshman days, we were glad to return the following year as Sophomores. By this time we had gained more confidence, which was displayed by our presentation of several assembly programs. A great improvement, the movie projector, was added to our school during the year. We were delighted with it. Most of us took biology when We were sophomores and some were unlucky enough to have this class before lunch. We found out what made many insects and animals tick , but somehow failed to get around to chloroforming the mice that ravaged our lockers. There were many clubs which we could join this year. There were the junior Science Club, Future Homemakers, F.F.A., and Forest Fire Fighters. To be eligible for the Beta Club we had to make at least a B average, character, achievement and leadership. Eight of us were initiated. There were a few brave students who tried for the basketball teams and have made outstanding players. Cn returning to school in September of '46 we were almost surprised to find ourselves Juniors. After all weren't juniors about as important as Seniors? We thought so any way funtil we failed to receive our diplomasj. Most of us enjoyed the year tremendously, but some of us enjoyed it too much and made dangerously low grades. However, most of us survived. The greatest event of the season, as usual, was the junior-Senior Prom. We had almost as much fun planning and preparing for it as we did at the big affair. We decided to have it informal, much to the dismay of many Seniors who wanted the usual formal. Half of the gym was for dancing and half for games. In this way everyone could participate. Another momentous event was held at B.C.H.S. during the year. This was the Carnival. One of the most amusing contests was that of neck measuring. The person having the smallest neck received a prize. This was awarded to Irving Driscoll, jr. Later several skits were presented and the Carnival closed with two girls doing a Hula dance. There were several parties sponsored by various clubs and a hay ride sponsored by the Hi-Y. A Beta Convention was held in April in Richmond. just before exams the Seniors made a trip to Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown. A few of the Juniors were lucky enough to be included. This tour of these historical places is long to be remembered. At commencement quite a few girls were ushers, which made this seem more important than previous graduations. Our time was drawing near and .... On September 12, We entered Central High School as Seniors. Our cup was literally running over and there were so many things to be crowded into this, our last year. One of our first activities was to present a play for Book Week in which we enacted parts of books and characters from books. Some of us attended a I-Ii-Y Convention held in Lynchburg. The Commercial Club toured Charlottesville one day and everyone seemed to have a splendid time. Ordering our rings was one of the most exciting occasions this year. We have also measured for our caps and gowns and received our calling cards. Plans have not been made for our Senior trip and we don't know what the juniors are planning for our Junior-Senior Prom, but we are sure it is going to be swell. We have so much to look forward to! Even though our dreams are about to come true, dear readers, we regret to leave Central. In leaving, we wish to say that we think our teachers have been the bex! and we wish to thank them for their splendid instruction. In the forth- coming days we shall look back at the glorious days spent at B.C.H.S. and treasure these happy memories. Venimus, Vidimus, Vicimus ! Signed and Sealed by The Dignified Seniors Hereunto have we set our hands and seals this day in the year of Our Lord, One Thousand Nine Hundred and Forty-Eight. Man WooTeN EVELYN Mmzit PHUPHEIIY We Seniors have a hard time! The teachers think that we can learn everything in a few, short lessons. My work had piled up until I felt that I would never get through and here was an article five pages long that I must read before I could go to sleep. The article read Ten years from now we will be living in a different world. The sun was shining, the birds were singing and I found myself walking along a beautiful road. Before me was a white cottage. It was all shining and new. In the doorway stood Sarah and Juan. I stopped, Why I didn't know this house was here. Sarah giggled, NVe just finished it on June 6, l9S8. Wayne Talbott and Evelyn Meek stepped out on the porch. Come in Rita, Wayne yelled, we're looking at a telecast of my latest Broadway Hit, 'Central's Magic Circle.' Allene Springer is directing the music and the hit of the show is the dancing team, Toney and McFadden. The press says they're better than Astaire and Rogers ever were. Suddenly the house was no longer there. A red convertible drew up beside mc. The driver hailed me, Want a tide, Rita? It was the voice of Earl Davis. Beside him sat Shirley Moss smoking a long Rum River Crook. In the back seat sat Thurman Hill, Mitchell Christian and Bruce Rush. They were on their way to New York to see jimmy Scott pitch his first game in the World Series. Can't go with you today, I said, They drove away in a cloud of dust. Along the way I noticed a large brick schoolhouse. There was a group of girls playing basketball under the supervision of Miss Myra Bracey. As Myra was pointing out to me the various buildings on the campus, I noticed Rice Seay and Herbert Maxey standing on the doorstep of the Agricultural building. Myra offered to take me over the school plant. When we were near the end of a long hall, a man stepped out of the principal's office. He was baldheaded. Isn't that Billy Ayres? I asked. Certainly, replied Myra, didn't you know he was our principal? just then two teachers came down the hall. It was Mary Elizabeth Beasley and Flora Ballowc. This is really a pleasure, I said, but I have to catch a bus. Three buses were waiting at the station when I walked in. Dave Word sat at the wheel of the nearest one. Talking to him was a very much dressed-up couple. When they turned, I recognized one of our B.C.H.S. bus drivers and Mary Ann Davidson. Mary Ann nodded her head and grains of rice fell from her hat. A voice behind me spoke. I turned to face Eugene O Brien dressed in khaki and Cleveland Morris in navy blue. So Uncle Sam got you, I said. W'e've just been home to attend the wedding of Floyd N. Word and his high school sweetheart. Yeah, said Eugene, it was some wedding, and you ought to have been there. I'm sorry I missed the wedding, I said. How have you boys been getting along? I like the Navy, was Cleveland's reply, and guess who I saw in Norfolk last week? Ernest Palmore and Lenarius Maxey, pilots for United Airlines. I saw Sadie Banton down at McGuire Hospital last week, chimed in Eugene. She makes a good head nurse, and in the office were Marie Moss and Helen Ragland typing away for dear life. just then the horn blew and I climbed aboard. Tickets, please. It was Raymond Agee working for the Greyhound bus line! I took my seat beside an elaborately dressed young lady. It was Helen Chandler on her way to her native Tennessee. The bus dropped me at my destination, and I called for a taxi to take me to the airport. As I got into the taxi a man rushed up, jumped into the taxi, threw down his brief case and said, Driver, you'll have to hurry if you expect me to catch that plane! I recognized the eminent scientist, Sammy joseph. He wore a small, black mustache and he seemed preoccupied. I must catch that plane, he muttered, if I'm to appear before Congress tomorrow. just then I glanced at the taxi driver's picture and recognized Willie Bryant. I-Ie was really stepping on the gas. We rushed into the airport for tickets. The girl behind the counter was Janie Reynolds and the hostess for the plane was Audrey jamerson. She really looked cute in that hostess uniform. The big plane landed and taxied to a stop. The pilot, john Ranson, came down the steps to speak to one of the guards. As I got on the plane I glanced back at the guard and recognized James Baird. We didn't have time to talk but he seemed to know me. Seeing a seat near the front of the plane, I sat down by a very sophisticated gentleman. He was nervously eyeing the ground as our plane soared into the blue. After he stopped looking below, I got a look at his face. In spite of his high forehead, I recognized my old pal Hugh Garnett. He still had his curls, As Hugh and I reminiseed about our old classmates, I inquired about XVillard Patteson, our president back in old '48, I've seen quite a bit of Willard, but he's busy just like me, replied Hugh. He is manager of the art department for Esquire magazine. I wasn't surprised because I remembered he was quite artistic when I sat behind him in history class. Rita, have you heard about my big business? Hugh asked, removing a small calendar from his brief case. Writteii in big letters was Garnett,s Runless Hose. He gave me a pair to prove this statement. After a very bumpy landing, I stepped from the plane and clumsily dropped my purse. A polite man picked it up for me. It was Pete Harris. He was on his way to see his future wife. It seemed that many of our school-mates were working in the same town in which Pete's factory was located. Mae Wooten had a large beauty shop which specialized in hair dyeing. Her assistants were Doris Shores, Hazel Rush and Dorothy Huddleston. As we chatted, we happened to hear the announcer remind us of the daily broadcast of Mary Thomas and her Central Songstersf' Pete told me that Virginia Banton and her husband were also members of this famous hillbilly band. Pete faded away. Strolling along, I noticed the rolling fields of grain. Suddenly a voice came from fContinucdj o a corn field. I would never have recognized George Taylor with that huge straw hat on, but his voice seemed quite l'amiliar. How do you think I'm doing, Rita? Oh, George, this is the best farm I've seen around here. l'll bet you haven't seen Ralph Tapscott's big dairy farm over on the next hill. That's tops! XVho owns that charming little brick home on the left above your house? I questioned. Oh, Mildred Moss owns a big apartment house up there. Kitty Lann and Mattie Ayres board there in order to be near their bakery shop, and just guess who our milltman is-Eugene Davis! We have a slight disagreement almost every morning-that is when I have either too much or not enough milk.', l stopped by a very attractive restaurant for a cold drink. I was deeply interested in a newspaper when l felt someone pat me on the shoulder. I looked up and there stood Clarissa Maxey, but she wasn't Miss Maxey anymore. Beside her stood her husband. Clarissa had on a lovely hat. She had just bought it she said in Ralph Tapscott's new department store, and Clethers Gregory was a model there and just LIN SXVCCI IIS UVUF. The world before me again became blurred and there I was walking down my road once more. I could see faintly before me a stranger approaching. As he came nearer and nearer, his face became more and more familiar, and l knew at once it was the man of my dreams. l was suddenly aroused from my sleep by a loud voice. Rita, are you going to study all night? l realized then that I had been dreaming for hours, and like all dreams this one had no ending.
