Driscoll Principal, Buckingham Central H. S. BUCKINGHAM CiuNTRAL HIGH SCHOOL In the summer of 1939 this building was completed. In September of that year the high school pupils from three schools, Buckingham, Curdsville, and Dillwyn, came together in this building. Since then the consolidation has gone on; new friendships have been made and old antagonisms forgotten; life here has been full and rich in many ways; we have learned much and enjoyed many pleasures together. No longer do we think so much of the community from which we come, but we all glory in the fact that Buckingham Central is our school home? ? } ¢ 4 1a | . 7 { 3 x Lite —7 Fact os fo oTe k a rad YS LS Ss vs | From Martha Washington College comes Vivacious Mrs. Fontaine. Lots of energy, coupled with knowledge that comes from securing a B. S. degree, puts a hum of activity into the commercial department. Speed, accuracy, and efficiency are key ideals, and each pupil knows that a terrible scolding awaits him if he fails to attain this ideal. A stentorian voice rumbles through the halls- All pupils report to Assembly . Locker doors click shut and scurrying feet hurry towards the auditorium. Mr. Driscoll has spoken. We wonder if something brewed in his chemistry class is responsible for a voice of such carrying power. W. and M. and the University of Va. had a hand in shaping this efficient leader and educator, and granted him B. S. and M. S. degrees. How I dread that Senior English! Miss Sadler surely makes you work . ‘We wonder if Madison College and the University of Va. do that to you before they will give you a B. A. and a M. A. degree, or is it the result of the “Thirty Years ) War ? Both maybe. In addition to “lending a hand to the many requests for help by both teachers and pupils, Mr. Rainey instructs his classes in math., science, French and geography. lon provided him with foundation work, practical experience has added to his store of knowledge, and further work at University of Va. is about to be rewarded with aM. A. degree. Surely Mary-Baldwin, on a memorable day in June 1939, did not know that this graduate would soon be taking such a wholesome and sincere interest in the pupils of B.C. H. S. It perhaps did know that Miss Lapsley, by giving her best, would inspire her pupils to do their best, whether on the basketball court or in the mathematics or inglish classes. Karly in life Mitty Moore got well up in the world. From that vantage point he views the surroundingss with an impartial eye, but he frequently forgets the lowly things of life. His life at V. P. I. won him aM. S. degree. Somewhere along the line’ he developed a character that elicits the respect and love of all. He puts his whole soul into serving his agricultural boys. Miss Hall believes that statement that one who makes the most noise has little else to offer. No noisy display advertises the many fine activities taking place in her English and history classes. Her pupils delight in her quiet ways, and Flora Macdonald too knew what it was doing when it gave her a B. A. dezree. Quiet and unassuming, Mr. Sadler teaches his general science and math classes with a firm yet pleasant manner. He has a keen sense of humor, a genuine concern for the welfare of the boys and Biris, and an alert interest in the affairs of the world. We wonder if that B. A. from the University of Va. gave him that enthusiasm for photography! storms may rurrle the quiet waters of school life, but Mrs, Rainey sails calmly on. At lon, besides winning her degree, she became aS good a fisherman as Mr. tainey- she caught the fish she wanted. Eer pupils in history prepare that lesson, for they know that at the end she will deal out marks with a positive hand. As the pupils see the twinkle in his eye, they listen atten- tively for the subtle fun Mr. Spencer is sure to poke at their faulty answers to his questions in biology and math. ‘when Hampden- Sidney awarded him his B. S., it also graduated one of its best athletes. Coaching is his real love and he does honor to it in his stern demand that all who participate play the game hard and fairly. Friday afternoon. The last bell rings and the secretary rushes to the library waving an announcement from the office, but Mrs. Nuckols is already getting into her car, hastening to her Richmond apartment and to her Woodrow , A glance around tells you that all . is in order and that wWiiliam and Mary did a fine job when it sent UMieseonesa™ Torth with a B.-A. to rule over a “library. . Eldon C. Grover is Pennsylvania's veritable son gbird, the envy of the boys and the delight of the girls. His pupils in English, history, and music positively will not pronounce their Syllables, and Ohio State University will not tolerate slurred Syllables. His knowledge of music proves that he has a B. We also enjoyed the good humor and fun of Mr. Kendrick Garrett and Mr. Lacy Rush, farmers in Buckingham County and of Mr. John Emert, pastor of the Dillwyn Baptist Church, Dillwyn, Virginia. Later in the evening Miss Virginia Elcan, and Miss Mary Apperson, now home economic teachers in the State of Ohio, Miss Ruby Crews, and Miss Geraldine Flood, secretaries in the same state, sang a quartet, our old school song, Here's to Dear Old Central . During the evening the class was largely entertained by moving from table to table and discussing their good old school days and raising a general racket as they had always done when together. Couples danced to the strains of Billy Spencer's orchestra with William Snoddy playing the saxaphone; Calvin Blackwell, at the piano; Hay Baber, playing a guitar; Rufus Oliver, playing bass fiddle; and Junius Oliver playing the trombone. And in a RUSH the water was down; Along the road some MOSS we found; The people wondered what the PRICE would be, To repair the damage that they could SHAY. Home again! Home again! As Lillian Russell, or some vamp of the stage, We think Doris Word will be quite the rage. And now comes Hugh, our musical boy, Vho plays the guitar as if it were a toy. Martha Hllen Jones, our biggest humdinger, She may be small, but boy, what a singer! Now there's Gillispie, the team's greatest sport, OC watch him! 0 watch him, he's rounding the court. And there's Lucy Bowling, who's heading the crowd; Just hear them, O hear them all cheering so loud! Now look! There's Bailey, our noon entertainer, Who acts like a clown or an animal trainer. And here is Foster, our actor, our star. His fame in dramatics is traveling far. And now Nick Snoddy, our famous musician, Whose music so charms us, he seems a magician. And do we have beauties? For instance, we'll say, There's Ella or Ruby for queen of the May. Now time won't permit me to mention us all, But if you would meet us, drop in for a call. You'll find us fine fellows; sparkling like dew, The JUNIORS! The JUNIORS! The class of ‘42! -Marietta Baird and Nick Snoddy 28 E eanane!
