GX VARSITY BASKETBALL b Decker, Luskin, Vershhow, Krentzman, Reiman, Gregory, liurstein, J.. Nr. McKiegue. BASKETBALL No one paid much attention to the 1972 version of Var- sity Basketball at Browne 84 Nichols at the beginning of the season. The school figured the hest we could do was to finish dead last. Even the players were a bit skeptical. But a new coach came onto the scene, Kevin McKiegue, lead by vigor and a few unorthodox training methods Qin- cluding musicj, the team hegan to feel themselves out, gain- ing confidence, learning each others moves. Co-captains Jim Burstein and Mark Krentzman were hilled to he the only lights in a dismal season until the word was circulated that three new stars had emerged under the hoop. Nick Gregory and Curt Reiman, both juniors, played steadily throughout the season and Peter Von Mehren added the key clutch hasket when called upon. 82 We had had a good league season, 7-2, yet it all boiled down to one game at St. Paul's. Win it and we had a chance for a post-season invitation to a tournament, lose it and it was time to take out the ole mitt and bat, But win it we did! Mark Krentzman's hoop with twenty seconds left tied it up in regulation time. jim Burstein sparked us to victory in overtime. On to the tournament we went, playing a strong St. Mark's team who pulled out a squeaker against us earlier in the sea-4 son. We played at Belmont Hill and the crowd was definite- ly with us. We played a good game only to lose, going down reluctantly. For a team that was supposed to finish last, we surprised a lot of people.
