WRESTLING The beginning of the 1972 wrestling season was marked by hard work and frustration. We lost several close meets and just didn't seem to be able to use the potential we knew we had to its fullest extent. But our problems didn't last. The breaks began falling our way and we pulled everything together for the end of the season. Our placing third in the Graves-Kelsey Tournament was the result of everyone working together and doing the best they could. Co-Captain Steve DeMaio and Steve Banks came in first in the 160 lbs. and 110 lbs. weight classes. This is the third consecutive year that Steve DeMaio has won his weight class, and being a three time Graves, Kelsey gold medalist places Steve near the top of the list of great wrestlers, both past and present, from the schools with whom we compete. jim Scanlan pinned the number two seed in the 121 lbs. weight class to take second place, and at 158 lbs., Bill Coukos moved from his fifth seed to place second after knocking off both the fourth and first seeds, the latter with a pin. Co-Captain 'led Diehl and Captain-elect Clark Patter- son took third places at 152 lbs. and 177 lbs. jeff Worm Hennessy and Dave Frosty DiBenedetto, both seeded sixth, put on back to back exhibitions of sheer determina- tion to win at 127 lbs. and 133 lbs. Both jeff and D. B. beat the third seeds in their weight classes as they worked for their fourth place wins. Most of the glory in wrestling goes to the consistent wins, but there are other members of the team who deserve Rifti praise. Without the guidance and help of Mr. Dowse, Steve Lynch, Tom Blake, Mr. Duggan, and Compy Chase and the push supplied by those who faithfully came to practice, never knowing when or if they would get to wrestle on the varsity, the team wouldn't have been able to do as well as it did. What they did for the team is not unnoticed, but is appreciated by everyone. This year the wrestling team lost its fear of long road trips, and sent Steve DeMaio, Bill Coukos, and Steve Mosca to the New England Asociation of Independent Schools Wrestling Tournament at Trinity College in Hart- ford, Connecticut. Not ony did Steve DeMaio win his weight class in the Tournament, but he beat his opponent in the finals by the unbelievable score of 17-1, finishing Jil in New England at 160 lbs. for 1972.
