The Class of '72 of Browne 8: Nichols is the first class I have watched move through the Upper School. I first knew you when you were asking many ques- tions of me and of the School. It have been struck since our first encounters by the generosity of spirit that has characterized your basic mode of operation. Even when we have disagreed I have appreciated your willingness to solve our problems and to bridge information gaps rather than to resort to endless and unproductive arguments which might split us apart rather than to bring us together. With this spirit in mind I note with profound appreciation the fact you dedi- cate your 1972 Torch to the oceans. That dedication reinforces my feeling about the Class of '72 and gives me some real assurance about the future. As I con- sider the problems we will face in the days ahead in preserving our natural environment and preserving the best of our traditions and our institutions I am optimistic and pleased to know that many of you with your basic generosity of spirit will be attacking those ideas and forces that would not preserve what we have. Your concern for the oceans around us seems to me to be a reassertion of your role in history. In the ,60's many lost that sense of place in history. Man's rela- tionship to his natural world must be viewed in an historical perspective and now is the time to alter the course of that relationship. For much of the past couple of centuries man's history and actions might be characterized as a battle with nature and one in which the forces of nature were to be harnessed. One can understand that tradition but at its limits it has led to policies and attitudes that are destructive to a meaningful future. A dead ocean can only be related to in a form of lifelessness. R The dedication of the Torch to life in the oceans encourages me in the belief that you recognize that your role in this world extends beyond yourselves and the parochial interests that most of us spend our time confronting. A global view of man's responsibilities is a wonderful thought and if we have shared in the development of that vision I am deeply grateful. I am proud to have known you and I know the world will be a better place as a result of your concern and by your very presence as active participants in its affairs. PETER K. GUNNESS H eat! mailer
