N ot enough individuality retards progressf, The individuality which is portrayed by this year's graduation class is truly unique. Their variety, their different ideas, and thoughts, reflect their potential for the future. For it is in the controlled development of their individual characteristics, and in the adaptation of these character- istics to the good of the society that the class of 1972 will make its great- est conribution to the world. It is our hope that we will always keep this goal before us, and will continue to strive for it. DAVID STOCKWOOD S 019001 President To the oceon: Man marks the earth with ruin . . -LORD BYRON Are we perhaps fated to mark the ocean with ruin, to plunder, pollute and contend until we have a ghost ocean bereft of all but of its waves? -WESLEY MARX The Class of '72 of Browne 8: Nichols is the first class I have watched move through the Upper School. I first knew you when you were asking many ques- tions of me and of the School. It have been struck since our first encounters by the generosity of spirit that has characterized your basic mode of operation. Even when we have disagreed I have appreciated your willingness to solve our problems and to bridge information gaps rather than to resort to endless and unproductive arguments which might split us apart rather than to bring us together. With this spirit in mind I note with profound appreciation the fact you dedi- cate your 1972 Torch to the oceans. That dedication reinforces my feeling about the Class of '72 and gives me some real assurance about the future. As I con- sider the problems we will face in the days ahead in preserving our natural environment and preserving the best of our traditions and our institutions I am optimistic and pleased to know that many of you with your basic generosity of spirit will be attacking those ideas and forces that would not preserve what we have. Your concern for the oceans around us seems to me to be a reassertion of your role in history. In the ,60's many lost that sense of place in history. Man's rela- tionship to his natural world must be viewed in an historical perspective and now is the time to alter the course of that relationship. For much of the past couple of centuries man's history and actions might be characterized as a battle with nature and one in which the forces of nature were to be harnessed. One can understand that tradition but at its limits it has led to policies and attitudes that are destructive to a meaningful future. A dead ocean can only be related to in a form of lifelessness. R The dedication of the Torch to life in the oceans encourages me in the belief that you recognize that your role in this world extends beyond yourselves and the parochial interests that most of us spend our time confronting. A global view of man's responsibilities is a wonderful thought and if we have shared in the development of that vision I am deeply grateful. I am proud to have known you and I know the world will be a better place as a result of your concern and by your very presence as active participants in its affairs. PETER K. Howe l don't know how many of you are familiar with the kind of school that I went to three years ago, but let me tell you about it. A typical day went something like this. School began promptly at 8:15 a.m., at which time there was a morning assembly. During this assembly no one was allowed to talk at all, those who did usually got a disorderly. At this assembly there was usually a hymn followed by the school prayer. Once the assembly was over we all filed out quietly and went to classes. The school day was broken into ten periods each forty - five minutes long, with two bells after each period, one at the end of the period and one three minutes later at the beginning of the next one. When we were not in class we were supposed to be in study hall. If we did not have a good reason as to why we were not in study hall when we should have been, we were given a disorderly. Needless to say there was no talking in study hall and we could only leave study hall if we had a note from our teacher. Seniors, the only people who did not have to be in study hall, usually hung out around a place called the senior room, which was located under the headmaster's office. The senior room contained a billiard table, a record player, a radio, a poster of Raquel Welch, and also members of the senior class. When either the volume of the record player got too loud or a prospective applicant to that school got grazed by a stray billiard ball, the senior room was closed down for aweek. Jackets and ties were mandatory and there were strict rules governing hair length. All rules governing clothing and hair were formulated by a faculty committee called The Dressand Appearance Committee lDAC for shortl. The same English courses were given year after year. We studied exactly what the grade before us did. Every week we had to memorize ten English vocabulary words, and during the summers we were responsible for memorizing three hundred words. Knowledge is the only fountain both of the love and the principles of human liberty. A sense of duty pursues us ever. It is omnipresent, like the Diety. At the start of the season the 1971 version of the Varsity Football team generated its own winning spirit even before a game was played. After a 1970 season which pro- duced many letter winners and few victories, the only direction the team could go was up. Under new assistant coaches and Mr. Etter they did just that. Through the first four games the offense could only muster two touchdowns, those coming in the St. Paul's game. Then over the final three games the team jelled. It became a team, the team that everyone knew they could be. The varsity pulled out a 34-22 victory over arch-rival Belmont Hill. Then it beat Brooks 20-6 and recorded a 12-8 upset over a strong Roxbury Latin team. Special recognition should go to captain Bill Rappeleye, Dave Murphy and jay Connor who received honorable mention for their play. jamie Cook should be singled out for being voted to the All-League first team. it X ,V SQ si I 1 Ev!! In only four of the thirteen games played did the varsity score two or more goals. Every game was close though, three league games went into overtime and two others were lost by a single tally. The spirit of the team was outstanding. Each game was played with the excitement of the first game of the season. The soccer talent was there: each player knew how to handle a hall especially captain Ed Stone. The solid play of Herb Colby, Peter Gergeley and Peter Gardner will be missed next fall. Bruce Billings, a rookie in the nets, played excel- lent goal all season. The team was a good one, they lost to a perenially strong St. Marks team by a goal and beat Governor Dummer. The varsity swamped Lexington Christian 5-l and shutout Roxbury Latin, All in all the season was productive meeting up with strong competition from every opponent and handling it well. The Varsity Cross Country team came a long way this year. From a record of three wins, four losses last year, the team came up with a seven wins one loss record this year. This was the only winning varsity team in the fall season, and is the best varsity record since Varsity Basketball's 11-1 record about five years ago. The team worked as a unit. Bill Durette, a newcomer to B8cN, came in first in every league race, and broke four track records at various schools. Some by almost a minute. The team will only lose three of its members in graduation. Bill Durette, Wendell Colson, and Captain Charles Horton. The team has the potential of having another great season. jim Scanlon, a close second to Durette in many meets will lead the team as captain next year. I think that if the team continues to show the aggressiveness and desire to do well, then it is defnite, that they will have another good season next year, and in the seasons to come. -3 448 WWW . WRESTLING The beginning of the 1972 wrestling season was marked by hard work and frustration. We lost several close meets and just didn't seem to be able to use the potential we knew we had to its fullest extent. But our problems didn't last. The breaks began falling our way and we pulled everything together for the end of the season. Our placing third in the Graves-Kelsey Tournament was the result of everyone working together and doing the best they could. Co-Captain Steve DeMaio and Steve Banks came in first in the 160 lbs. and 110 lbs. weight classes. This is the third consecutive year that Steve DeMaio has won his weight class, and being a three time Graves, Kelsey gold medalist places Steve near the top of the list of great wrestlers, both past and present, from the schools with whom we compete. jim Scanlan pinned the number two seed in the 121 lbs. weight class to take second place, and at 158 lbs., Bill Coukos moved from his fifth seed to place second after knocking off both the fourth and first seeds, the latter with a pin. Co-Captain 'led Diehl and Captain-elect Clark Patter- son took third places at 152 lbs. and 177 lbs. jeff Worm Hennessy and Dave Frosty DiBenedetto, both seeded sixth, put on back to back exhibitions of sheer determina- tion to win at 127 lbs. and 133 lbs. Both jeff and D. B. beat the third seeds in their weight classes as they worked for their fourth place wins. Most of the glory in wrestling goes to the consistent wins, but there are other members of the team who deserve Rifti praise. Without the guidance and help of Mr. Dowse, Steve Lynch, Tom Blake, Mr. Duggan, and Compy Chase and the push supplied by those who faithfully came to practice, never knowing when or if they would get to wrestle on the varsity, the team wouldn't have been able to do as well as it did. What they did for the team is not unnoticed, but is appreciated by everyone. This year the wrestling team lost its fear of long road trips, and sent Steve DeMaio, Bill Coukos, and Steve Mosca to the New England Asociation of Independent Schools Wrestling Tournament at Trinity College in Hart- ford, Connecticut. Not ony did Steve DeMaio win his weight class in the Tournament, but he beat his opponent in the finals by the unbelievable score of 17-1, finishing Jil in New England at 160 lbs. for 1972. BASKETBALL No one paid much attention to the 1972 version of Var- sity Basketball at Browne 84 Nichols at the beginning of the season. The school figured the hest we could do was to finish dead last. Even the players were a bit skeptical. But a new coach came onto the scene, Kevin McKiegue, lead by vigor and a few unorthodox training methods Qin- cluding musicj, the team hegan to feel themselves out, gain- ing confidence, learning each others moves. Co-captains Jim Burstein and Mark Krentzman were hilled to he the only lights in a dismal season until the word was circulated that three new stars had emerged under the hoop. Nick Gregory and Curt Reiman, both juniors, played steadily throughout the season and Peter Von Mehren added the key clutch hasket when called upon. 82 We had had a good league season, 7-2, yet it all boiled down to one game at St. Paul's. Win it and we had a chance for a post-season invitation to a tournament, lose it and it was time to take out the ole mitt and bat, But win it we did! Mark Krentzman's hoop with twenty seconds left tied it up in regulation time. jim Burstein sparked us to victory in overtime. On to the tournament we went, playing a strong St. Mark's team who pulled out a squeaker against us earlier in the sea-4 son. We played at Belmont Hill and the crowd was definite- ly with us. We played a good game only to lose, going down reluctantly. For a team that was supposed to finish last, we surprised a lot of people. fx, - 5 xx ' Mn. EEP was originally instituted to enable students who go to school in the inner city to experience an academic sphere which would be totally foreign to them and to help to realize and stimulate new ideas about what a different school can be like. B8cN and Cathedral School kids are working together in programs in tutoring, woods- manship, computer, photography, shop, science labs, and sports. EEP is really not a one way thing, but rather a sharing experience by both B8cN and Cathedral people each trying to understand two different experiences, one no more or less valid than the other. lt is hoped that EEP will soon be able to take an even greater responsibility in extending itself into and strengthening the community of which B8cN is very much a part of. . 13 , ' I v tv i 4 TI lil. 3 1.
