Front Row: left to right, Capt. Van de Graaff, Narcus, Adams, Mason. Back Row: left to right, Coach Thomas, Banks, Holden, Gruenberg, Goldman. E IS Cupz. Van de Graaff and Couch Thomur. Maron serves. Last year's tennis team had the not too impressive record of six wins and eight losses. This is a good example of how deceptive won-lost records can beg in this case, we were faced with the toughest tennis schedule the school had ever had, and although the team was good, we constantly ran into better ones during the season. Of the matches we did win, two were especially satisfying, Winchester, whom BHN had never beaten in tennis, and Tufts, where Oliver Banks beat our captain of the year before, Al Savran, in the decisive match. Prospects for this year are extremely good, for we have every one of last year's top five men returning, and all of them are very much improved. We have practically the same tough schedule as last year, so the won-lost record again may not be too impressive, but it is almost bound to he better than last year's. We have a new coach this year in Mr. Thomas. Under him we are certain to be the best conditioned team in recent years, for he has us undergoing the unique Cfor BS:N tennis teams, anyway, experience of running bridges. Since he is a tennis pro during the summer, Mr. Thomas is also very well qualified to give us instruction. The ranking of the top Hve through most of last year was as follows: Oliver Banks, Iohn Van de Graaff, Ionny Narcus, Bill Adams, and Art Mason, in that order. These five have all returned, as I said before, and they will probably play the top five spots again, but the order will probably be quite different.

Gosh it'.r small. 1 9 Olson, Iackson, and Coxswain Bazely. As for the second and third boats, it is hard to say what will happen. Sturm, Smith, Mazzanovich and Edwards, make up one boat, while Lombard, Butler, Blatchford and Captain Woodward make up another. Below the Varsity, two new rowing clubs have been formed. This year there are enough boys to make up two crews in each club. It is hoped, however, that eventually each club will have three racing crews. This means that with a race every Wednesday, be- tween the two clubs, everyone will have a chance to race and gain experience. The winning club first crew will race as the fourth boat and be presented with a cup at the season's end. The Middle School has two racing fours and two eights which represent two clubs. It is amazing to see eight coxswain size oarsmen propelling a shell, yet it is also comforting to realize that what will probably be future Varsity material is getting such a good start. There have been tremendous steps taken to improve crew at Browne and Nichols. A new shell this year means that we now have eight fours and two eights, all in good shape and something to be proud of. The present boat house is inadequate both in size and condition, but in a few years we hope to have a new one. Everything in the past should be looked on with pride, and one should realize that as the Browne and Nichols' Crew program continues to grow, a tradition is being built. P-u-u-1-I-I 1' Okay, gent:

Adams' r'n'c'1'1fr,f. Ollie flanks will very likely play number one again. Ile has more experience than anyone else on the team, but he is very erratic. lust how often his game is on this year will have a lot to do with the success of the team. The situation in the next three positions is very indefinite. Bill Adams and Captain Iohn Van de Graaff were fairly well set in the second and third spots respectivelyg then jonny Narcus switched back from crew and since then has beaten every one in the top five except Van de Graaff, whom he hasn't played. Thus it is conceivable that Narcus could end up even playing number one. ln positions five and six the picture becomes relative- ly clear. Art Mason and last year's manager, Bud Gruenberg, are pretty well set there. One quality that this team has in abundance is depth. The bottom two men are capable of giving anyone in the top four a real run for his money. This should pay off particularly in the matches where we play six singles. The tentative doubles setups are as follows, a week before the first match: Adams-Van de Graaff, Banks- Mason, and Narcus-Gruenberg, in that order. We have stressed doubles a good deal this spring. so it should definitely be one of our strong points. There are three essentials for success in any sport: good material, good coaching, and good spirit. This team possesses all three in abundanceg therefore we look with confidence for a successful and rewarding season. N arcnr at net. Hun ks arm' 'cm
